I have been reading up in anticipation of our much, much needed DCL vacation. The information is clear on US customs in terms of alcohol, $ limits etc. What I don't know is how these limits apply to Canadians returning to Florida from a Caribbean cruise. Do we have the same limits as the Americans when we go through US customs when we disembark? Do we have to pay US duty and then Canadian duty again when we fly home?

I took a Caribbean cruise prior to my US vacation last April and was waved through American customs. I paid the customs charges upon my return to Canada a month later. American customs only collect duties from Americans. The goods you purchase willl not be remaining in the States therefore they are not interested in them.

I was trying to remember what we did too. We did not pay duty but we didn't go over either.

When you go though customs you are all Canadian. And you have to be up really early on departure day. All your family has to be there too. If you have kids let them go in there p.j.'s a lot do. If you are going to St Thomas you will have to get up early that morning too since the ship is back in the U.S then.

You will have a blast. We have been three times.

Your travel agent gave us the best advise. If you are not rushing for a plane home. Don't rush off the boat. Enjoy your breakfeast, stroll the decks one last time. We went up and played basketball ... Yes you do have to get off the boat but as you will see there is a ton of people in the lobby waiting for them to open the doors to leave the boat, why get trampled.

We didn't pay duty until we arrived back in Canada. Waved us right through. Although they did ask about Cuban cigars?? We didn't go to Cuba but maybe they were on sale in Nassau. Nothing from Cuba, we were told.
