How does tipping work

Hi all,

Should you travel on the Wonder and be served by a smiling, cherubic-faced young lady named Cheryl, you should immediately quadrupal your tips. :D

She is my daughter who traveled all the way from South Africa to ensure you enjoy your cruise and started on the Wonder this week.

We're cruising Sept 2 on the Wonder ... wouldn't it be neat if your Cheryl is assigned to our table as I'm also a Cheryl!

Thank you for a great Link for the tip calculator.

ok so is palo extra does it costs moneyu to eat there i thought everything was included as far as food goes, so the only people wo get cash are the ones you get envelopes for other crew members cannot get cash , but we can give them a phone or walmart gift card, and for the ones who have the envelopes, we can slip in a gift card as an added dbonus?

Hi everyone,

There is something i don't understand I am from the Netherlands and booked directly with Disney. They told me that tipping is included in my price and when I recieved my confirmation it was on there so I guess that I have already paid for tippiing. Is there anyone that has had this too?????

Thanks Ciska :earseek: :earboy2:

if you chose to add on your tips before your cruise you can or you can do it during the cruise

Yes. DCL passengers who booked in the UK have also reported that their DCL vacation package include all onboard gratuities. So, in Europe, the DCL packages seem to include tips.

But that's not the case in the USA, whether booking through DCL, through DVC (except perhaps for the DVC member cruise), or through a travel agency like DU. As I posted earlier in this thread, for 4 passengers on a 7-night cruise, it works out to a grand total of $305 for all four main tipped positions, if you follow the guidelines exactly.

Re. the 15% tip added to drinks, Am I to understand that if I have a drink brought to me one day by the pool, I just sign the slip of paper and don't have to tip the person who brings it me? This is my first cruise also and it is nice to see that I am not the only one who doesn't completely understand the tipping process!!! Have a great trip everyone!

Yes, that is right. It will be added to your bill automatically. Also to the person who asked about Palo's $10 charge. This is a per person fee. It covers the seating charge but does not all go to your server as a tip. We tip as if we were actually paying for the meal. By the time Sasha brought us the extra appetizers and deserts, with no alcohol, I am sure that we would have paid over $100 in a 5 star location.

Wonder if anyone has ever slipped the Captain a tip.
The captain cannot and will not accept a tip from a passenger. I don't think it's against the law, but it's close to it.

I think it is more a matter that the Captain would consider it an insult.

While it may be the standard practice to tip because everyone else is doing it,
I still find it a sad state of afairs that all these people expect to be tipped.

I am not against tipping for great service, but just because someone is doing the job they were hired for. I find problems with that.

Sorry but I quess I am old fashioned in my thinking.

Yes, "all these people expect to be tipped" -- just as you and I expect to be paid by our employers. On a cruise ship, we -- the passengers -- are effectively the employers of the people who serve food to us and who take care of our staterooms.

Keep in mind that the people who serve you on most cruise ships are being paid around $50 per month to work 7 days a week, from early in the morning until late at night (with a few hours off here and there during times when not many people are eating). These cruise line employees are often supporting families back home, who require food, shelter, clothing, and education.

Your cruise fare does not include the services of the people who serve food to you and who take care of your stateroom. That's not how the cruise lines put it, but that's really how it is. For those services, you pay "suggested" gratuities. For the "great service," you tip above the suggested amounts.

Sure, the cruise lines could raise their rates by about $11 per passenger per day and institute a "no tipping required" policy. But chances are service would suffer because the incentive to provide outstanding service would be reduced.

The current system works -- for the cruise lines (who don't have to include these labor-intensive services in their cost structure) and for the passengers (who usually get outstanding service). And it works for the tipped crew members, as long as guests understand the system.

I tend to order a few drinks on the plane on my way to vacation. Does anyone tip the flight attendant?

We are also from UK and understood originally that all service charges were included in our price. Think this is because that is how things are usually in this country. Wonder how we find out before we go if this has been done as would hate to not tip and then find out it was not included. Bit of a dilemma I think.

There have been several reports on this board from folks in the UK and other countries in Europe who purchased Disney Cruise packages that include all gratuities.

I assume you'll get vouchers (either with your cruise documents or on the ship) that you can put into the gratuity envelopes -- but I don't recall ever reading this. Perhaps another guest who purchased a Disney Cruise in the UK can give you a better answer. In any case, you may wish to contact your travel agency for clarification.

Of course, if you get outstanding service, you may wish to consider adding some extra cash into one or more envelopes.

I appreciate your sentiments and we thoroughly agree and do not think that a set amount should be advised for tipping. We have worked hard all our lives and never received a tip for anything.

I wonder why it seems to be that all cruises set a minumum tip amount for their staff. We are always at a loss to know just how much to tip and know that the car we are using to get us to the terminal will expect us to tip the driver but have no idea how much that should be.

Limo driver's usually expect 15-20% of the cost of the ride as a tip....but it is at your descretion...if you felt the driver was just Ok, don't tip as much, if he was extremely helpful, tip him what you want.

It still is you who will control how much tip to give.

Hi there,

On our last cruise , my two kids only ate with us 2 nights on a 7 day cruise. They were having so much fun in the kid's club with all their new friends that my husband and I took the oppurtunity to enjoy some adult time together. What should you do if it is only the two of you for dinner from a family of 4. Do you still tip the waiters and managers for serving 4 if only 2 of you are there? We did do this on our last cruise, but somehow thought that it wasn't quite equal considering all the time the kid's were with the kid's club staff. We are from Canada so, for the kid's club staff phone cards and gift cards are not things we would be able to get before we get on board? Any other suggestions?

Thanks for any info,
:flower:
