how do you put a pic in your avatar?

Well, first you must have 10 posts to do it.

Then, hover over your username in the upper right of the page and click on "Avatar". You can download a picture from your computer there to create your avatar. One note, the picture size must be smaller than 1MB to work.

No problem. Also, once you have your 10 posts, it usually takes a while before the system recognizes that you've achieved that milestone. About 30-60 minutes.
