How early to get to the ship to board

I am trying to understand (and I am a veteran) why they should be allowed special boarding priviledges. (sp) For the most part veterans don't even get a discount on DCL (a pet peeve of mine but it doesn't stop me from sailing them). That said after spending 13 years and 7 months in the Air Force I am happy if I get something special but don't ever expect it, nor should anyone else. And yes I didn't retire but in 1992 over 200K were forced out of the military due to drawdowns. I wasn't given a choice to stay in.

We are always there when they first open up. We have also sailed out of several different ports, including international starts. We have enjoyed checking in, meeting the characters, and reviewing the navigators while we wait to board. We have never encountered overcrowding and everyone is in a happy spirit. When we get on board, we have lunch and enjoy the ship. We feel like we have been on vacation for several hours, enjoying our time, when we will pass by the lobby and see people still boarding.
