How do you pronounce Reykjavik?

How exciting!! I have never been myself...my grandmother was there last summer and didn't invite me to go along :sad2: .

She says it "rake" not "wreck"...maybe it can very by region (like an accent?)

BTW ~ my DD is going to Germany in February with her high school german class.....she is so excited!!

Hi I only speak a bit of Icelandic, but many of my family originate from Iceland or live there. The pronounciation in your original post is definitely not the closest to correct. Most North Americans say wreck-ya-vick or rake-ya-vick, both are fine. Tiziminchac has it right as well, it is just a bit difficult for most of us to pronounce it truly the same way as Icelanders do.
Interesting, the number of different responses to this one!
 
In Ireland it's usually pronounced WRECK-a-vick, with the emphasis on the "wreck" part.
