How do you pronounce it?

Yep, "le cell-yay" if speaking quickly/casually.:thumbsup2 In Quebec I don't think you'd find too many people pronouncing "cell eeee ay"

Isn't this so funny? I took three years of high school French yet this whole time I've been saying "Le Cellar" in my head!

No matter how you pronounce it, I call it bad. DH and I are in the minority, I know, but we were so disappointed by the whole experience. The pretzel bread was yummy but everything else was mediocre at best.

Hope we just had an off night and that your experience is better!

In Parisian French, "le" is like "look" without the K ... "sell-YAY" or (less commonly) "sell-YARE." (R being one of the few letters in French that's pronounced at the end of the word.) The I and E form a diphthong. /linguistics major

I can't speak for the Canadians, but I've never gotten a funny look from the CMs there by saying it that way.

He he. You said diphthong. He he.

Yes, that's right. Never say "La" whatever you do. La is completely different from le. I think you're summary is best: Look (hold the "k") sell-yay.

Exactly!:thumbsup2

This question was asked before and I couldn't explain the pronounciation of "e" in le since the "e" doesn't sound like a short or long vowel "e".

A few years ago when I called to make a reservation...I said Le "sell-yay" (as you explained it above) and the CM said...oh, you mean La sell-ee-er..... I said, "no...I mean Le sell-yay..." and he proceeded to say..."yeah, that's what I said" :confused3:lmao::lmao:

I'm a French major, so it always secretly bugs me when people pronounce this sort of stuff wrong! :rotfl:

Luh Cel-ee-a, with the "ee" sound being very short.

NOT la (lah) and NOT les (lay). A lot of Americans see "le" and pronouce it the way "les" should sound. "Les" is plural. La and le are singular.

It means "The Cellar".
