I'm trying to eat at least one serving of Oatmeal a day because its good for cholesterol. I love the taste of it but I just can't stand the texture. Ugghh I've been forceing it down but is there a way to buy Oatmeal that is JUST AS HEALTHY that isn't this awful texture?

I like mine really thick. MIL makes hers very runny, like soup-YUCK!

Maybe try making it runnier (is that a word?)

Oatmeal is definitely best in oatmeal raisin cookies! :earboy2:

Unfortunately, for nutrition, I guess you can't beat just eating it the old fashioned way. Like you, though, my family doesn't like the slimy texture. Sometimes I work oatmeal into our diets by using it as a filler in meatloaf made with ground turkey, or by toasting it and sprinkling it on other cereals. Of course we also eat Cheerios, which are made with oats, but I think you have to eat a TON of Cheerios to get the cholesterol-reducing benefit.

Hopefully someone can give you some additional ideas.

Haven't ate oatmeal in ages!!! When I was young (eventhough I prefered cream of wheat....actually put in the freezer for a while and loaded with sugar)......I always ate it pretty thick and also loaded with sugar )but warm

mmm...love oatmeal. I make the cooks in 5 minutes stuff and add a little milk and brown sugar, just a touch. sooo good. but then, I love the texture. at my twins 9 month appt. their ped told me to go ahead and switch them to regular oatmeal, no more baby stuff. They can't seem to handle the 5 minute stuff (no, I don't put sugar or milk in theirs, I put applesauce), but practically inhale the 1 minutes stuff. Its a bit smoother. what kind have you been making? maybe just a change to that?

I've been throwing Cheerios in my Oatmeal to try to kill the slime, doesn't work...LOL!

I've been eating it hot..........maybe adding milk and eating it cold would be better. Hummm.

Oh the instant kind with cinnamon, and like I said I love the taste, I LOVE CINNAMON! Its just that texture. I wish I could eat it hard and crunchy like cookies or even in bar form but with all the additives in the bars........well I think the health benefit may be killed that way.

Would eating granola bars instead of oatmeal be the same? I'm not sure, just a thought.

I can't remember the brand name, but I have bought it at my local "gourmet" grocery store. It is an Irish oatmeal, not processed or rolled like quick oatmeal. It takes about 25 minutes to cook, but it is so delicious. Tastes very much the same as regular, but is much chewier, and has a slight nutty flavor. I love it with brown sugar and walnuts. When I was a child, I used to pour milk on my oatmeal.

I stick to grits and eat Cheerios for low choleterol ;)

I use the old fashioned Quacker oats, but I like to add the oats at the beginning of cooking, not after the water has boiled.
I put some brown sugar and a bit of milk in mine at serving time. Yum!!

Maybe you could go online and find a good oatmeal cookie or bar recipe? Just Google "oatmeal bars" or "healthy oatmeal cookies" or something along those lines? Good luck!!

My dad was just telling me about the Irish-cut oatmeal he got at a natural foods store. He said it isn't a huge improvement texture-wise, but it is less processed. The more a grain is processed, the less benefit you get from it, so that means the Irish oatmeal is healthier than the Old-Fashioned Quaker which is healthier than the Quick Oats which is healthier than the instant-in-a-cup type. I guess that means maybe if you eat the Irish kind you can at least eat less of it for the same benefit!

Like others have said..get the Irish steel cut oatmeal. make several servings and keep it in the fridge, warm up in the microwave. There is nothing better.

I agree with denisenh - I like the Quaker old fashioned oatmeal. It's a much different consistency than the instant oatmeals. I make it in the microwave in 1 1/2 minutes. I don't add much water because I don't like it soggy. When it's done, I add milk and maple syrup.

I'm going to see if I can find the Irish kind although around here I doubt it. I will try the old fashion kind and see if its better.

Alan I wish I could just stick to grits! LOVE THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree - the instant stuff is a lot like the slime my kids used to play with. ;) We usually use the quick oats.

I still cook it in the microwave - less clean up that way. I cook it with milk & a bit of brown sugar & cinnamon stirred in. Just be careful not to nuke more than about 45 - 60 seconds at a time until it's done if you use skim or 2%. DH nukes his for a full 3 min the 1st time w/o it cooking over, but then he uses whole milk.

ETA: I should have explained that better.
1/4 c Quick Oats
1/2 c milk
1 tsp brown sugar
1/4 tsp cinnamon
(also good with a couple Tbl raisins or 1/2 tsp vanilla - we use real, not extract)
Put all in a Corelle cereal bowl. (that size) Nuke on HIGH for 1 1/2 min (for skim/2%). Stir & nuke for 45 sec. Stir & nuke for 30 sec. It's usally done enough for me at that point.
