How does the dining plan work exactly?

Ok...I have booked my trip for the beginning of September for four night with the dining plan. My question is....how does it work when you sit down to order your food? Do you tell the waitor you are on the dining plan? And also....can you order any entree...any dessert... any appetizer, or are there price limits? Also tipping....for those who tip a little something extra: How much do your tip...and do you tip in cash? Obviously I'm guessing they debit your meals from your room key that has the information on it.

Any and all answers would be appreciated! I'm so excited to go...but I just want to be sure I'm prepared! I've heard alot of good things about the dining plan...and I am looking forward to it!

You are right on the card, they give you a card upon check in with all your meals on it. When you sit down, tell the server right away that you are using the dining plan so that they know how to charge the food right from the beginning. As far as tipping, Disney tips all servers 15-18% of the total food bill directly to their payroll. Having worked in the hospitality industry I can tell you the servers would probably love to have additional cash tips instead of waiting until their paycheck, but the dining plan specifically states that tips & taxes are included. If the plan includes tip & tax, I will not be tipping anything additional unless supreme service warranted it. I do not want to sound cheap, but the whole reason I am going to WDW is to take advantage of the free dining plan, and since the servers are getting paid from someone, I feel fine not tipping any more. That is my personal opinion, I guess it's really up to you. Have fun!

Disney Dining Plan
Experience over 100 selected Walt Disney World® restaurants including our legendary Disney Character Dining. For each night on your package, you enjoy:
1 table-service meal including appetizer, entree, dessert, and nonalcoholic beverage and gratuity charge
1 counter-service meal including entree, dessert and nonalcoholic beverage at select counter-service locations
1 snack, such as a frozen ice cream bar, box of popcorn, 20 oz bottle of Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite, Dasani water or a medium fountain soft drink at select snack cart locations
As an added benefit, you may exchange 2 table-service meals for either 1 Signature Dining Experience at one of our finest restaurants, such as the acclaimed California Grill or for 1 Disney Dinner Show, such as Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue.
Children age 3-9 must order from the Children's Menu if available.

Here is the link to the brochure from Disney about the package. It has the most current list of restaurants on the plan.

:flower: Now, for some of the more common questions about the plan. :flower:

How much does the plan cost?
It is $35 for adults and $10 for children 3-9 years old. This is the cost per night of stay.

Do I have to stay onsite?
Yes, you must be staying at a Disney hotel and book a package.

Is this the same as the DDE card I keep reading about?
No, it is not the same thing. The Disney Dining Experience card gives you a 20% discount at most Table Service restaurants.
Here is a great thread that explains DDE: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=819460

How many credits do I get?
The number of credits you receive is based on the number of nights you are staying at the resort. You must at least purchase a basic one day ticket, but you do not have to purchase a ticket that matches the number of nights you are staying.

Can I still get my AP or other discounts?
As of today, you must pay rack rate for the room, unless you book your entire package with AAA. There have been some reports of people getting to use their pin codes (not public ones) and add the dining plan. If you are unsure, call Disney directly and ask.

Can I share meals?
Yes, you can share the meals unless they are from a buffet or all you can eat.

Can I pay for my child’s meal and save his/her TS/CS credits for another day?
Yes, you can. You will be given a separate ticket with tax. You will need to tip for this ticket as it is not figured into what the server will be tipped from the dining plan.

Why would you want to do this? (Question from another poster)

Is the tip really included? What percent do they give the server? Can I tip more?
Yes, the tip and tax are included. It has been reported that the server receives 15% at most restaurants and 18% at a few. They receive the tip on the total of the bill, so they are willing to show you how to best use the plan because it increases their tip. And yes, you can tip your server additional $$$ and may be a great thing to do for wonderful service.

Is the package a good deal?
The answer to this question depends on you and your family. You need to determine how much you save doing your trip with and without the plan. For some, it is a better deal to get the discounts, but for others, the food expense is greater than the amount saved. You need to review the list of participating restaurants and try to set up a sample meal plan for your trip. Make sure to include all your snacks, drinks, tax and tip. Try to compare apples to apples. Make out your list showing where you would eat if on the plan. Then compare where you would eat if not on the plan, but were still able to eat what you wanted. Then compare that with how you would eat if Disney did not have this plan at all.

Does my child still get an appetizer and dessert if they order from the child’s menu?
Yes they do. If there is not one on the kid’s menu, they can order from the adult’s menu. This was told to me by two different CM's when I called and has also been reported on the boards by numerous people.

What if I go offsite for the day, do I loose my credits?
No you do not loose them. They are for the entire trip. You could, in theory, save all your snack credits and use them on your last day.

Is there a special menu we must order from?
No, you order from the regular restaurant menu.

Isn’t this a lot of food? Is it still cost effective if we do not order/eat the appetizer or dessert?
Each family needs to determine if it is cost effective for them. You do not have to order the appetizer or dessert. If you are too full, then don’t. Many families have reported that they ordered a dessert they could take with them to the park, such as a muffins or cookies.

Doesn’t this plan force me to stick to a schedule?
You can look at it that way, but others like knowing that they have a reservation made at a certain restaurant for a certain time. You can always call and cancel the reservation when you are on site and change your mind.

If I order my meal, but do not get dessert, can I order it later?
No. Once your ticket has been processed, you loose that credit. --updated-- It has been reported that some people have had their ticket stamped that allowed them to return to the restaurant later for their dessert. I am not sure if this is the norm, or just an isolated case. I will update this as we learn more.

Do I have to make Priority Seating arrangements for all my Table Service meals?
No you do not HAVE to, but for many/most of the restaurants it is a good idea. If you have your heart set on eating at a special place, make the reservation so you know you have a spot. You can walk up the day you are in the park and put yourself on the walkup list, but you may have a long wait. You also do not have to tell them you are on the dining plan when you make the reservation.

Does the family have to eat together, or can we split up?
The way I understand it, the credits are put on all the cards, so you can split up and eat. They are subtracted the same way as if you were all eating together. So, Mom and daughter can go to one place, and Dad and son can head to another and eat at the same time. Or the kids can ditch the parents and eat what they want.

Here is a link for those who want help with the planning of their meals (thanks Robinb)

Hopefully this will help to answer some of the questions that keep popping up about the plan. As with anything, you will need to determine if it is the best choice for you and your family. Have a great time planning :wizard:

We used it last week and I made sure I told each CM whether it was counter or table service or even a snack that I had the dining plan. They were real helpful in explaining what we could get. Basically we could order anything. We really enjoyed using the plan and ate over $900 worth of food for about $600. Not a bad deal. Plus we enjoyed knowing we had already paid for the food and did not have to carry around extra cash. As for the tips,at the table service we put an extra $5 towards the tip.

One piece of information. They will show you the bill with the total and then you sign a receipt. The copy you get back will be with 0's. I always remember to write the amount on my copy so I knew how much everything was. I got this tip was someone else on the board before my trip and it was a great help in figuring everything out in the end.

Hope you enjoy it as much as we did. :)

We always use some form of a dining plan, most recently the Premium Plan. Your room key/park ticket holds the "vouchers" for your meals. All meals for everyone on the plan will be there.

When you make Advanced Dining Reservations, tell them you are on the dining plan. It sometimes causes you to get better seating. When you sit down, tell the waitress as well. Each person on the plan is allowed one non-alcoholic beverage, appetizer, entree, and dessert. So, if you have 5 people, that equals five appetizers, entrees, etc. You really can enjoy a lot of different things in this way. GET READY TO EAT! lol! :mickeybar

Tipping is included and the amount is generous. You do not need to pay anything out of pocket. After your meal, they will bring you a receipt that has the total of your meal in dollars. Sign it, give them your room key/park ticket saying you want to use the dining plan to pay, and they will return with a new receipt. This one says you owe $0.00! :) The meal will automatically be deducted from the amount of meals you all have. They will give a grand total of what is left on the bottom of this receipt. Enjoy!

How does handing your card to the cashier work if there are two people? Do you hand in both cards so they can deduct off from both?

Also I have read where they deduct the wrong number of credits so keep an eye on that when you get your receipt. It will be a lot easier to correct it then and there rather than catching it later and tring to find someone to help.

To ckret01, you need to hand just one card to the server. The bottom of the receipt indicates how many credits you have left so that helps to know where you stand.

Okay, another question.

We have a party of 5 in two rooms. There are two adults in one room and one adult and 2 children in the other. Will our meals all be pooled or will they be divided by room?

We will have a party of 10 (7 adults, 1 "junior" and 2 kids) in three rooms. We'll all have dinner together at night, are we going to have to worry with handing the server three different cards?

Can someone please tell me what your receive for breakfast if you use a Counter Service credit?

I am not sure if they will make you use 3 cards or not. You can alway ask them at check in if all can be associated with one card. Hopefully they will be glad to help you out. :cool1: :cool1:

Well, I called Grand Gatherings, and had to educate the CM completely. She very earnestly explained to me that *each* person would have only their meal credits on their key (including the 3-year-old). When I told her, also very earnestly, that she was wrong...and then explained what my question was once again, she put me on hold and went to Guest Relations. When she came back, she apologized several times but told me that since each villa is on a separate reservation number, we WILL have to present three room keys when we all have dinner together.

I'm sorry! This is probably a silly question, but here goes!
We are staying 7 nights/8days...Do we get the meal plan for the 8th day as well? I remember that is how the Length of Stay tickets worked. They were good until 12 mid of the day that you checked out... We aren't getting picked up until early evening, so I was curious...
Thanks!

Yes, you can use the meal plan until midnight of the last day you are there. In your case, you will have 7 TS, 7 CS, and 7 snacks to use until midnight of the day you check out.

:teeth: Thanks. I wasn't sure if we would need to pay out of pocket for one of the days or if it was like the old LOS passes that were good from the moment you checked in until 12 mid of the day you checked out (8 days)...
