I'm trying to find a recipe for cooking it... I want to do it in the oven, but I don't want it to take an hour. How do they come out in the microwave? Do I put it on full power, or will that make it EXPLODE??? :lmao:

Also, what do you put IN your baked potato? I want it to be healthy and low cal. So far I just have FF sour cream.... maybe some salt and garlic powder.

I poke a few holes in each side with a fork, and then microwave it for 6 minutes, flip it over and do it again. I'm guessing it's the high power, as I don't change anything on my microwave, I just punch in the #'s:rotfl:

I put mine in the microwave on high for 15 minutes, then bake them in the oven for about 45 minutes. Come out perfect every time. Yeah, it takes time, but they're worth it!

I know you can do them in the microwave but I've never done it. When I'm in a hurry for baked potato (or forgot to put them in early:rotfl:) I'll slice them and layer with butter, garlic, onions and parm cheese in a pan. It speeds the time to about 40mins.

I poke holes in them with a fork, put them in the microwave, and punch the 'baked potato' button. Not sure how long it cooks.

I don't like baked potatoes from the microwave.

I feel they're worth waiting for out of the oven.

Quite often I'll bake several more than I need, keep them in the refrigerator, then when I want one I just slice it all up on a plate and microwave it that way then add my butter (yes, real butter!) and sour cream. Delicious!

I hate them in the microwave they don't seem to taste the same to me.

If I get in a hurry for one. I will boil them sometimes

Cook 2 baking potatoes in the microwave on high for 4-5 minutes and then in the oven for 20-25 minutes which crisps up the skins. I made 3 last week (one for work) and increased the microwave time to 6 minutes. When you are cutting off the bad spots, yes, you poke each one a couple times to let the steam escape. I've had them explode in the oven before and what a mess!!!

I like them with butter only although I do sometimes get a potato at Wendys with a small chili and then dump the chili on it.

Yeah, you give that baked potato respect!!! :thumbsup2

My baked potatoes are far from low fat, but man oh man are they yummy!

First, I scrub them and poke with a fork a few times. Put them in the microwave for 5-6 minutes. I let them cool a bit so I can handle them. I cut them length wise with a knife, and scoop out the innards. The innards go in a bowl with sour cream, butter, shredded cheese, and seasoned salt. That gets mized together until it's the consistency of mashed potatoes. The innards go back in the skins (or shells, as we call them) and then into the oven at 375 for about 30 minutes. Yummmmy!

I think they taste best in the oven. The baked in flavor of the peel makes them taste better. But if I am in a hurry, I will cook them in the microwave until they are almost done, then finish them in a 400 degree oven for about 20 minutes. This will crisp up the peel instead of being soft and mushy.

I like twice baked potatoes, too. I add milk, butter, and top with cheese and bacon. That is for special occasions.:goodvibes

If I make them in the microwave, I just poke some holes in there and then cook them for about 8 minutes on high. I usually just eat baked potatoes with butter and sour cream.

If I take the time to do it in the oven, I usually make twice baked potatoes. :lovestruc Bake for 50 minutes, then scoop out all the filling and mix it with sour cream, cheddar cheese and bacon bits. Put it back in the skin and bake for another 15 minutes. YUM! But not very good for you at all.

When you put them in the oven, do you wrap them in tin foil?

Me too. If I'm doing more than 1, I keep hitting the baked potato button 1 more time for each potato. It only goes to 4, but what a co-inky dink, we are a family of 4.

They are better in the oven, there is no question about that. I would never run my oven to just cook a potato though, but if you're using the oven for something else, you can always toss the potatoes in alongside whatever it is that you're cooking. My 1 friend always thought I was cheap (she'll only eat them from the oven), but I think she's wasting a lot of energy for just a potato or 2.

Betty Crocker says not to. lol She does tell you to pierce with a fork like you do in the microwave though. It's been awhile since I looked it up, but I think the book was saying in foil, you're actually steaming the potato instead of baking it.

I bake my potatoes in the oven at a fairly low temp(about 325) for 90+ minutes. Not fast, but they sure are good.(I also wrap them in foil so if that's a steamed potato so be it).:)

I have always been an oven only potato cooker until I tried the microwave steam bags. They come out great in just a few minutes. Just follow the cooking times on the package for how many you are making.

I like mine in the oven. If in a super hurry I may nuke them in a micro bag for a bit then transfer to the oven.

I also roll mine around in butter, give a liberal shake of kosher salt and seasoning, wrap them up in tin, and let them bake away. The skins are most delicious that way. :)

Hope this helps,

Wash, poke, microwave.

If its summer & we have the grill going, we finish them off by wrapping in foil & letting them cook a little more on the grill. It seems to make the difference to how our parents used to make them when they baked them in the oven for an hour on one of those metal potato prong rack thingies. It was sort of like this, but rectangle shaped & had 6 or 8 prongs. A 1950's gadget for sure.

Although I enjoy the skin of an oven baked potato, time usually demands that I nuke them in the microwave. Be sure to poke them or else they may explode. I just use a sharp knife and give it a little stab 2-3 times each potato.

A nice alternative to salt, pepper and butter and/or sour cream is RANCH dressing. When in diet mode, I'll use low fat ranch to season my baked potato. It's good:lovestruc
