How early do they start letting people into Hollywood Studios when the park has a 9:00 opening?

On some dates, as early as 8:30am.

No way to know in advance how early, so better
to show up at the gates much earlier than the posted time and be ready.

Its random it opens at or before 9a. I'd say (and this is from watching what people post) it typically opens about 10 minutes early. But I've seen it reported open 40+ minutes early on big days like SWW.

It seems to be driven by how many guest are waiting to get in and if TSM, JTA and RnRC are ready for guests.

we went 7/4-7/11. We go here everyday first thing. Since Frozen started, they let you in about 8:45 but then hold you in the park by the hat for the Olaf show. They then open the park at 9... Which makes the TSM rush unreal

What about folks with an 8am H&V reservation? Are the being held at the hat as well? I booked one solely for the purpose of trying to ride TSMM and Meet Buzz and Woody within the first hour.
