When I attended High School 25 years ago I walked two blocks and waited for a yellow School Bus to take me to campus. We had a great time on the bus talking and carrying on. Now days I do not see any High School age kids waiting for a school bus.

Is it just my town, or do all High School kids drive themselves to school? Please reply to my poll and leave your comments.

My DD takes the bus. She goes to a school outside our boundary; however, the county offers alternative transportation to the school. She takes about a 15 minute walk through the neighborhood (with her friend) and they go to the neighborhood elementary school. From there, the bus takes them to the high school which is about 8 miles away.

DH drives him. He goes right past the high school on the way to work. At this point, during football season, DH drives him home too. Football practice doesn't end until 3 hours after school is out, and there is no late bus.

Edit: This is Barb D. Amo is 12, and has no DH or DS. And she takes the bus to middle school.

My kids always walked, we were only a few blocks away. If kids have to take the bus here it is public transportation they get a discount for using it when going to and from school. Some of their friends drove but parking was hard to find.

Where I grew up the yellow bus picked us up in front of our house.

DS 15 has to be on the bus for hour and a half before he gets to school and since I drive past his high school on my way to work I drive him there, however coming home he takes the bus. I can’t wait till he gets his license so he can drive himself there and back and help with some of the driving around town.

Last year juniors and seniors were allowed parking permits. This year it is only seniors. Either way my son is happy. He's a senior this year and drives himself.

DS drives himself but it is a family car, not his private car. We bought a car when DD was a senior so she could drive them both to school. After she headed off to college and he got his license his junior year, he started driving. The bus ride is too long for the distance and we live in a rural area so I would either have to pick them up or he would have to spena a loooong time on the bus.

DS (senior) and DD (junior) are within 1.25 miles of the high school, which the district considers walking distance. We allow DS to use a family car to drive them to school to avoid wet art projects, weak arms from carrying a saxophone, etc.

Our ds take the bus, they go to a private school but its 40 minutes away with no traffic. If ds wants to borrow my van to stay for something special that the late bus does not cover than I usually say yes, if he gives me a days notice at least so I can adjust my schedule etc. With the price of gas I tell him to limit it though, worse he is turnining my van into the TEEN TAXI!! He is always offering rides home to everyone etc. if he has my van. DH and I have lectured him about this, legal issues if there is an accident etc.

DS a senior drives himself, DD freshman doesn't want to ride with him, so she takes the bus.

we live about 3 miles from the HS and you cross a state highway to get there. He rides the bus to school, but I pick him up after school because he has drama until 5 everynight.

DS and DD attend(ed) private schools without bus service, so I have always driven them. DD started driving herself for her senior year, as will DS.

I take the big yellow. At our school, seniors get priority for the parking lot, then juniors. A lot of people catch a ride with friends, though.

One of the schools i our area failed to pass a millage so transportation was cut for middle and high school students. The millage will be put up again early 2006. If it does not pass there will be no busses for any students for 2006-2007.

DS#1 walks - we are only a few blocks away from the high school..

His 38 year old live-in GF usually drops him off on her way to work.

Speaking just for my family, I drop them off every morning. We are walkers and ikt takes about 15-20 minutes to walk. I'd rather they sleep that extra 15 minutes in the morning...cause then I can sleep another 15 minutes.

I drive my kids BUT...I work in the middle school where my boys are. the High School is connected to the MS by the pool ( think horseshoe) so I don't really think of it as 'driving' them to school. If I didn't work there they would walk if not too cold or rainy.
