How does a February UY work?

I put in an offer for a DVC contract with a Feb. use year. I'm wondering how ressies work. For example, I have an 11 month book ahead window for my home resort. So...if I want to stay at my home (BLT) in January, can I use the previous year's points? Or, do my 2010 points have to be used in 2010, or would I have to bank them for a January 2011 trip?

I've asked the broker I dealt with and he informed me the UY doesn't really matter for reasons I didn't fully understand.

Thanks for your responses.

Match your vacation dates to the use year to determine which points to use.

For example, a January 2011 vacation falls within your 2010 use year (which is for vacations between 2/1/2010 and 1/31/2011). For the January 2011 vacation you could use current use year points (from 2010 use year), any points you banked from 2009 or you could borrow points from your 2011 use year.

You could make the reservation 11 months prior to arrival (call in February 2010) for your home resort or 7 months prior (call in June 2010) if you want to stay at a non-home resort.

Use year has no bearing on when you can call to make the reservation. Those rules are the same for all use years. Points for all use years are already in your account.

Take a look at the tutorial for more help in understanding use year and reservations:

Understanding Use Year

Good luck with your offer.

Use year has nothing to do with when you can make reservations. January 2011 is still in your 2010 use-year. For stays in that month, you have three types of points that can be used... banked 2009 points, current 2010 points, or borrowed 2011 points.

(Like CarolMN said...)

AAAAwesome. I'm so excited (more so than before) and now can't wait to hear about the ROFR result. :yay:

The way that helps me remember what can be used is that I simply figure out which UY my trip will fall.

After I know that, I know that I can "pay" for it with banked points from the previous UY, current UY points of the trip, and borrowed points from the next UY.

As others have said, UY plays no role in when you book. It is 11 months ahead of check in at your home resort and 7 months ahead of check in for all others.

MS looks for points available at the time of travel, not the time of the call.

So, a Jan 2011 vacation would still be part of your 2010 UY and therefore can be paid for with banked 2009 points, 2010 points and borrowed 2011 points.

Just be sure you understand the drawbacks of traveling in the last month of your UY in terms of cancellation, especially when it comes to borrowed points.

We have a February UY and probably will never plan on traveling in January - LOL. However, I do like that I get my allotment of points near the beginning of each year so we can kind of plan how the year's trips are going to flow. Just remember that you have to bank any current points by September 30th and you'll be good to go. Good luck and welcome home! :goodvibes
