How Early is Too Early to Plan??? - TR Link Added - 12/29

FP+ booked.

Yay!

Stayed up until after midnight to do it.

Ugh!

The whole experience caused un-Disney like words to come out of my mouth on more than one occasion.

Ooh!

Okay. Done with the one word comments, now.

I still don't deny that FP+ and the ability to change FP+ reservations on the fly will be a good thing. But the ordeal of using the MDE website and booking them 60 days out... :badpc: :badpc: :badpc:

So you would prefer sixty one days out.
Check.

I really don't care to meet them, but it is ridiculous that you have to have FP+ just to stand there and see your kids meet a character.

Ya know. I never even thought of that.
"No thanks, I don't want to meet them.
Just my underage child who must be accompanied.
Whaddya mean I need a FP too????"

Eh... whatever. Only took about 500 trial and error attempts to finally find individual FP+'s for them to have a 20 minute overlapping window together on our 7th and final day.

:headache: D'oh! Gee, that... well... sucks!

Yes, I'm a little bitter about not being able to get the A&E FP+ for all of us together when booking at midnight 67 days out...

That is ridiculous.
Really it is.

Sorry. Lack of sleep from the past few weeks followed by staying up late to deal with FP+ has me a little edgy this morning. Rant over. :lmao:

I think we'll give you a pass on this one.
You've earned a rant, I think.

You know how I had told you that I had booked us @ DLH for next year? Well, after we got back from WDW last Saturday, I ended up calling & changing us to GCH! Too funny that that is where you booked as well. I had the same thought as you.....the $370 more for all 5 of our nights was well worth it! Will you do a TR for DL? I sure hope so! :goodvibes

Glad you were able to get your FP's made. After our week there @ the beginning of October, I will say that I didn't completely hate the new system but I do prefer the old one. We rode pretty much everything we wanted to but mainly only once. Whereas in the past, we would ride our favorites multiple times. It didn't break our vacation. In fact, it was one of best trips yet. But, I definitely prefer the old FP system. I will say though that we absolutely LOVED the magic bands. They make everything so convenient & easy!

Okay, so i'm a little confused. It seems as if you and Phil had the same issue on getting everyone in your party the same times to meet A&E. I guess I don't understand why your entire party (booked under one reservation) can't select all the same times for every single attraction. Does this only happen for the M&G's or ride attractions as well?

Sorry if this doesn't make sense, but i'm trying to grasp the way the website is now setup as it sounds different from when I did it over a year ago...

I feel your pain on the big group bookings or just the ability to pick times in general, very frustrating. Yes it works but it takes 3 or more steps to get what you really want when it should be able to be done in one.

Sorry I've been somewhat absent from the boards for the past week. It has been crazy busy.

Congrats on getting your FP+. I'm sorry it was such a hassle. I'm not looking forward to doing it for next years trip and I will just be making plans for 1. I can't imagine doing it for a large family.

Jill in CO
Thanks. It isn't the worst thing ever, but they could definitely make it more user friendly in a few regards. I think you'll find it very easy to get what you want planning for just one though. :thumbsup2

I'm going to be very nice today since you are over the edge. Perhaps I'll hold off until tomorrow doing an update so you don't rant on my TR. ;)

I'm glad, despite the headache, you got the FP+.
Thanks. Got most of them anyway. :thumbsup2

Not sure how bust it is going to be when you go, but we found we could adjust times on the fly for every FP we had except 7 dwarfs and TSM.
Yeah, that seems to be the consensus with most of them. Even after I booked them I've come back and changed times on a few with ease. The exceptions being 7DMT and A&E.

Hey, at least you got them. Keep checking, maybe something will open up. Don't forget to check just before your 45 day mark when people start canceling.
I've been checking daily. I haven't had any luck at all, but I keep checking. :confused3

That would make everything go faster. Not sure why it doesn't let you do that. :confused3
I know. Just one of my many frustrations with the Disney website. It has never been all that user friendly in a lot of regards. And as much as they want their paying guests to rely on it, I can't understand why it isn't?:confused3

Go have a drink. You deserve it.
Sounds like a good idea to me!

Yay!

Ugh!

Check.
Something like that... :headache: :rolleyes1

Ya know. I never even thought of that.
"No thanks, I don't want to meet them.
Just my underage child who must be accompanied.
Whaddya mean I need a FP too????"
I had that happen with legacy FP one time. We grabbed an FP for DS to meet Mickey. Didn't even think about getting individual FP's for all of us. :headache: :lmao:

:headache: D'oh! Gee, that... well... sucks!
It does, indeed. :sad2:

That is ridiculous.
Really it is.
Pretty much. It really is just a crap shoot as to whether you can get one or not. I did everything I could to book the minute it was available to me. :confused3

I think we'll give you a pass on this one.
You've earned a rant, I think.
Thanks!

Great minds... :thumbsup2:rotfl2:

I probably will. We'll just have to see. Here lately I've not had much time to even log in and keep up with TR's I follow so I just don't know. With Disney World and Disneyland back to back in just a month's time, I'd love to do a big TR... :confused3

Yeah, I can see it being that way for me too. What you're saying makes a lot of sense. I always used to use FP to get multiple rides on some favorites. And with the new system, I can see it playing out much, much differently. On the bright side, it should make for less running around grabbing FP's for me... but definitely not as many rides on some of our favorites.

Okay, so i'm a little confused. It seems as if you and Phil had the same issue on getting everyone in your party the same times to meet A&E. I guess I don't understand why your entire party (booked under one reservation) can't select all the same times for every single attraction. Here is what happened. There are 6 of us... 5 of which are of the age that they have park tickets and need FP+. So when I originally booked FP+, I was searching for FP's for a group of 5. It showed nothing available.

I saw a tip elsewhere to try booking the FP for just one person in your party if there's nothing available for the whole group. When I did that, I found some FP+ available for A&E. I was able to find an FP+ for all of us, but there was only a 20 minute window where 3 of those FP+ windows overlapped.
Here's what I ended up with:
  • Me: 11:20 - 12:20
  • DS: 2:20 - 3:20
  • DW: 2:50 - 3:50
  • MIL: 3:00 - 4:00
  • FIL: 3:20 - 4:20

DS, DW and MIL have a common window from 3:00 - 3:20. FIL could probably get in with them on his 5 minute window at like 3:15, but as it stands now, I'm standing outside watching the stroller while they go to the M&G. I highly doubt I'll be going to meet them by myself. :lmao:

Sorry if this doesn't make sense, but i'm trying to grasp the way the website is now setup as it sounds different from when I did it over a year ago...
It does make sense. I didn't even think about trying that until I was frantically searching for information after I failed to be able to book it! I don't think they changed anything, this is just a work around if you can't get what you want.

I feel your pain on the big group bookings or just the ability to pick times in general, very frustrating. Yes it works but it takes 3 or more steps to get what you really want when it should be able to be done in one.
Yeah, that really seems to me like it is a Disney problem. Their website has never been the most seamless, user friendly experience. I was hoping the whole MDE push would improve that. Maybe it will eventually. :confused3

Ugh - the FP+ booking sounds very unpleasant. Next year will be my first experience with it - really not looking forward to it. Maybe Disney will have improved the process a bit by then......

Sorry the FP booking ordeal did not go smoothly. I agree that it is extremely time consuming and frustrating to have to go through a million steps to change the time on a reservation. Especially if one of the existing reservations overlaps a time you're trying to change. Then you have to go change that one, then go back to the original Fastpass in question. Oy!:headache:

Sorry I have been gone. Computer went in the shop for three weeks.
Loved you pics from the farm, and the explanation on how things work. I haven't been on a combine in 15 years or so. Nice to see what has changed.

I think you made a great choice for DL. I can't wait to hear more.
Wow what a mess getting your FP+. Can you imagine the poor people planning their first trip. I was overwhelmed back in 08 just having to decided on ADR. I was glad that my sister in law went to a TA (and not a good one at that) a little before our 60 day mark.

I am so exciting that your trips are getting close. Happy Planning!!

I really hope they improve it. It seems like it should be an obvious, and somewhat easy fix. Just a tweak of the software.

Yep. Not seamless at all. It seems like they should easily be able to make it more user friendly.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing about this whole FP+ thing. I mean, I'm always checking out the Disney fan sites, listening to the podcasts and I feel like I'm generally well informed. But there was a lot about this new system that required a lot of thought, second guessing, and triple guessing. I did sit back and think that if I was some random person off the street booking my family's first ever trip to Disney World, I'd probably just say screw it, let's go to Universal instead. :rotfl2::lmao::rotfl:

Holy Refurbs!!!

Ok, now that we've booked our Disneyland trip and have things pretty much on cruise control heading towards our Disney World trip, I decided to take a look at some day to day plans for Disneyland. I looked at the refurb list and kind of lost my mood to plan beyond that. I think they've done everything short of just closing the park the week we'll be there. Here's a list of attractions we won't be doing in Disneyland:

  • Splash Mountain
  • Peter Pan
  • Pooh
  • Haunted Mansion
  • Soarin
  • Luigi's Flying Tires

A few of these are really no big deal. I mean we enjoy Soarin' but no big deal to miss out on it since we'll be doing it in Disney World. Same goes for Peter Pan, Pooh and Splash Mountain. But I was really looking forward to seeing the Disneyland version of Haunted Mansion. In fact, we're going to miss HM in Disney World for refurb also, so 2 Disney trips in 2 months, with no HM!!!!! :headache:

I understand that Luigi's Flying Tires is likely headed to extinction according to the rumor mill. I'm not going to lose any sleep about missing this one, but I was hoping to experience it once, even if it is a flawed design. :rotfl2:

But...

That's not the end of the list.

There are 2 more refurbs that are absolutely killing me right now.

2 Disneyland exclusive attractions that I have been looking forward to experiencing myself ever since the idea of sneaking up to Anaheim after my conference crossed my mind. One of them was something that was absolutely going to be one of our top 2 must do's.

Matterhorn Bobsleds

World of Color :headache: :faint:

And thus, the excitement for planning our trip was killed. Particularly since planning that WoC dinner package is no longer a priority, and we now have an evening freed up.

I understand refurbs happen, and they've got to do it from time to time to keep things functioning. But with this being our "once in a lifetime" type visit to Disneyland, it is kind of depressing.

Sorry about your refurb list. I remember how I felt when I found out they were closing down HM in WDW just before our trip. A little bit crushing. And then they decided to shut down Maelstrom for a Frozen refurb, that was pouring lemon juice in the wound. But looking at your list, I really feel bad for you.

Once again, I'm sorry.

I feel your pain! Small World, Nemo Subs, and Indiana Jones were all closed on my trip to DL in March. :(

Jill in CO

WOW! That list would depress me as well. I'm so sorry. And why so much at one time?

Wow... that is a long list and WOC would just kill me.

How long is WOC gonna be down? Any chance of changing dates to fit it in?

HM too???? UGH

Yeah, it kind of stinks... I was disappointed about HM being closed at Disney World, but I was ok with it since I'd get to do the Disneyland version later. Oh well, the best laid plans...

I don't know. Everything on that list is closing sometime between 1/5 and 1/12. So I don't know if Jan/Feb is their down time so they just do everything at once or what? :confused3

HM goes down 2 days before we arrive and will only be down for a week and a half. I assume that is for the removal of the holiday season overlay? Don't they do something special for nightmare before Christmas there?

WoC goes down on 1/7 and is down until 3/12.

There's really no way I can reschedule the trip. We're piggybacking on this conference I have to go to in order to save expenses, so I guess it is what it is. I'll just have to settle for youtube videos of WoC. :sad2:

Unfortunately, I think you are falling victim to DL getting ready for the 60th anniversary in July. I went through the same thing in 2005...I went in March a lot of the big stuff was closed since they were getting ready for the 50th.

Jill in CO

I'm right there with you on WoC...I could handle pretty much everything else, but OMG I wanted to cry when I heard about WoC!! We were planning to save DL until like 2016, but decided to go sooner because we wanted a place to go earlier in the year that wasn't a lot of points for our timeshare, and it seemed to fit the bill.

Okay thanks for the explanation. Can you try explaining the situation to the CM at the FP+ entrance and say that all but one of your times overlap and see if they'll allow you go through?:confused3

Man those are some pretty big attractions that will be refurbed. That really stinks that you won't be able to check out HM. All the others, you're right on about. Luigi's Tires is TERRIBLE, so that's a good thing, forces you to try other things. On the brightside, with all these refurbs, that probably means they're forcasting for lower crowds.

....and I just finished reading further down on your update. NOT WOC!?!

Where did you find the refurb list at? I'm actually really shocked that one of their major draws to DCA is down and for how long the projected time is.

Honestly, I would be really bummed out too. Hopefully the list cuts down a bit and is mostly rumors if anything.

Yeah, I figured that might have something to do with it. But really... Why everything at the same time??? :headache:

Yeah... I saw that and for like a split second I was thinking we should just cancel, save the money and go back in a couple of years. :faint:

It's still Disneyland. It's Walt's park. And we will have a great time. But I'm extremely depressed about finally getting to go to Disneyland and miss out on WoC.

Okay thanks for the explanation. Can you try explaining the situation to the CM at the FP+ entrance and say that all but one of your times overlap and see if they'll allow you go through?:confused3
We can try it. Certainly can't hurt, but I'm not going to count on it getting anywhere.

The list came from touringplans, so I feel pretty confident that it is probably accurate.

http://touringplans.com/disneyland-resort/closures#

I'm sure, like it was mentioned above, that it is for the 60 year celebration. Maybe they're going to re-work WoC for some special edition show to commemorate the occasion? Either way it sucks because I'll miss out on the old show and the new one. :headache:

Oh no! That's terrible. I mean, it's not cancel your reservations and boycott Disneyland-terrible, but that does suck. I mean, WoC? It seems ridiculous to have that many attractions/shows closed at once. Even if the park is prepping for the 60th and it is wintertime.
I can understand your frustration.
