Several of dd's dresses have white collars/accents of some sort & of course the label says to wash with "like colors' but I'm so afraid of throwing it in w/other reds - what do you do?

For the first time, I would wash it alone. Then after that I would wash with darks. I don't know if this is correct, but it's what I would do.

ETA: I would make sure to never wash it with any new item until the new item has been washed at least once.

I have a lot of clothes that I won't wash anything else with. Camisole tops, white sweatshirts (they'd pull fuzz from other whites) and sweaters. I just set the washer to an extra low load. That's probably how I'd wash the shirt all the time. I think the white wouldn't be so white at a later time if it was washed with darks.

I agree, keep the water set to cold so the red doesn't bleed. If it does, after rewashing it a few times, you'll probably be able to get the red out of the white area. I've had it happen on more than one occasion.

I'd also use color safe bleach for that load, if colors do bleed a little, it should help keep it from setting on the white collar (I think!).

Use Shout Color Catcher in the wash. It catches the color so it doesn't bleed onto others. I've never had a problem using this. I have a friend that doesn't even sort her laundry anymore by using it. I haven't gone that far.

Here's a trick that really works. It came from waaaayyy back in the 80's when I worked at Benetton. Remember those popular rugbys? Ya know the white ones with the stripe. Well they always ran. We used to instruct our customers to, before the first wash soak the garment in one cup of white vinegar in a sink full of cold water. Ya know it worked! It set the color. So now whenever I have something that has a white collar or anything that might really bleed, I do the white vinegar soak.
