How do you make invitations look professional?

I had Amy make some beautiful birthday invitations for my DS's birthday in March. Since it was just for a bunch of 5 year olds I just printed them on regular computer paper and stuck them in his friend's school folders!

How does it work if I want to make a Disign look like a professional invitation? I know I have to print it on card stock. Is there any special weight or anything that I need? How do I get the edges to look good - do they make them in smaller sizes? Should I just have a copy center print them for me?

I don't even know if my printer at home will print on card stock, but I bet the one at work does so I could use that if I have to.

If the image is a Disney image or a trademarked image...most copy shops will not print them.

I always print my invitations on cardstock. The white cardstock that Walmart sells is a heavy enough weight and is what I generally use. If you want a thicker cardstock you will have to go to an office supply store.

Another option is to have the invitation printed at a photoshop on matte photo paper (if the invitation is 4x6 or 5x7 inches) then use a solid color cardstock that matches a color in the invitation to back it. You can even make the cardstock larger than the original photo size and use it as a back and border around the invitation. Even though print shops will not print trademarked images photoshops will.

Thanks! I think I will just go with regular cardstock. My friend has a paper cutter that is a desktop size (I'm sure all of you creative type people have one or know what I mean!) so I could borrow that to try to make my edges straight. I'm not going to use a Disney design, just a basic clip art house or key or something.
