How does this work? Point question.

I'm still researching DVC and at the point of deciding how many points I'll need. In working with the point calculators, I get points that come up, for ex: 202pts, 178pts, etc. If I had 200 points and needed those extra 2 points, would I rent two points? How does that work?

The same goes for larger amount of points too. I think most of the time it would be just myself and my DGD or myself and my DF going so a studio, (maybe a 1BR with DF;) ) would work most of the time for our stays. However, if I decided to take the whole flam damly and needed a 2BR, could I rent the remainder of the points I needed to add with the points I already own?

TIA

You could borrow those two points from your next year! Have you seen the charts for how many points you will need? 200 points should be a good place to start and should be plenty to work with.

I personally recommend buying somewhat more than you think you actually need; also note that you can buy from Disney any amount of points, like 202, rather than just round numbers (charts Disney gives you show round numbers in tens but they are for demonstration purposes only). You could possibly rent additional points you need but then you cannot assume they will always be available. Also, typical rental is where a member rents by making the ressie for the guest in the guest's name. The member does not actually transfer any points to another member's account. When you need only a small number of points to fill a day you are likely looking at an actual transfer of points from one member to another, which can be done but because there are some retrictions on actual transfers of points, members who may otherwise be willing to do a typical rental may be reluctant to do a deal that involves actual point transfer.

Ooooohhh, okay, borrow the points from the next year. Isn't it a bad thing to be forever borrowing though? Yes, I've been playing with the point calculator and I have the chart too. I'm thinking either 150 or 200 points. I think I'll be able to pay cash for 150pts, but I'd have to finance a bit if I went 200. I'd sure like BCV for the location and SAB for my DGD!:teeth:

If a likely scenario comes out to 202, just buy 202 (rather than 200)!
I bought 155 because that was a typical scenario for us.

On the other hand, if you have 200 and need 202, the sensible thing to do is just borrow 2 points from the next years allocation. Yes, it's terrible! It means you'll have to skip a vacation once every hundred years. ;)

There's any number of combinations you could come up with.

One thought is if your accommodation would typically be 202 points every year, you might buy a 152 point contract. this would allow you to have a 202 point vacation each year for 3 years out of every 4 years total.

I'd suggest you purchase whatever you're most comfortable with financially. Then use the points as you see fit.

What looks like a typical 202 point vacation today can change very quickly as you decide you want to go to different resorts, or change room types. That's the beauty of DVC....the total flexibility of the point system: Spend them anyway you want.

Bank and borrow. It works the other way to (if you can avoid spending all your points). You need 202 points this year, you own 200, borrow 2. You have 198 points for next year, but decide to stay in a studio instead of the one bedroom you had last year, so its only 175 points, and you bank 23. Now you have 223 for the next year. Your plans call for two shorter trips, using 230 points, borrow 7, down to 193 for the following year, but this time you decide to take relatives need 300 points and borrow 107, leaving you a mere 93 points for the following year. You decide to pay cash for a cruise, or cash for a stay at the Poly (you've missed it anyway), or even skip Disney and take a tour of Europe (cash), and bank all 93 of those points, having 293 for the next year....and so on for the next several decades.

Thanks for all the help everyone. It's really so simple when you say it!:D I'm getting sooo excited!
