How does everyone get so much time off?!

Wow! My mom is very smart and works for a large company as a Revenue Recognition Analyst. She works SO much and yet she gets maybe 5 days of vacation a year tops. I don't understand it :confused3

Most companies, I thought, that were big professional type of comapnies gave people 2 weeks to start and then you earned more from there based on lenght of service.

I've been a my company for 13 years....I currently get 4 weeks and 2 personal choice days.

I work in Insurance but am owned by a Bank so we are required (banking rules) to take 2 weeks at a time off. They started this actually this year but I had to get a waiver as I already had my 2 vacations booked. I need one now - next year will be long as I won't have vacation till the end of July. It has been a long year already and it was 6 months ago my vacation. I will get 3 weeks in 2 years and I get 10 personal days to use as I want.

I don't work outside the home, but my dh has been on his job for 23 years and now has 4 weeks paid vacation, he also is on the " use it or lose it " type of job so he can take no more than 2 weeks at a time and he does.

That's what I thought too! But they only give her a few days for each holiday per year. She gets Easter off, the 4th of July (she didn't last year but she does at her new company), I think two days for Thanksgiving then Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. I don't get it because she works so hard. It's really not fair. I wish we could take a longer trip!

I am a building suprvisor, in a school. I get 28days hols plus the usual ones easter christmas etc. plus any hours i work i can take them as time off . All have to be took during school holidays.
I have been going for 3 weeks the last few years, but decided with the price of airfares to try 4 weeks next July.

My dh get 6 weeks per year, plus 2 weeks floating/personal/sick time. He is a professional, no union... works for a large internet search engine. He started at 4 weeks + 2 floating. Now is at 6 after being their 5 years. He'll cap at 8+2. he stops accruing time off when he's got more than 8+2 right now so he has to use his time.

The trick is being able to actually take the time off that he's granted. In 2005 he took off 3 consecutive weeks for a Disney trip (cruise/WDW) but he pulled overtime a month before and a month after so that things would be okay while he was gone. Last year he took 3 weeks off while we went to Italy and from there to Ethiopia to adopt our son. He kept getting voicemails and ended working part of the time in Ethiopia from our hotel before we took custody of our son. It wasn't a big deal because it was pouring rain and our kids were all napping, but he should have been able to rest to (needed it with everything going on).

He does take 2 full weeks off for every Christmas. Thats no problem due to how many people take time then, he never gets bothered.

Most of his days are used just taking a day here or there to be home for kids birthdays, field trips, etc.

DH works for a financial services company, has been there for 16 years, and gets at least 6 weeks vacation, not including personal and sick time. However, he never uses it all!

My old job I had been there almost 17 years and had accrued 3 weeks vacation and 3 personal days (personal days never increase). To get another week of vacation I would have had to have been there 20 years. We were able to take as much time in a row as needed but full timers could not take any time off from december 12th through january 1st.

My new job I got 18 days as soon as I started. Not sure if there is a limit on how many weeks in a row because I don't think we'd ever go on a 2 week vacation. DH gets 4 weeks but rarely takes even 1 or 2 full weeks, he can roll over 1 week but he used to just cash in his unused weeks. Since the owner died and there is another family member running things we're not sure that will happen this year.

My longest WDW world trip was 9 days and that was a while back and DH complained that he was away from work too long and never would go for that amount of time again.

We are self-employed and can do most of our work via laptop, cell. So we can be away but must work occasionally while we are on vacation.

Besides federal or state labor law there really is no "fair" in the workplace. It sounds like you are seeing an important lesson that people work for a "compensation package" and not an hourly wage. Finding out (and negociating) benefits is one of the most important steps when weighing where to work.

For me personally at one hospital for anything over 2 weeks off, you had to take a LOA! My current hospital allows up to 6 weeks off (if you have the PTO). I did one of those last summer.

I guess next time she'll just have to take a closer look at vacation time. She's used to working so much that she thinks it's normal. I have to convince that she needs some time off!

I agree. My husband has always negiotiated paid time off as part of his compensation package. At his current job this is standard. But his past jobs it was similiar for him because he negiotiated it.

good luck :)

I might sound a little frustrated since I am often competing for nurses etc....who can't see the value of our excellent benefits and accept a job somewhere else for another 1.50 an hour ! People need to be taught some life skills in school.

oops you were too quick T&S mom!

I have been with the same company for 12 years and get 6 weeks of vacation per year. I never take that much so I usually have a bunch built up.

DH owns his own business, as do my parents so if it were not for college (DS) high school (DD) and money(or lack thereof lol) we would be able to spend as long as we wanted...darn college, school and money!! :goodvibes

She does get healthcare through her work which is really the most important thing. At least she has a good paying job and we have a place to live and food to eat. I just feel bad because she works so hard. I wish she could take a break sometimes.

:rotfl: I just want to run away to the Bahamas or something where I don't have any responsibilities!

I have 3 weeks of vacation. I always go to Disney for 9 days (1 week and 2 weekends). The majority of the cost is the transportation there, so I want to stay as long as I can. Before I had 3 weeks, I always took vacation during a week with a holiday in it -- therefore saving 1 day of vacation. We have averaged 2 trips a year to Disney since 1990. I always have another trip in the planning stages. But, with the economy the way that it is, the trip we are taking the first week of December is the last one I have planned. I work in the accounting department of a homebuilder and there will be no bonus and no raises -- so my funds are running low.

My last job I had 5 weeks of vacation. Now I'm PT, so I just pretty much vacation when I want....I don't get paid for them, but I have flexibility.

I probably took about 8-10 weeks of vacation last year.

DH has 4 weeks, plus some floating days.
