How does everyone feel about flying?

I was just wondering if anyone was considering changing their plans and driving instead of flying after this morning's news reports? I am torn and quite honestly am considering driving but I can't help but feel that we'll be just fine flying. I don't know- I hate that we even have to think of these things. Anyway- I was just wondering what everyone else thought. :surfweb:

I don't know how anyone couldn't be a little nervous with the state things are in now, but no, I'm not changing my plans. We'll be flying in Nov., and honestly I know it will be on my mind, but I'm not changing our plans.

We live too far to drive, so we'll be flying. Not saying the news this morning wasn't unsettling but we definitely won't let any of this stop us from living our lives.

I'm very concerned. The thought that keeps running through my mind is I'm taking my 3 kids on the plane. They have no idea the risks involved (I don't plan on telling them - let them remain innocent a little longer) and I keep thinking would they want to be on that plane considering the circumstances. I wonder what decision they'd make.

Then I keep thinking is it worth our lives to go on vacation? We live in Maine and theres other places we could be going. To be honest I've never been a good flyer. Pre 9/11 I was always worried about safety/maintenance problems and now we have to worry about a bunch of idiots blowing things up. Quite frankly it makes me po'ed. If I back out they win but my family is safe (for now). I guess we need to go w/the odds - this is what my husband says. Its really sad we have to think of these things.

Not sure what we'll do - we don't go till 5/07. Good luck w/everyone's trip and decisions.

With what going on in the news today, (liquid bombs) you can't help being nervous about getting on a plane. What are they going to come up next to hijack a plane?

I was never a good flyer..since 9-11 im REALLY bad! I am really nervous and hate the fact that we have to live in fear like this.
My Dh and i are taking a small trip this Sat, and i am so afraid to leave my children. Then we are all flying to WDW on the 22nd...im not going to change my plans, although i am scared, i am going to go on with my life and the plans we have made...i REFUSE to let them win. Good Luck and God Bless....

Hi
Yes, my DD and I talked about driving down from Philly. My DH and I drove to WDW when our children were younger and it was the drive from ----. I said never again. This year my 3 1/2 DGD will be with us. I thought I could hook up the DVD player in the car for her. I really don't want to drive and will make a final decision before next week. It's just so much better to be there in 2 1/2 hours, and I remember that long drive. I imagine most people will still fly, and as of now I'm leaning that way. I'll have to see what my DD wants to do.

You could consider the auto train.....if I lived in the Northeast, I sure would. Our two trips on it have been great!

I'm not really worried. Really, it's no more dangerous today than it was yesterday, it's just that we know more today. It's a chance you take any time you get in the air. But statistically you have a far greater chance of being injured or killed on the highways, so you make the choice. And there is no way I'm driving with a 4 year old from NY to FL.

I get anxiety flying and after the news, I am considering driving. My husband I have always driven to WDW, but thought flying would be easier now that we have a baby.

Hi
I think you're right. I always hear it's safer to fly than drive. I don't like to fly so I get a little help from Xanax when I do. I feel the same way about flying with my DGD 3 1/2. I don't have the patience I had when I was younger, so I don't know if I could last that long in the car. Someone suggested the Auto Train and my friend took that before, but that's too long to sit on a train. If we did drive, we could take our time and maybe stop to see a few things along the way.

We are still kicking it around, fly vs. drive. We've come up with a back up plan.

Right now, all flight ressies stay intact, we won't do anything. Just watch the news for the next few weeks and see how this plays out and how the new security measures change/stay where they are.

BUT we also went ahead and reserved a room at a hotel just outside of FL so if we decide to drive we already have a hotel to stop at and rest. We figure if we drive through the night, the kiddos will sleep (they will, car in motion = comas) and then by the time they wake up we will be ready for a breakfast break and onto the hotel. Spend the rest of the day at the hotel resting and letting the kids burn off their energy, go to bed early and get up and finish the last leg of our trip. We will also have the car dvd player.

I figure we will make a final decision about a week before the actual trip at the end of Sept. And maybe by then I can convince myself that we will all be ok flying. But I can assure you, I will be closely scrutinizing ANYONE on that plane!

It sucks that it has to be this way. It really does.

we were talking about this tonight at work. We're still flying when we go (in 51 days   ). I think security is going to be so tight that it will actually ease my mind. I'll take that extra hour or two at the airport and a much lighter carry on bag for the peace of mind that they're checking everything.

We leave in less than two weeks with four small children and I actually feel safer now....I know people are against Full Body Scans, but I think its come time for them. If people dont like them, they can travel some other way. I like that security is tighter today than yesterday. It will be a major pain for some, and me with the kids and stuff, but I feel better. I was actually more worried when they started letting people take nail clippers and small box knives back on the planes! HELLO, did we not learn!! :confused3

People are going to be more on guard now, and its shook up the terrorist networking. I just cant wait to get to Disney and finally have some fun. I actually have more concerns living in Seattle with the North Korea thing, and Bird Flu than I do with airplanes.

I agree that flying is still safer than driving. I do get a little nervous about flying, but not so much so that I wouldn't do it. If we all stopped flying, the terrorists would win! They want to hurt our economy and make us scared! I refuse to let that happen! We also live a little far to drive(in Indiana) so I prefer to get there faster by flying. :sunny:

We are flying to WDW in 3 days. I've always been a nervous flyer but I actually feel safer because of the security precautions they're taking.
Had to sit down with DD's (13 and 15) yesterday (purse contents dumped on the table) explaining to them why they can't take their lip gloss and gels on the plane. Wasn't sure how they'd respond. They understood and last night were packing and singing without a care in the world.
I love what just the thought of going to Disney does for my family! :sunny:

So true! :furious: I'm thinking that they'll ban ALL carryons at some point because of these threats. Can't carry on anything but your body and the clothes on your back. The airlines will then have to sell you everything you could possibly need onboard.
