How DVC Made Timeshares even worse

There’s a whole cottage industry of anti-Disney content on YouTube. Even a lot of channels that are enthusiasts and go to WDW almost every day will focus almost completely on the negatives and complaining. That’s what gets the clicks I guess And right now it’s fashionable in some circles to hate anything Disney related, so it’s probably worse than normal.
This is very true on facebook as well. Almost every article has a dramatic title, and when you finally realize what they are talking about it is either a nothing burger or just one person complaining about not get something ridiculous their way and wanting to vent.

Usually don't bother with podcasts but thought it might be fun to see what he had to say while I was eating breakfast this morning. I couldn't listen to more then a few minutes that flickering audio image on the screen was annoying and it seemed like he was having a phone call with some other person. Anything that starts out by telling us they are going to reveal some big scam ..............is usually a scam of its own...............LOL.

Too long/rambly, unfocused and it seemed like the intent was to produce a 70 minute podcast so they had to put in a LOT of filler to reach their time goal. Gave up after a few mintues.

My parents used to own a non-Disney timeshare and it was a total disaster for them when they finally got older and were no longer able to travel. There was ZERO resale market, but any number of scams out there offering to help them sell it. The value was basically -0- and they eventually just gave it back to the timeshare company to avoid future fees. Disney is a reputable organization and even though I would never own one, there IS an active resale market for DVC.

The podcast seemed like the person had an opinion about something, didn't do any real research and just cobbled together 70 minutes of rambly discussion that went nowhere. Would never listen to any other podcasts he might do in the future.

A little off-topic, but related to fashionable anti-Disney media: DH showed me an internet report with the headline “the dirtiest cruise ship, according to the CDC.” And at the top of the article was a photo of the Disney Wish. Wow, so that must be the dirtiest ship, right?

Guess what, if you actually read the article, way far down several paragraphs it says that the Disney ships have the best records, and the dirtiest ship is actually in the MSC fleet.

Makes you wonder about the thought behind using that stock photo of the Wish.

Oh the clickbait titles and headlines are shameless. “Beloved Disney World ride CLOSING!!!!!” with the obligatory shocked face thumbnail image. And then it will be about a planned refurb closing 🙄

It really insults your intelligence, but the sad fact is clickbaity articles and videos invariably get more views. So they’re here to stay unless there’s a sudden outbreak of integrity among content creators. 😅

Wait, in the one in a billion chance this is true.

I would like to offer my DVC Points disposal services to anyone that does not want their points and feels they need to give them away….

I have deeds, I will pay the recording fees.

All these “deprate” DVC owners need to do is message me and I’ll take care of the rest….

Dipping with sarcasm ….
I think I am going to start a "DVC Timeshare Escape" company/service. I will only charge you if and when I get you out of your DVC timeshare. This will not be a scam like those other time share escape companies. Please let me know if you are interested, I will only charge you $10 pp to get you out of your DVC nightmare.

Since we all agree that every timeshare is a worthless burden to the owner, I'll gladly get victims of this scourge out of their DVC contracts for FREE by accepting them as gratuitous transfers and taking over the MFs after I've rescued you from your DVC nightmare!

I hit a few points forward, but shut it down when I found that I'm one of the "fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a percent of owners who is satisfied with my points". Seriously? Who is this guy?

I was going to have to sell my 3 year old contract OKW - 520 points @ $109 for a massive loss (after paying it down for 3 years). Sure, I can rent my points and did yesterday, but the price has dropped unless you have Beach Club at 11 months out.
I still have all 1600 of my points but I am looking at making changes if the market ever comes back.
Sorry you find yourself in that position. I only have small points contracts due to my financial circumstances during that time when I was first in love with Disney/DVC. It's easy to be sucked in by the addonitis virus.

You're right about life turning on a dime. I hope you find a solution that doesn't hurt you too much.

After having seen your post, he has concluded that, like so many of us DVC owners, you are obviously just deluding yourself.

This is a new podcast I am working my way through.
Thanks for posting this. I found this on a pod cast a week or two ago. Thought I'd listen to a counter argument and see another opinion. I think its basically an attention grabber of some sort. Perhaps someone wanting to build a name for themselves or hits. I stopped halfway through. Red flags that I recall from memory:

  • its a terrible investment (DVC isn't marketed as an investment and it isn't an investment...its an expense and for enjoyment)
  • folks get locked in a room to listen to the DVC pitch for free park tickets (no locked rooms and where's my free tickets!!!!)
  • folks who own DVC are practically giving them away to get out from the contracts and expense (please private message me...I don't need more points but will gladly take your points for free and sell for some cash)
And if this is the podcast I'm thinking about, one of the speakers comments about going with a friend's family having DVC and how what a wonderful time they had....for free.

It felt overly rehearsed with buzzy attention grabbing comments.

My rule is that I do not open any article that I do not understand what it's talking about from the title.

Thank you for your kind reply. I think I will be able to manage keeping the points. Oddly, I'm not sure I want to now as my life isn't what I imagined when I bought them coupled with the fact that I now live in FLA and it's not the same all around escape that FLA/WDW/DVC/OKW offered. Neither of my grown children are interested in going despite going 1-2 times every year since they were toddlers. My daughter has cut off ties with my beloved grandchildren so they will not experience it. My son would rather inherit the money, "I am wasting" on my "ridiculous Disney obsession". Funny, I don't have a single Disney thing in my home except for DVC magnets and a few shirts. I hardly go to the parks. Yes, I did love the ability to escape to OKW and I have entertained friends well over 100 times. Please don't think I am destitute or anything like that eating Ramen to pay for my points. I have a fabulous career and my raise a month ago will cover most of the dues for the 1600 points. I also paid off one of the contracts that was financed. There are o many people with much more on their shoulders.
Your kindness is much appreciated today of all days. Thank you!

Shockingly, I've gotten no takers seeking my assistance in assuming their contracts to extricate them from their nightmarish DVC experience. You folks must all be deluding yourselves! :rotfl2:

Kind of a bummer. Kept waiting for some math heavy segment with spreadsheets and all! Maybe comparing discounted rack+investing to buying, or maybe renting vs. buying, or any other way to achieve same deluxe resorts without buying into dvc that made more financial sense long term.

Instead it was more of a discussion on how expensive Disney parks are these days. It’s a fair point, but that’s not really a dvc-specific issue. IMO stuffing a discussion on why Disney parks are overpriced under a dvc topic is kind of targeting the wrong audience. Feels like they’d get better clicks with a more generic “how Disney made theme parks even worse” than limiting their audience by using the less known dvc term in the title.
