How does this ADR cancellation thing work?

I see threads for cancellations of ADRs with I assume people wanting to pick up the cancellations, How is that possible?
I mean saying, " I am calling to cancel at 7 p.m. doesn't really help that much does it?
How does it work?

Yep, all you do is call and say your canceling your ADR. They'll ask you for the confirmation number. Pretty simple.

I think what the OP is asking is why people post on the threads that they are cancelling an ADR - is there are way we can give an ADR we don't want to a DISer that wants it? I would like to know also. Don't want to do anything that's "wrong" - but is this what everyone is doing?

If you post the date, time, restaurant and # in your party of the ADR and say I'm going to canx on 11/05 at 12:00pm, I can call a few minutes later and hopefully pick it up. There are MANY people on the phones making ADR's at any one time though so I may still not get it, but my chances are pretty good.

I believe you can also call and transfer a resservation to another person, give their name, phone, and such, and the ressie goes to them.

I tried to do that and the CM said that unless the other party was on the phone as well, she couldn't do it. I asked my TA about it as well and she said she could try to do it internally, but it would be easier just to give the other person's name when we check in. So I guess that's what we're doing, though I feel weird about doing it.

The best thing to do is just to cancel it as soon as you can, that way the ADR is available to the next person that needs it. Diser or not, your holdling up and ADR.

I just did this: had an ADR I didn't want; posted on the boards the what, when and where; asked if anyone wanted it. Got a pm from a fellow DISer that was interested. She gave me her name,phone #, and number of children in her party. I called DisneyDining and the CM had no problem switching the ADR to her name.

You could also just call and cancel so the spot is open; but I figured I'd post it on the boards to help out a fellow DISer - and I'm glad I did!

Someone did this for us in September, called in and gave our name. It worked great and was a real gift to us!

Yep, people that want to get more involved, will try to actually change the ressie for others.

Other will just post, as stated, that
"I'm canceling a CRT breakfast for Sept 20th, 8:05, party of 4. I'll be calling Aug 15th at 10am eastern to cancel" and let folks see that and others that could use that time would be dialing shortly after 10am.

Others still will just cancel and not post anything, just let it go back in the system.
