How does your city handle trash pickup?

In my city, we purchase bags from the city at local grocery stores, leave the trash outside, and the city is supposed to pick it up. They charge $7.50 for a packagae of 5 bags. Only trash in the bags provided by the city will be picked up.

They didn't pick our trash up the past 2 weeks. We called this morning to find out why. Supposedly, there's a 15lb weight limit on your garbage.

Ummmmm, OK.:confused3

When we asked what we should do about the garbage we have for the past 2 weeks, we were told to seperate it so each bag is less than 15lbs. OK, so, they want us to go through 2 week old garbage, seperate it into different bags, and then weigh it?

Oh my, what a hassle!

We get three bins. One for any recycle (they sort it, not us), another for trash (it's really small, can only hold 2-3 kitchen sized trash bags) and one for yard debris. They send three different trucks once a week to pick them up.

We pay around $25/month for the service.

And that's why our city had the forsight (thank God) not to do the stupid pay for your bag thing. Our trash removal is paid for out of our property taxes. We have two large 45 gal. cans with lids and are on wheels. One for garbage one for recycling. They have talked about the pay for your bag thing a couple of times and sent it to the voters once, who crushed the idea.

We never have a problem like this with our trash but we had a similar problem with our yard waste. Our container was too heavy so they told us to separate it and so we did and then they picked it up. I can understand why they have these limits because otherwise it's probably too heavy for the garbage men to pick up and they probaby have hurt their backs doing this job.

I don't think you have to weigh it but I think they just want you to separate it so it's easier for the garbage men to pick up. Just my guess.

We either have to bring our own trash to the dump and purchase tickets to pay for each bag, or hire a private company to pick up our trash.

Consider yourself lucky.

I have never heard of this pay for your special bags thing. Wow!

We get a huge trash can with wheels from the trash people and two recycling bins. one for cans and one for everythng else.

Our trash can can be as heavy as we want it to be because the garbage truck picks the can up not the garbage men.

We put our trash out on Tuesdays and it costs about $25 a month.

We don't have trash pickup. If you want your trash picked up, you must contract with a private hauler. :)

We buy a sticker for the transfer station, buy bugs and then haul them ourselves. :headache:

Our bags do have weight restrictions printed right on them but since you haul your own and throw 'em yourself, they'd have to be pretty darn heavy to be noticed as overweight. :rotfl:

Other cities I have lived have also had pay-as-you-throw bags and most of those also have weight restrictions on the bags. To me, your situation is not uncommon.

One of the big reasons for this is to keep folks from dumping heavy and small construction waste into the municipal bags and not having to pay by weight to dump it.:cool2:

Our fees are in our taxes, so I have no idea the cost for trash pick-up. We are supplied large bins by the city and they are picked up once a week. We can pay for Yard Waste pick-up (we do at $60 yr) and are supplied a large bin for that. We also receive a box for recyclables that is emptied each week as well. All three trucks come to our house on Tuesdays.

We use just regular Glad bags or any other garbage bag brand. It goes out every two week .

Limit of 4 unless you buy a tag to put on extra bags. Or if your neighbour is nice he will let you put extra bags over there. We used to get it picked up every week but they want people to recycle more.

We use recycle bins ( small ones ) every week, used to be every two weeks but people stopped recycling once the bins were full. So they switched the garbage and recycle weeks around.

We have compost bins with lockable lids that go every week too. Makes for a lot less garbage.

Yard waste goes in paper bags picked up every week until July then every other week.

I am lucky to have one full bag on the second week.

Not sure how much we pay since it is in with the property tax.

Our neighrborhood contracts with a company to do it....we pay $25 or so a quarter. There are no bags or anysuch thing. You can put as much or little as you want out be in in trash cans, plastic bags or anyother method. They pick up once a week.

The only do "heavy" pick-up on things like refigerators and such once a month and I don't believe there is an extra charge, but have never set anything like that out before.

We either have to bring our own trash to the dump and purchase tickets to pay for each bag, or hire a private company to pick up our trash.

I would gladly bring our trash to a city dump. We no longer have one though.

In our town, you have to purchase a "rolling barrel" from the town. You have your choice of two sizes; I believe we bought the smaller one at $60-something. They will not take any garbage that is outside this barrel or in a different barrel; it MUST be in the town-approved barrel that can be attached to the mechanical arm on the truck. And the lid MUST be closed; if it isn't, then it's considered a "large item pickup." You then need to call and schedule this large item pickup and pay an extra fee. Or get a landfill permit and haul it yourself.

It's kind of ridiculous; we usually have just ONE bag of garbage for the week (I am militant about recycling, for which they also provide free bins and pickup). We used to put out the one bag, but instead of picking it up six inches and throwing it into the truck, they leave a note on it to contact the town for barrel purchase :sad2:

We don't have any charge and there is no limit. Those who have a shred of pride in their surroundings will make the effort to take the bags of garbage to a trash dumpster.

Goodfellas makes the call on who and when garbage will be picked up. if they are unhappy about something, it just piles up until they are happy again. Sort of like how things were early last year. ;) Fortunately, things have improved and people are starting to make the effort to keep things a bit cleaner. Still plenty of trash left on the sides of the road though.

Our city doesn't do anything, they don't offer any trash service. We are free to pay our own private company to come get it.

We have to pay a private company to pick up our garbage. There are a bunch to choose from.

Ours costs around $22 per month. When you sign up with them, they give you a big trash can on wheels. You can only put bagged trash in them, but there aren't any rules about what kids of bags you can use--we just use regular Glad 13 gallon bags and throw a bunch of them in there. We also have a small recycling container, which a different truck picks up. For that you just put the recyclables in there (not in a bag), and they sort it. They give you a detailed sheet showing what can be recycled and what can't.

They won't pick up big stuff like furniture, but fortunately they are flexible if you have a little bit of extra trash now and again sitting by the large can. That happened to us several times when we were unpacking and moving in, but they luckily always took it for us.

The village provides each household with a large, rolling yardwaste container and a large rolling trash container. They also provide blue bags for recycling glass, plastics, and metal. You have to bundle paper and cardboard yourself. All are picked up on Wednesday mornings by three different trucks. I pay quarterly and the cost is bundled with my water and sewer bill and averages about $20/month.

Wow, what an amazing hassle.

Here, the town provides you with two (large) rolling barrels. One for garbage, one for recycling. The recycling is quite encompassing and everything can be thrown in together, loose. The garbage needs to be bagged (however you want), but you can put loose LARGE items in there as well.

The pick up is once a week. The two bins are supposed to be at the end of your driveway, no less than 4 feet apart.

There are two trucks, one for trash and one for recyclables. They are the trucks that are automated --they send out a pick up arm that lifts the barrel and upends it into the truck, then sets it back down again (usually on its side in the middle of your driveway, so you can't get in when you get home).

I would gladly bring our trash to a city dump. We no longer have one though.

Oh, don't be envious. You either have to take off from work to go or spend a hour on Saturdays waiting in line to get to the dump, because the hours of operation stink.

If you don't have a truck, you have to load your garbage into your car.

If you want to buy tickets to dump your bags, you have to take off more time from work to go to the municipal building to purchase them.

Boy do I consider myself lucky. I buy my own cans or bags and take them to the curb. The city gives us recycling bins and there's no sorting. My trash day is Tuesday and there is no limit on what we throw out. If there is a bulk item like a dishwasher the supervisor calls in that truck. My new neighbors have even been taking it to the curb for me when my DH is out of town because I have a bad back.

Pick-up is included in property taxes. Nice thing is that they remove everything from your back yard or wherever you designate.
