We did something similar when DD14 was 11. My kids' grammar school ends in 6th grade, so a special trip became their birthday/graduation gift.
DD and I went to WDW for 5 days and it was great! We did the parks and spent time at the pool, but we also saw La Nouba and went to the Wishes Dessert Party. She also got to pick every restaurant and the DVC resort we stayed at. While we were gone, DH did some local stuff (zoo, going out to eat, etc) with the boys
Two years later, it was DS's turn. He wanted to go to WDW, but he's also a big Red Sox fan and wanted to see them play a spring training game. DH & DS went to WDW (DS got to pick resort). They went to AK (DS's favorite park) and did the Wild Africa Trek. The next day, they drove to the Clearwater area to catch the Red Sox game. They stayed overnight and caught another game the next day and then drove back to Orlando. DD, DS, & I flew down and met them at WDW that evening and the rest of the trip was a family trip (it was Easter).
Our youngest is only 7, so he has a few years to go before it's his turn, but he knows he'll get a special trip too.
