How Does This Work?

Hi everybody... we just returned from our first Disney vacation. We had a blast, and as seems to happen so often... we are hooked!

Midway through our stay, we met with a DVC rep, and although we'd LOVE to join... it's not fiscally possible for us at the moment. Upon returning, I saw this section of the forums on the DIS. I didn't know you could rent points from others... and I'm not 100% sure on how it works, so I figured I'll post and ask. If anybody can help out, I'd greatly appreciate it.

My questions are:

1 - How does this work? Do you have to be a DVC member to rent points from other members... or can my family rent from any DVC member who has points to rent out?

2 - If we can, and we choose to rent points... how does the reservation work? Does it get made in OUR name or the name of the DVC member?

3 - Payment... When booking through Disney directly, there is obviously the whole 45 day window deal. How about here? Are members flexible... or is it pretty standard that points are paid for up front?

Thanks for any help you can provide. We'd LOVE to visit Disney again... and we're looking for more cost-effective ways to do so... and this appears to be a good way to go.

1- anyone can rent a reservation from a DVC owner.
2- it is made in your name as a guest BUT the DVC owner continues to own the reservation until you check in.
3- payment - you are dealing with an individual - disney is not involved at all - so it varies widely, but owners tend to require much earlier payment than disney

Some DVC members rent out their points. I think the price is typically about 10 dollars per point. I'm sure most expect the money up front. The DVC member would then make the reservation for you. It will be made in your name though.

I don't have much experience with this personally, but this is basically how it works.
