How do you make your magnets?

So....this is my very first Disney cruise and I am going to make magnets for our door and for my parents door. Do you print them out on cardstock and then mount them on the magnet sheets, trimming down the excess. Or....do they make magnet sheets that are able to be fed through a normal home computer printer? What is the easiest and/or best way to do it????

TIA!

Ask 100 people here about that and youll get 100 answers.
This is my personal opinion, in that I went to Michaels, and got some magnet sheets to feed thru a normal printer. Then I googled Disney Cruise Line images and characters, picked what I liked, copied them to a word doc, rearranged a little bit to get what I wanted to fit and what I wanted to say, then printed them and cut them out. From the time I started to the time I finsihed was maybe 1 1/2 hours.

Im sure others have done things differently and Im interested in seeing what else is done.

Also, some one here has reposted a link that has some generic images, and ideas, I just dont know where it is off hand.

I would like to know what you print them on too, I can't imagine it is printer paper. If you don't want full magnet paper what else to use for a great quality picture?

I used Avery magnet paper. They worked great and the colors really popped.

There are several threads where people have already designed magnets that you can have personalized or graphics that you can download for your own use.

You can also try the DISign board for additional ideas and graphics.

I have them done online already but other than printing them out on this computer in black and white on printer paper I don't know how to go about getting a nice print for our door.

I am not computer savvy at all.

I have gotten most of my images from Disboard disigners. They do great work. I print onto regular cardstock on my inkjet paper. I then "laminate" using contact paper, then cut it out. I bought a whole bunch of blank business card magnets from ebay. Then depending on the the size I use from 1/2 to 1 & 1/2 business card magnets. The magnet sheets where too expensive for me. The magnetic rolls from Michaels are usually not "strong" enough or roll up on me. Good luck!

If you don't have a color printer, you can save your magnets to a CD or thumb drive and take it to a Kinkos, OfficeMax, Staples, etc. and for a small fee they can print them in color for you on whatever paper you would like.

If you don't print on magnet paper, you can laminate as described above and by sticky magnets to put on the back.

The magnetic paper is very expensive & I didn't want to risk wasting it on my goof-ups. So I purchased a small box of heavy weight brochure paper to use. Once they were printed I took them to Staples to get them laminated (they were having a sale - like 25 cents each or something). The laminating stuff was a little oversized so I used their paper cutter to trim the sides to about 1/4" overlap so that the images were centered. I purchased a box of their business card magnets too. I used some to make frig. magnets for FE gifts & I used some by cutting them up and placing them on the backs of the laminated signs. I found they were heavier than the magnetic strip (and less curly).

(I have used the DIY home laminating sheets before too & they're not nearly as heavy & smooth as getting them done professionally. I spent too much time designing & making them to skimp on the laminating process.)

Here's what I did:

Went to AC Moore (crafts store)

Bought a roll of laminate. This is the kind that does not need any type of applicator or device.

Bought a sheet of magnet (white on one side, black on the other).

Bought double sided tape.

Made up some pictures for magnets and printed them. Some were the types you see here (the white DCLs with our names on them). We're from the Boston area so I made a Red Sox one and pasted on little Mickey's. Did the same for a Patriots one. The Red Sox one was stolen by our NY table mates :-)

Printed the pictures on our color printer.

Cut out the printouts.

Placed the cutout face down on the sticky side of the laminate. Then placed another piece of laminate on top (sticky side down) to make a sandwich of the cutout.

Cut the laminate edges off to match the shape of the cutout.

Applied two-sided tape to the back of the cutout.

Stuck it onto the white side of the magnet paper (pressing hard).

Cut the magnet paper into the shape of the cutout.

Done.

I did this in August and they help up thoughout the cruise and are now on our refridgerator. I wasn't sure how well the two-sided tape would hold up, but it was fine.

The cost was VERY low as the laminate, magnet paper, and the two-sided tape don't cost much. I found it to be a low risk, high reward approach.

As I said not computer savvy- have no idea what you are talking about- thumb drive?? Have absolutely no idea how to save to a CD.If I go to Staples I wonder if I could log on to Disboards there and have them print it from there?

We printed ours out on heavy stock paper. Then we took "old advertising" magnets and cut them up and glued them to the corners of the sheets. It was the cheap way to go and worked fine.

I have used Vistaprint on-line for door magnets. You make your sign and down load it on their website. The small door sign is about $7.00. It's actually for a car door but we have been using the same ones over and over for the past 5 cruises. we just leave them in the suitcase.

Since our trip on the Magic this past September would be the first of many, I went to Wal-Mart and bought a laminator for $24 and a package of laminating paper for $10. I figured I may use the laminator in the future for my kid's school projects or just for more magnets in the future. The magnetic paper was like $15.00 for 4 sheets, and as you can see by my door below, I would have had to buy like 3 or 4 packs.

Then I just went to AC Moore (similar to Michaels) and bought magnets there to stick on the back of the laminated paper. I purchased both magnetic strip rolls and square piece magnets since I wasn't sure which would work better. With the roll magnetic strips, I did use about 2, 3-inch strips on the back of the magnets to make sure they stuck. Maybe a little longer for the larger graphics. My magnets all stayed put all week. I'll use only the rolled magnetic strips next time. I like the way they keep the paper close to the door versus the square magnets that I bought that made the paper stick out of the door like 1/4 inch if that makes sense. They were thick.

I loved having a very decorated door. Seems like a lot of people still don't do this so people walking up and down our hall were always commenting on how they loved the magnets. :)

I am planning on doing basically the same, execpt using MY old business card magnets from when I sold Pampered Chef. Might as well get some good use out of them!

Did you laminate at all or just put the magnets onto the card stock? I am still debating on that one

This is from our first cruise and they were not laminated. I probably will laminate this next time because I found out that you can laminate at Staples for less that $1.50 a page.
