My husband says it can't be done but I differ but don't know how to do it.....help!

I just put my corned beef in the bottom and the cabbage chunks on top. I add a bit of water or stock and let it go. The corned beef gets a nice soft texture and the cabbage has great flavor!!!!!

Just posted to another Corned Beef thread.:thumbsup2

I put all the corned beef goodies right into the Crock Pot. I always add an Irish beer for my liquid along with carrots, maybe a parsnip, red tatoes, onion, and I add the cabbage about 3 hrs. prior to serving.

I put carrots and cabbage on the bottom and corned beef on top--fat cap up and cook all day on low. I do it all the time and it's yummy!

I could do it in my old Crock, but the new one gets too hot and makes the potatoes mushy! I cook the Corned Beef all day then pour the juice into my pot and cook the potatoes and cabbage on the stove, while I slice the meat. I am going to miss that meal this year as I am scheduled for a colonoscopy and DD is no longer eating meat, so I'm not making it just for DH!

I do it in the crock pot every year. :) I put the corned beef in the bottom, add some water, apple cider vinegar and the spice packet, then cook it for 6 hrs on high, for the last hour I add potatoes and cabbage...this year I have some beets in my fridge, I think I'll add those as well, oh yes, and I also add an onion that has been quartered. :) It's AWESOME!!!! The kids love it! :) We all do. :)

We just put the corned beef, fat side up in water with the spice packet and onions and carrots and put the cabbage and potatoes in like was mentioned, in the last hour:)

Made one yesterday and it was devoured so I'll put on another today:)

Have fun folks,
:thumbsup2

Please post how much this meal costs you to put together and how many people it served. I'm thinking this is a good budget meal....no?

I'm going to try the information listed. I've tried to make corned beef brisket in the past and either the potatoes came out mushy or the cabbage did. My family is not looking forward to trying it again tomorrow. :rotfl:

Depends on what you consider budget....Corned Beef is not cheap here, although they do put it on sale this time of year. I paid $10 for my last one, it fed 3 of us with leftovers enough for 2 maybe. Then with cabbage and potatoes another $4.00?? I like the red skins which are more expensive as well.

Just got back from the local($$) store. It's a 30 min drive to a reg one and my DS is sick so I bit the bullet. Everything was on sale.

Corned Beef $8
Head of Cabbage $1
3# Red Potatoes $3
3 # White Onions $3(won't use them all)
Baby Carrots I had already from Aldi .89

So, about $14 to feed 6+

I've never had mushy potatoes! I cook it 4 hrs on high and it's perfect.

I just got back from the store, too. I got a #3 corned beef on sale for $4.48. #2 cabbage for $0.85. One onion for $0.33. A loaf of rye bread for $1.48. Two pounds of red potatoes for $1.10. Two pounds of carrots for $2.00. This meal will be $10.24 (plus seasoning items I have in my cupboard) for 4 adults...and planning on leftovers.

This is exactly what I do too - we have carrots too

It depends on the price of the meat. Right now everyone has it for $2/lb, so it costs about $8 to feed my family of 5 with leftovers - $6 for the meat, $1 baby carrots, <$1 for a cabbage (the potatoes come from my root cellar more often than not), but it seems like the week of St. Patrick's Day is the only time you can find corned beef for that price. The rest of the year you're lucky to find it under $4/lb.

Last year it was marked down at our local store after St Patty's and I bought a ton of them to stick in our basement freezer. This year they're sold out already so no great post-holiday markdown to stock up. :sad1:

I keep mine simple - corned beef, fat side up, in the crock pot all day with the seasonings that come in the package. Potatoes go in 3hrs before dinner, yellow finn if I have any left from my garden, otherwise redskins, and carrots and cabbage go in 1hr before serving. My whole family loves it, not just for St Patty's but pretty much any time the weather is cooler and nice hot comfort food is in order.

Happy St. Patrick's Day! :thumbsup2

I'm going to try it in the crock pot. Will it be okay to put the carrots in with the meat at the beginning or should I wait until the last hour like the potatoes and cabbage?:confused3

I started mine a little while ago. I put carrots in the bottom--DD likes her carrot soft, but they don't break down or get mushy when cooking all day.

I started mine about 20 minutes ago :thumbsup2 I also put the carrots on the bottome and the potatoes on top of the carrots :)
