How Early is Too Early to Plan??? - TR Link Added - 12/29

I won't try to talk you out of AoA. I just know that I could not stay there. It's very well done theme wise, but it's HUGE and very "busy."
Based on our differing feelings about some other resorts, I'll take this as a ringing endorsement. :rotfl2::lmao::rotfl:

A little heads up as I haven't gotten that far in my TR. As you know, we went the week after Thanksgiving (Tuesday to Sunday). It was a bit more crowded than the year before and we had a wait for several rides. I think the reason is that Thanksgiving was so late this year and the Christmas taping was that following Saturday (the 6th...and our last day there). Thanksgiving is late NEXT year too, so just take that into consideration. I don't think we are doing a December trip next year, but if we do, we will push it back a week to avoid the taping crowd.
Thanks for the heads up. I did notice that last year seemed more crowded than 2011, so this might be a bit of a trend that it is getting a bit more crowded that time of year. :confused3

Either way, this is pretty much the week we have to go. Either that or wait until the week of 12/15. I feel confident that we've picked the better option.

This is true; but I did eat at THAT resort earlier this month. :lmao::lmao::lmao:

My friend at work who is renting me the DVC points, went the week of December 16. The longest wait she and her son had for any attraction was 20 minutes.

Hey! Trying to catch up on TRs... Maybe staying caught up on them should be my New Years resolution. Well merry Christmas and Happy new year!!

Well, I understand your wife's logic and think it's a great idea regarding your FiL :) If AoA works- while it's not the ideal set up - your son would be in awe and budgets are always important! I want to stay there one of these days just to check it out ;)

:thumbsup2

Here's the link to that update, but I'll give the short version here...

One evening, we rode the monorail around the resort loop and noticed an excavator and other construction equipment at the GF.

Our second to last morning, we were planning to get to MK before RD because we hadn't seen the welcome show yet. We were staying at WL, and we got out early and caught the first boat of the day. Just before we got over by the Contemporary our boat stopped. And we sat. For a long time. They were moving a barge with that excavator on it and we couldn't move until it got clear of the area.

Why that couldn't have been done an hour or 2 earlier is beyond me. Anyway... we could see the singing and dancing at the train station from the boat as we pulled up to the dock. :faint:

Oh wow that totally sucks! I would have been quite upset, especially since everyone was out the door on time and on the boat. Geez!

Happy to hear about some progress on your trip. I think your son would absolutely LOVE AoA. I'd think as long as your IL's are okay with a bit of a tight squeeze, i'd do it. However, i'm used to squeezing in 5 adults in one studio - maybe it's the Mexican in me :lmao:

Subbing in!! I just have to tell you how incredibly beyond words adorably cute your kids are!!!!! OH MY!!!! Anywhoo... We stayed at SSR the 2nd week in December, and it was ok. We were in a 1bedroom. We stayed in a 2 bedroom with my parents 2 years ago, and loved it!! I would not hesitate to stay at OKW ever!! My dream is to stay in BLT though, so I can't say I would blame you for that option;)

Even though it is slow going, you are making some progress with these plans! AoA sounds like a perfect resort for your family at this time, your kids will really love it. This is one that our family is considering for our trip this year as well, although more for my 5 year old cousin than anyone else lol

It has been forever since I've been on the boards, so I'd also like to say that I hope you guys had a wonderful Christmas and New Years!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you, too!

That is kind of why I'm considering AoA. I know it isn't ideal at all, and we could stay other places for less money (and likely have more room), but I know DS will love it. And if I'm being brutally honest, I can't wait to check it out myself.

I was not happy at all. And the fact that I was standing on the front of the boat and it was a little bit chilly that morning didn't make me any happier.

I'm glad that there's at least one other person out there who doesn't think it is totally nuts to consider this.

I really need to find out about the fold out/pull out beds though. If they aren't comfortable, that could be the deal breaker.

Thanks. To be completely honest, I'd love to stay in every resort on property at least once just to get that first hand experience. But yeah, BLT is probably closer to the top of that list! :thumbsup2

:lmao: I just read your update and commented about your resort choices. Welcome back to the boards. The holidays were great for our family. Just think, next Christmas you'll have a little one crawling around, shredding wrapping paper. :thumbsup2

Andy, we went the 15th-21st in 2011. Crowds were not bad at all. We did notice an increase as the days got closer to Christmas, but it wasn't bad at all. Maybe 15-25 minutes for the big tickets which is nothing!

I liked your PTR title and decided to check it out. I am going to go back and read your other TRs now. I get your reasoning for not going this year but now I am second guessing taking my 3 year old and 18 month old. EEsh oh well only 26 days out now too late to turn back lol. Look forward to reading your PTR and TRs.

Not bad at all. I figured it would start to be a mad house around there by that Fri/Sat though. We might talk a little bit more about going that week instead. It might really work a little better, but I'm not sure we'll want to be getting back just a few days before Christmas. :confused3

Please, please don't second guess. You'll have a great time! We had several things factored into a decision to not go in 2013, so it wasn't just the kids' ages. But the fact that we'd have to pay for DS to go and he wouldn't be able to do much was something that we had to take into consideration. Your kids will still be able to do plenty, but we just didn't want to pay for DS to do the same basic things he was able to do the year before for "free."

OK... still not completely ruling out that week entirely yet. But I did do some research this afternoon, and if we were to stay at AoA, it would be over $100 more per night the week of the 15th vs. the week of the 1st. I haven't compared those dates at other resorts yet, but this definitely got my attention. :scared1:

I'll have you know that I told Mark if he wanted to stay at WLV in September we could. He chose NOT to. :)

Um thats a crazy insane amount more. We ended up falling into the last day of A free dining week by checking in the 15th like we did.

Who's Going Where When???

Ok, I've mentioned before that planning is going slowly because we're still trying to figure out who will join us. Well, at first, it looked like MiL was on the fence and might be joining us. Apparently, she really wants to go. But our planned week, the week after Thanksgiving, doesn't work very well for her. I've mentioned that we could change it to the week of the 12/15. I really don't want to, because it know it will be more crowded, but if it works best I can live with it. As of right now though, I think we're still planning for the week after Thanksgiving.

In addition to this, she is trying to convince FiL, who never wants to travel anywhere for more than 2 or 3 days to go with us. The last I heard, she convinced him to go because it will be a chance to make memories with his grandchildren. She knows just the right buttons to push. :rotfl2:

Anyway, it looks like we can go ahead an pencil them in to go with us. It is definitely changing the way I'm planning this trip though. FiL won't enjoy the parks. It won't be that he won't try, or that he'll complain, but he just isn't going to have fun there. He'll enjoy spending time with his grandkids, but he's not going to want to be in the parks all day, and by the 3rd or 4th day, he'll want to be back home. That's just how he is. When we go on vacations with them to Gatlinburg, it is his type of vacation. Maybe an afternoon of golf, but mostly just relaxing with the family. And even then he's ready to get back home after a few days.

It pains me to say this, especially after khertz went and got me all excited, but I think we are going to just have to cut any plans for Universal out of this trip and possibly even shorten our intended Disney stay. :sad1:

I'm not crazy about that aspect of it, but I truly am glad that FiL is joining us. I know that this isn't exactly something he wants to do, but he's doing it for his grandkids. I still want to make sure that we can at least make it as enjoyable for him as possible. One thing I'm sure he'll enjoy is Candlelight Processional, so I'm sure we'll be looking at getting a dinner package for that.

We did sit and look at some resort options last night. I'm kind of putting off the idea of AoA right now since it seems to me that we'd really be getting a little too crowded for a suite there with MiL and FiL. Out of the blue, DW mentions that she wants to stay at All Star Movies or All Star Music. :confused3 I just feel like slamming my head into a wall. We've even considered staying offsite in a vacation home or something. I kind of want to see where this Magic Band thing goes first. I wouldn't mind staying off property if it can save a lot of money, but if it ends up being a situation by this time next year that FP+ is more limited for offsite vs. onsite, it might not be worth it. Who knows...

I have looked into DVC rentals. While it is definitely a discount vs. rack rate, it is still a little bit more than we'd really like to spend this trip. Especially if we're going to try to hit Disneyland about a month later. Now, if Mom and Dad would end up going and we're splitting the cost of a 2 bedroom villa... that might make more sense. So it is still an option, but we'll just have to see where things go from here.

2 steps forward, 1 step back...

After some discussion, I think it is just going to be MiL and FiL going along with us. Which is fine. I just really want them to have a good time. I guess that means firs and foremost that I'm going to have to suppress my natural park commando tendencies.

Yeah, that is the biggest strike against staying offsite.

DW really, really wants to stay at AoA, but I just don't think there's any way there'd be enough room in one of those family suites for all of us.

Yeah, the parking expense could be a big one. Not sure an AP would make up the difference though.

Do you get parking with a regular AP?

Just a quick update on the last update... DW has made the point that while she agrees that her dad might have a little more fun if my parents went, she doesn't want to invite them. Her reason being that this is pretty much definitely going to be the only time her dad ever goes. She wants him to be in grandparent mode the whole time and spend more time just enjoying the grandkids and seeing things through their eyes. I can't disagree with that logic.

Hmmn. Ok I don't know her dad but from what you say, simply being in the parks may or may not have him in Grandpa mode as it is. It's a fine line and I think it is hard to get it quite right as what can happen (speaking from personal experience here on multiple grandparent and in law trips) is that said parents/grandparents have their own agenda...as do said grandkids and it isn't always compatible. Splitting up can keep the group sane and make the time together more enjoyable. Your kids are young enough that it may well not be an issue but it's not fun having frustrated kids b/c the grandparents are moving too slow, or frustrated grandparents who want to look at things or go on rides that the kids have no interest in. I see her point but I guess for me, if there is a possibility he opts out while there (as in stays back in the room with an I will join you later) versus giving hims someone his own age and interest to hang with...well it may be worth considering.

As a result, we are looking at AoA, once again. Yes, I know it will be ridiculously tight. But I think we can manage. I believe there are 2 bathrooms, and that is my biggest concern. I don't think we'll be spending a huge amount of time in the room anyway so although it will be tight, I don't think it will be too big of a deal. I think we'd just let MiL and FiL have the main bedroom. I don't mind sleeping on a Mater themed table bed. :confused3 I just hope it is long enough to accommodate someone who is 6'2".

I think this is a spectacularly bad idea. Sorry but honestly I do. Fine if it's just the 4 of you guys but 4 adults and someone 6'2 on a table bed? It's only a double, not any bigger than the sofa bed. We did the cabins at FW with a group of 6. Kids were 7,8,11,14. The murphy pull down was so small (double) that Jeff (who is at best 5'10 though he may try to say differently) and Taylor, who at the time was probably 5'9 or 9 could not sleep in it together. Jeff slept on it at an angle and Taylor took the couch. Kendall and I took the double bed in the bedroom and at 5'6 and 5'4 respectively at the time it was rather miserable. Then again she's a flopper. Holy lack of sleep and personal space. Then again I have a very hard time sleeping in the same room with my kids as it is so take that with a grain of salt. I completely get why you'd want to stay there. If my kids were little I'd be all over it too!!! Cost aside if it's the dream resort I'd do the suite for you guys and have the in laws in the little mermaid section. Cost not aside...I'd get 2 adjoining rooms somewhere else. Everyone will sleep a lot better regardless of how much you are in the room.

As for FP+ and MagicBands, there will definitely be a difference for onsite, versus off. Offsite appears it will work on a same day basis. You arrive at the park of your choice, go to a kiosk and book your 3 FP's. If you have MDE you can then change times from there but you cannot pre-book and you will not have a band. Onsite is band, ability to book up to 60 days ahead. Honestly even having the ability to book or change the night before does make a difference at a busy time. Then again, that is how it works now. Paper is being turned off at all parks by the end of the month. If they decide to sell bands, and pre-booking FP's to offsite, that will definitely change things but right now that is how it was working while we were there. My sister was at the Swan and they had the "day of" option. At AK, all offsite guests did, including the Swolphin.

I'm not sure, but it doesn't really pencil out for us either way.

Good points. You're right, you never really know how it will work out once you're there. It is just going to be our family with MiL and FiL though. I think it would have been fine if my parents had gone though, because the four of them go on trips every summer... without DW and me! :thumbsup2

Definitely valid points. I think it wouldn't be quite that bad with our kids though. DD will still just be 2 and will sleep in a pack n play. So basically DW and I would each have a fold out bed and one of us would have to share with DS. Which, quite honestly, is no different from most nights at home from around 3 or 4 am until it is time to get up and is likely how sleeping arrangements would end up if we had our own room at any other resort. The kid just doesn't sleep well and is scared of his own shadow. I worry about the comfort of the beds more so than anything else. My biggest concern is that DW is the one who will be miserable, which in turn, will make me miserable. :headache: She is very picky about how comfortable a bed is, but then again, she's the one who is dead set on AoA...
Me, I can sleep anywhere, so I'll deal with it if that's what we do.:confused3 That's just what dads do.

I see your point about doing a suite for us, LM room for them. I think it would be great to have a separate room to put DD in. She sleeps better when it is dark and quiet. If we would do 2 rooms though, I think we'd end up doing 2 regular rooms at another value as opposed to spending the extra for a suite for just the 4 of us. It is just too hard to justify that extra expense. My vote would be POP, DW, wants ASMo or ASMu if we go that direction.

Yeah... we're definitely leaning towards on site right now. This whole FP+ thing seems to be a huge variable that is a constantly moving target. I'm hoping that by the time we get there, it will be more permanent in its structure, but it seems that staying onsite will likely minimize some of the negative variables of it and maybe give us more flexibility. At least I hope that will be the case. :confused3 :rolleyes1

I think the challenge I'd have with the AoA scenario, comfort aside, is that you are all kind of held hostage whenever the kids need to go to bed. I had such a hard time with that when the kids were little. They needed to go down, when they needed to go down but that meant everyone did as mine can't sleep with any light or noise at all so no TV, no reading, no nada until they are out cold. That could be hard with that many adults in the rooms! What always ended up happening is I ended up in the dark quiet room with the kids so they could go down, while others stayed out. Not fun. LOL! If you had 2 adjoining rooms, you could put kids down, adults hang in the other room and it's much less painful for all. Not to mention more total beds. I'd probably look up upgrade to 2 rooms at a mod, which wouldn't be much more than the 1 AoA Family Suite and gets everyone queen beds. And if any deals do come out for that time period, often the mod deals are a little better.

Of course if she's dead set on it, it sounds like the decision is made. LOL!

Definitely more flexibility, plus EMH if you use it.

Disney On Ice

I still don’t have much to add about our trip plans. We’re still planning to have just our family and DW’s parents going along with us, but the whole “where to stay thing” is an ongoing debate. I’m hoping to get something booked soon and get moving on some more detailed planning. We have, however, decided to change our dates. Even though it is more expensive, we’re going to go the week of the 15th, just because it is more convenient for MiL.

Now, for an unrelated update: DS turns 4 tomorrow. Wow…

For part of his birthday present, we decided to get tickets to Disney on Ice, Princesses and Heroes. We went last night and it was a great show! We had a fun time. My only complaint is that even though “Heroes” is part of the title, there really wasn’t much heroic action in the form of the hero taking on a villain. Prince Phillip did take on Maleficent and the dragon, but that was pretty much it. I realize that they have to do the best they can to tell the various stories of 8 princesses in 2 hours, but it was a shame that a few of them just basically got one song to come out and skate without really even telling any of their story. They did this with Belle and DS was bummed. Big time.

She appeared in the spotlight as she entered the rink and DS jumped up and yelled “Belle!” Then as she proceeded to skate around with Lumiere and the silverware, he started becoming agitated asking where Beast was. I figured since they were skating to “Be Our Guest” that Beast might appear in the next song. Unfortunately, that was Belle’s only song and there was no Beast. DS wasn’t amused. :headache:

We, and everyone within earshot around use, had a fun moment with DS a little later in the show though. Rapunzel and Flynn Rider came out and he shouted “Flynn Rider!” Again, this was a princess that basically got to come out for one quick song without any story-telling, but the song was “I See the Light.” DS was watching intently. When the second chorus started he jumped up and started singing along. It was definitely funny and that instant alone made the whole night worthwhile.

DW forgot to take her brand new DSLR camera (why did I get that thing for her anyway?) :rolleyes1, but we tried to get some cell phone pictures of the show. Many were blurry, but here are a few of them:

And the finale.

I didn’t get very good pictures of a few of them, but we got to see Jasmine, Snow White, Belle, Ariel, Tiana, Aurora, Cinderella and Rapunzel.

We tried to get a picture of the kids… but you know how they can be about actually looking the same direction at the same time. I guess DD just wants us to get moving so she can go to bed.

Thanks for following along. I'm sorry there hasn't been much going on in this PTR as of late, but it was refreshing to get some Disney in our lives last night and get us re-charged and re-focused on planning this trip. We're excited to be going, and December can't come soon enough!

DW actually said at one point she was ready to leave tomorrow and was wiping tears away when the music started. I think she's officially almost as hooked on Disney as I am now.
