Do you put it on DVD? or CD?
I found some video on a computer that I saved to CD, but I want to put it on DVD. but the computer where the vid is does not burn DVD.

So I moved the file to this computer, and I thought it burned DVD but it wouldn't work.
do the dvd's have to have rw on them to copy to? ( did that make sense?)
I have a box of DVD-R

Based on what I've learned about recordable optical disc media, I would not rely on optical discs, CDs or DVDs, as the sole means of long-term storage for irreplaceable data. While I haven't followed my own advice, in this regard, yet, I think it is essential to consider redundant storage mechanisms. Just like it wouldn't be smart to store the negatives and the one and only set of prints for your treasured moments in one box in your home, it wouldn't be smart to store the copy of the digital data of your treasured moments in one box in your home. And beyond that, optical discs are less durable than magnetic tape.

A lot of folks talk up Carbonite. I suspect that we should all be using a service like that. If you have your own personal website, you may have enough storage (or perhaps unlimited?) to put everything up there, even if it isn't accessible to the public. Generally, hosting services back things up and so you're getting protection similar to, but not the same as, Carbonite.

I have heard of Carbonite, will have to look into that. I do use an external hard drive as well to save.
but the main reason I want to do dvd is so I can actually look at the video.

Okay that's a different story... Depending on where you want to loo at the video, it may not be as simple as mounting the DVD-R and copying the data to it. Specifically, if you want to view the video on a DVD player, you may need a tool like Nero Vision, to burn the DVD as a DVD video disc rather than a DVD data disc.

ok, that must be the problem , the disc is a DVD-R
so that must be a data disc.

are the DVD R/W video discs?

The disc isn't the (only) issue, but rather the software used to put the data onto the disc. If you're just mounting the disc and using your OS to copy data onto it, that's going to be just data. You need specific software to make a DVD video disc - i.e., one that will play in your DVD player. I use Nero Vision, for example. Most DVD-R discs can be used, along with Nero Vision, to make a DVD that will work in most DVD players.

Bicker thanks so much!
I istalled Nero and burned it as a video and it worked! I was able to then put it in the DVD player and view it !:thumbsup2
