How do you work your schedule around FastPass?

I've read a lot about FastPass on allearsnet and in the Birnbaum guidebook. It sounds like a great idea for avoiding lines, but with a small child, and trying to maximize our enjoyment of our 3 days there, it also seems like our daily plan would have to work around the FastPass times. I know from experience with DS4 that the more rigid the schedule, the worse time everyone has. I would be grateful to hear your experiences with or without the FastPass option.

I have read this here and have done it myself...

Disney will accept a fastpass after the time of expiry as long as you use it the same day! They will not allow you to use it early, but they will let you use it hours after the fact...

Also, make sure you check the fastpass for the exact time you can get another fastpass - when we were there in March, it was usually only 45 minutes before we could get another fastpass! Sometimes Disney shakes things up and tries new strategies. Could be something they do during busy season...I don't know...
