How do you rent out points?

We're buying in with a June use year. We're probably going to want to do a small trip in May 2006, which won't quite use up our 2005 points, and then a big trip in late 2007. So... we may want to rent out our remaining 2005 points, since we won't be able to bank them for use in the 2007 use year.

How big a pain is this? How risky is this? Do you basically have someone sign a lease document? Do they send you a personal check and then you wait for it to clear before making the reservation?

It sounds much easier to transfer points to another DVCer. Are there a lot of DVCers looking to borrow points?

If you are buying now, and you are using most of your points for the May trip, you certainly can bank the remainder points to be used for your 2007 trip. You do that transaction when you book the May trip.

Are you sure? Because our first points will be June 2005 points... and I'm under the impression I couldn't bank those all the way into fall 2007.

June05 points may be banked into your 2006 Use Year- which allows them to be used for a reservation between June 1, 2006 and May 31, 2007. They could not be used for a trip later than May,2007.

You can get information about renting from the FAQ on the Rent/Trade Board. Basically, you are renting a reservation made using your points - not the points themselves. DVC does ask for a contract where your renters would agree to abide by all rules/regualtions of DVC and the resort. Many renters will feel more omfortable with a contract spelling out the details of dates, resort, room type, payment expectations and cancellation policy. There are some suggestions for rental contracts in this thread.
