How Early is Too Early to Plan??? - TR Link Added - 12/29

I forgot you were a day after me... Happy belated!
Same to you, sir.

Welcome To winter!
It got here fast this year.

Awwwww.....

That moves pretty quick. How often do you have to stop to empty it out?
Well... we don't stop...

All you need is a few thousand gallons of oil, butter, and salt and you could have a grand 'ol party!
The problem is, to get enough heat, it usually catches fire before it pops.

Trust me, we've had 2 corn dryers catch on fire over the years.

And you like talking junk to me.....
I didn't completely disappear for months at a time. :rolleyes1

Congrats on the raise! :thumbsup2
Thanks. The timing was great. Relieved some stress.

Reading your plans are like reading my own.... there is never enough down time. Hopefully you are able to fit everything in that you want.
I know. I always want more down time, but there's always too much to do!

Wow, this came quickly!
::yes::

Oh cool! Hopefully your FiL will get to dip his toes in. :groom:
DW and MiL are all excited about making sure he sees the ocean. I can totally see him being less than impressed by it.

Holy cats that is a lot of corn, I'm exhausted just reading about your jobs. Multiple ones! Amazing you have time for an update at all.
It has been busy, for sure!

HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY!

:bday:
Thank you!

The plans look good but I have to ask...

Disco Yeti?
:lmao::rotfl2::rotfl: Sorry, that must just be a DisDads term. Expedition Everest. The yeti with the strobe light... Disco Yeti.

Skipping ITTBAB seems wise.... or split up!
Yeah... we haven't done this one since 2008, and I'd love to see it again. But if there's a fly in the room, DD will freeze in her tracks, point at it and yell bug until someone kills it or at least scares it away. I think that attraction would be an absolute disaster.

I don't know what happened, but I realized today that your trip is getting close and your PTR wasn't showing up in my subscriptions. I have a bad habit of accidentally unsubscribing to TRs on my phone.

I'm enjoying the life updates and good for you that you got a raise for the extra work you're doing. I find the parts about the farming fascinating. My background is so much related to computers, programming and that sort of stuff, I've never really known about what goes into jobs that are the backbone of our daily lives. Where would we be without corn and soybeans? :confused3

I can't even imagine how huge that stack of corn is! :faint:

That's awful about all the DL refurbs. HM is to be expected, they have to remove the NBC overlay, it's always down in September and January, but WoC and the Matterhorn!!!! I hope they fix the new Matterhorn, the old bobsleds were much better.

That's too bad about the A&E meet up times. The ship was great, you got one pass for your whole stateroom. I hope that the meet works out. Otherwise, it sounds like you have some very busy days at WDW! You got a lot of great rides with FP+ and I hops your DS enjoys his first rides on the Big Coasters!

Yep... been there, done that, don't know how it happens. :rotfl2:

Thanks. It is something I've always been around, but I always enjoy talking about it and sharing information about what we really do with those who might not know.

Yeah... I can't say that I'm surprised by HM. I kind of expected that one, but the rest... just brutal! :faint:

That would be nice. I really don't care to meet them, but I'd like to be able to go in with the kids rather than sit outside waiting. It isn't even in a park where I can grab a beer while I wait! :rotfl2::lmao:

Now that I'm home and all caught up, I can wish you a happy belated birthday!:cool1:

And wow, that is a lot of corn!! You really need this vacation after working so hard lately.

I think that your plans look great, and I hope that you can keep that DHS schedule to get in what you want to see.

Great updates!! Life does have a way in getting in the way of DISing and Disney trips, doesn't it.
Loved your snow. I hope our snow doesn't happen Dec 30-Jan 1 or Jan 8-10. Will cause traveling difficulties for us getting to and from Florida. I've not driven in years and we are this year. Please no snow!!pixiedust:
I hope you are getting ready for your trip. I've started a little packing, not a lot yet.:rotfl2:

First off, Happy Belated Birthday! :cool1: And such a sweet story about your grandpa wanting you to see your first snow. The last time it snowed here was back in 1999 and it was only a couple of inches. I'm not sure what the protocol is for snow days where you're from, but all schools were cancelled :lmao::rotfl2: No one knew what to do!

Such a cool video!

Oh wow that picture of all that corn is insane!

I was thinking the same thing this morning as I was trying to write up our schedule for WDW. We're at 38 days out now, and i'm wondering what happened to all that time in between!

Your plans look great! Thank goodness Cynthia asked about 'Disco Yeti', I was about to Google it to see what I was missing out on :lmao:

My birthday was Monday.

Happy belated bday!

I woke up to see this:

20141117_071135.jpg

A hill? With trees?

Gotcha.

What do you normally see? Skyscrapers, I'm betting.

My mom called to remind me that the last time it snowed here on my birthday was the day I was born. My Grandpa came to the hospital and made sure someone took me over to a window so that I could see my first snow!

Great story!

I was. And I watched it, too.
Thanks for that.

We’re glad to be done with harvest. It was a record crop this year. We handled more corn and soybeans than we ever have. Unfortunately, profit wise, this has been probably the lowest income crop we’ve raised since I became involved in the management side of our family farm 10 years ago due to high input (fertilizer, seed, fuel, etc.) prices and commodity prices being about half of what they were a year ago.

Are prices low because it was a good year?

We have a lot of customers who still have a lot of acres to get across.

"Get across"
Does that mean harvested, but not delivered yet?

Last year, this location handled about 2 million bushels of corn more than we’d ever handled before. This year… well, we’re on the verge of beating that number by another 2 million bushels. We’ve loaded about 900 rail cars here since harvest started… that’s over 3 million bushels of corn.

That's a whole lotta corn.
Just out of curiosity, do you know if the bulk is intended for human consumption, animal consumption or fuel?

And in case you’re wondering what 2 million bushels of corn looks like… this is a pile of 1.8 million bushels. We did actually get it covered before the weather turned bad, so it should be in good shape when we open it up next spring!

That looks a little different than the frozen corn I have in my freezer.
Might be a bit more.

Might.

The good news is that despite my added duties, I’m being given some recognition from the company and receiving a raise slightly above cost of living.

Congrats!

First of all, we’re 23 days away. Which is a totally random number… nothing of any significance. But now that I’ve sat here and counted it out… Wow… it is coming up fast!!!!

Anything less than a month counts.

Friday - Load up and hit the road, hopefully around 8 or 9 pm.

Saturday – Arrive at Art of Animation, hopefully around noon or earlier.

So you're driving through the night? Or are you stopping somewhere?

FiL has never seen the ocean.

Make sure you let us know what his reaction is.

All your plans sound good to me.

Now that I'm home and all caught up, I can wish you a happy belated birthday!:cool1:
Thanks!

And wow, that is a lot of corn!! You really need this vacation after working so hard lately.
I definitely do. I was looking forward to a 4 day weekend for Thanksgiving this week... but looks like I'm working Friday and maybe Saturday too. :headache:

I think that your plans look great, and I hope that you can keep that DHS schedule to get in what you want to see.
I hope it works out!

Snow doesn't bother me much. It's the ice that I hate! I always prefer driving when the weather is crappy as opposed to flying. At least I have the option to try to drive through it or stay where I am, as opposed to being stuck in an airport for who knows how long.

:rotfl2::lmao::rotfl: Yeah... there wasn't even a delay. School proceeded as usual.

Oh wow that picture of all that corn is insane!
Supposedly, when the CEO of our company was in his teens, he would ride an ATV up the pile. That is insane... :lmao:

I was thinking the same thing this morning as I was trying to write up our schedule for WDW. We're at 38 days out now, and i'm wondering what happened to all that time in between!
In a way, I'm glad that I've been busy and it kind of snuck up on me. Otherwise it would feel like it will never get here! :rotfl:

Your plans look great! Thank goodness Cynthia asked about 'Disco Yeti', I was about to Google it to see what I was missing out on :lmao:

I thought Disco Yeti was a more widely used term than it is. I've just seen it so many times, apparently in Disdads posts, that I've adopted it as common terminology. :rotfl2:

Happy belated bday!
Thanks!

Are prices low because it was a good year?
In a way... supply and demand... basically record poor production in 2012 due to the drought drives crop prices and input costs sky high. Follow that with a near record high production in 2013... crop prices dropped 30% - 50% from 2012, while input costs stayed high. For 2014, input costs still stayed at the 2012 and 2013 levels, while grain prices came back down to pre-2012 levels with 2 huge crops back to back.

"Get across"
Does that mean harvested, but not delivered yet?
No, it is acres of corn still standing in the fields that needs to be harvested. Corn that has been harvested already is either in the grain elevator or stored on the farm. That corn will be shipped to market all year long until it is time to harvest next year's crop.

That's a whole lotta corn.
Just out of curiosity, do you know if the bulk is intended for human consumption, animal consumption or fuel?
From this elevator, I'd say 50% human, 30% animal and 15% export, 5% fuel based on our recent shipping history.

Most corn here is shipped on rail to a sweetener plant. They produce high fructose corn syrup and corn meal and then by products can be used for animal feed.

We also occasionally load trains to go to the Southeast for livestock feed and we load an occasional train to go to the Ohio River to be loaded onto barges and then eventually loaded onto cargo ships for export in New Orleans.

On a rare occasion, we might ship some by truck to local ethanol plants. But they're the competition, so they've got to really be willing to pay for the corn before we'll sell anything to them! :rotfl2:

Driving through the night. I'll be home at noon on Friday and sleep until it is time to leave. I prefer to do it that way and drive all night so the kids will sleep. If it all goes well, I won't have to stop until I need gas. And then the second stop will be breakfast and we'll be well south of Atlanta by then. :thumbsup2

Make sure you let us know what his reaction is.

All your plans sound good to me.
Ok

Thanks!

I know it, and I'm not technically a Disdad.
I didn't even comment on it.

Very interesting. I mean that.
I guess it's everyday stuff to you, but to a city slicker like me, it's fascinating.

OK, Disneyland vets. I finally managed to get myself back over to doing some planning for that trip. I don't know if we want to do any/many table service restaurants, but I want to go ahead and get a few reservations in case we decide we do want to. I know very little about Disneyland restaurants, so I need some input or suggestions for places that someone just can't miss if they have a chance to try it. We're most likely looking for lunch spots so give me your top choice in each park and DTD.

As of right now... My hope is that DW and I can go to Trader Sam's on our arrival day for an early dinner before kids are banned for the night.

I'm also considering seeing if DW and I can get a date night to go to Napa Rose at some point.

As of right now, the only reservation we have is for the new Fantasmic on the go dinner package for Friday evening. It appears to me that Fantasmic and Fireworks might only happen on Friday night while we're there so we'd have to do both that night? No actual showtimes have been released, but based on what I'm seeing from last year, this would appear to be the case. At the same time though, they're offering the dinner package on other nights, so I really don't know what to make of that. I can see us booking the package only to have our reservation canceled once they release the show schedule or something. Is it reasonable to be able to see Fantasmic and get a decent view of the fireworks on the same evening?

Thanks in advance, and I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving!!! :thumbsup2

In my experience, it is pretty tough to manage Fantasmic and fireworks on the same night if the showtimes are close together. It could be doable though, and is worth attempting at least!

As for restaurants, we loved our meal at Steakhouse 55 but that is really the only sit down we have done at DL. We have been so short on time on our past couple of trips that I didn't want to spend a lot of time on meals. I'm hoping for a couple more on our upcoming trip since we will have a whole week. Naples at DTD is pretty much Via Napoli and has the 4 cheese white pizza. Just sayin'. :rolleyes1

I'm kind of hoping that once Disneyland releases a schedule for that week, there might be more opportunities to catch them and we won't have to do it all in one night. We'll see though. It seems like it is a little more difficult to find reliable information for Disneyland planning than for Disney World though.

10 Days...

 :yay: :woohoo:  :yay: :woohoo:

It will be here soon! I have 3 more days at work this week and then I'm done "working" until our trip! I'll be at a conference on Monday and Tuesday next week, followed by a day off on Wednesday and another conference Thursday through Friday morning... but I'll be bailing on that one by noon to head home and rest up for the drive. I'm already getting into coast mode leading up to the trip. We finally got these in the mail just last week.

We still haven't seen the bands for MiL and FiL yet, but according to MDE, they shipped yesterday.

No changes in plans for this trip since the last update, but we are trying to work on some plans for Disneyland. Any suggestions for possible restaurants to try when we get there would be appreciated. My parents still haven't booked anything for Disneyland yet. I'm starting to get nervous as to whether they will now, or not. Dad wasn't exactly excited when they got the price tag for the trip. :worried:

:woohoo::woohoo::woohoo: for Magic Bands. Enjoy your last couple of days of work and then a couple conferences and then off to see everyone's favorite mouse.

:cheer2:Magic bands!!yeah!!:cheer2: Less than 2 weeks:dance3:

We loved the character interaction and meal at Goofy's Kitchen at DLH. It was great. I wasn't sure how much the character's would interact with 2 adults and 2 teen girls 13 and 14 at the time. It was wonderful. Goofy drew the genie in a bottle and Alladin. I still have that. The characters all came around multiple times.

Tell your dad that DL is worth the price tag. If the Lilly Belle is on the train ask the conductor if you can ride in it. It was out on a Sunday. It was so cool but in reality very hot. We were there in June and it was unseasonably warm. At the same time you can see Walt and his family riding around the park with you in the Lilly Belle.

Whoo! Your trip is close! It'll be here before you know it. Having the MagicBands on hand makes it extra real.
I just realized I'll be missing you guys by days next week. My mom and Landon are staying the night of the 11th at Pop Century so we can go to Seaworld the following day. I'll make sure AoA is in tip top shape for your arrival...

I have heard that the character buffets at DL are amazing. Kind of blow WDW's out of the water. But that's all the help I can give. Sorry.

We rarely do TS restaurants at Disneyland since we go all the time. It's been a few years but we've really enjoyed Blue Bayou. The setting is so relaxing and calm and the food is delicious! But the French Market requires no reservations and is really good! Went in July the first time and in October, DH requested we do it again, so he really enjoyed it.

River Belle Terrarce has a great breakfast menu and my mom really likes their sandwiches there for lunch. No reservation.

Jolly Holiday supposedly has great sandwiches, but it's always been too busy for us to visit. We have had their desserts and they are fantastic!

Over at DCA, I really really enjoy Wine Country Trattoria. They have the best Lasagna!

In the Pacific Wharf area, there are lots of options. The line for Pacific Wharf Cafe is always busy, especially in the cooler season when people want the bread bowl chowder and soups. A quieter option is on the other side of Paradise Pier where they have pizza and pastas and LOTS of seating. We've been over here a few times to get away from crowds and noise.

DTD, obviously EoS is a popular and relatively inexpensive choice. Otherwise, we're big fans of ESPN Zone and their burgers...and for the sports :thumbsup2 Alison will say Uva Bar for the Lamb Burger, i'm sure. Jazz Kitchen for lunch was really good also. If you're looking for something quicker downtown, Tortilla Jo's Taqueria has really good burritos and is fast.

Just a note: we've eaten at the Storytellers Cafe once for lunch and a few times for dinner and have always had a great experience here. Not sure if they still have it set up the same, but they used to have a buffet dinner or you could do a la carte. Nice options to have! It's over at the GCH.

If there is ANYWAY to get to Napa, you won't be disappointed! It is absolutely fantastic and i'd eat at only QS restaurants at the parks to make up for eating at Napa Rose. Even if you guys can just make it for appetizers and drinks in the lounge, do it! Amazing!

Oh Alison where are you?! She'll have better suggestions, i'm sure.

As for watching both the shows, i'm of no help. People do it though! I think you're able to see some of the fireworks near the Fantasmic seating area (without the castle in view obviously).

Woo hoo for Magic Bands! :cool1::cool1::cool1: And it really sounds like you are on the wind down as far as work is concerned. Nice! You must be getting SO excited by now!!!!!!

I am no help whatsoever for the DL trip, but I hope your parents don't decide they don't want to go. :faint: That would be bad.

I can't help you with restaurants cuz I have no idea....

but those magic bands are sure purttttty! :lmao:

This month is going to fly by. I've had a couple of things come up and I'm barely even going to be in the office Thursday and Friday this week. Still working... but not here.

:cheer2:Magic bands!!yeah!!:cheer2: Less than 2 weeks:dance3:

I'm hoping that they'll still go. Thanks for the info about Goofy's Kitchen. I was kind of thinking about that one, but I don't know if we'll want to do a character meal or not. Might be worth it if they're that good there though...

Whoo! Your trip is close! It'll be here before you know it. Having the MagicBands on hand makes it extra real.

Wow... just going to miss each other by a couple of days and an hourglass lake. Tell them to have our room ready so we can check in early... :rolleyes1

I've heard some good things about Tortilla Jo's. We'll probably try to check it out at some point. I'd looked at Blue Bayou for the Fantasmic package, but decided against it when I saw the prices. I think if we can work in Napa Rose, that will probably be our "expensive" meal of the trip. :rotfl2: Thanks for the information, it definitely helps! :thumbsup2 Most places at Disneyland can be done on a walk up basis though, right? Kind of thinking we might try that for most of it as opposed to locking ourselves into a certain time slot with reservations.

Woo hoo for Magic Bands! :cool1::cool1::cool1: And it really sounds like you are on the wind down as far as work is concerned. Nice! You must be getting SO excited by now!!!!!!

::yes:: I've seen so many pictures of them. But there's nothing like holding one in your hand that has your name on it. :thumbsup2
