How do you leave the room when checking out

CRobin....I guess it's like most things...you get different answers depending on who you talk to. In my case, I asked both housekeeping and another CM and they both told me that any leftover food would be pitched due to health and safety reasons. I was thinking that in this day of instant litigation, someone would sue Disney if they got stale crackers or something!

But others here have posted a different story. So I guess the definitive answer is, as usual......"it depends". :p

A couple of times we have found leftover stuff in the little cupboard above the fridge. One time it was biscuit mix, another time a box of uncooked pasta. Don't ask me why, but when we get there I automatically look through all the kitchen cupboards. I guess housekeeping doesn't bother to check up there.

I've never seen a mousekeeper tall enough to look in those cabinets:-)

We strip the beds down to the mattress pads, and put all of the linens including towels and bathmats in one tub. In addition I always run a load of all the blankets from the beds we wash them and throw then in the dryer when we leave. I always do this as I know things like sheets are changed out but, Blankets and mattress pads are not. ( I also wash the blankets and Matress pads, and sheets, On arrival just so it is the same soap the kids are used to.) I leave all unopened food. Clean the kitchen thoroughly, vacum the unit, And thats about it!

this is my only problem with DVC rooms I keep having to have DBF get glasses down for me. Eventually he learned to leave them on the counter.....I could work for mousekeeping:(

Or maybe get a job at IASW..... you could fill in for the animotronic figures as they're sent out for repair ;-)

You guys are too funny!! Makes me smile :p and chuckle :)

We leave dirty towels in a heap on the floor. Never thought of stripping the bed, but I'll do that next trip so one of DIS friends can get in sooner! We left unopened food on the counter with a note for mousekeeping. I do like the idea of giving it to a bell man or other person. It is a shame to let good stuff go to waste.

And we do a general tidy up.

Thanks for all who do the same.

I do NOT strip beds, take out garbage, make the bed, vacuum, or do the dishes. I DO straighten up so the place is not a disaster zone, rinse dishes and load them in the dw.

Although I understand there is a variety of opinions, I can't see cleaning the place for housekeeping. After all, I'm on vacation. We pay them, and I tip everytime.

I would caution against making beds, as I have heard stories about housekeeping assuming the beds have not been slept in. Someone here actually reported finding socks in the sheets! :teeth:

PS- Do they wash ALL the dishes (even from cabinets) everytime???

My DH teases me but I make the bed.

We leave used towels in bathtub.

Remove the trash, load the dishwasher & put it thru the wash cycle. Clean the sink, clean the tables, countertops, & doublecheck to make sure we didn't leave anything. (Yes, we leave any unopen soda, or foodstuff. Hoping they will use it instead of throwing it out.)

But then is anyone going to admit they leave it a mess???

Still leave a tip, they have to wash the floors, vacuum, clean all those bathrooms, lots to do to get it in Disney shape for the next DVC member!:p

Well I am not nearly as virtuous as some of you! I don't do any of the above. We do not make the bed, or wash the dishes. But I do leave a nice tip!:p

I just leave! The trash is in the room in the trash can. I have NEVER used the vacum at DVC and don't intend to start. (The iron may have been broken out once or twice). The towels are pretty much piled in a pile on the bathroom floor.

I would agree that making the bed is not always a good idea, they need to REMEMBER to change the linens. Now as for the sock, those could have been clean and the sock just went through the laundry with the sheets.

I may be in the minority, or just those like me are not admitting it, but we don't do anymore than we do in a regular hotel. What we bring into the room, we take with us, other than the garbage. We do run the last load of dishes. We do not strip beds, take out garbage, vaccume etc. We do not leave the room trashed, but I do not go on vacation to help with housekeeping, bad enough they want me to do those chores at home. ;)

I must confess that I only strip the bed to make it a given that the maid will remove the sheets and makeup the bed. A friend of mine was away on business and had a problem other than a sock in her bed in a first class hotel. Clearly the maid never touched the bed.

I now make it a habit of turning the top sheet and blankets completely down and giving a full inspection before I get into any bed other than my own.

Depressed is right!! I dislike those little envelopes on the door knob that remind you that it is check-out day!

Anyway, we tend to leave the unit pretty much like we got it, except that we start the dishwasher as we leave so the dishes will be clean, but not put away. We leave the dirty towels in the tub. The beds are made (habit), rooms clean and trash emptied. Refrigerator we will often leave as is. Sometimes we have unopened soda or non perishable items (laundry detergeant, etc) that someone may want to use and we just hate being wasteful and throwing it out.

I know it sounds redundant, but as a Captain of a local FD, please do not leave any dishwashers, clotheswashers or dryers running unattended.

We always put used towels and bed linens together on a hard surface floor (bathroom or, if at OKW, in the laundry room. Trash is in cans, which includes any open food items. Unopened perishables we leave, and from a conversation with mousekeeping understand that the staff will use items which are unopened and appear to be fine (in that case we had cheese and lunch meat which we hadn't gotten around to using for sandwiches since we were working on the goal of eating our way through Epcot!).

Obviously it is easier for mousekeeping to do their job correctly if the beds are stripped or at least unmade. Otherwise I think they may be unsure if they were slept in. Same for the dishes, I feel sure that they will run the dishwasher regardless, and actually would hope they would because our dishes tend to look clean even when used (you have to understand, we don't cook -- we use glasses and possibly bowls for cereal, but once they are rinsed and put in the dishwasher it could be confusing since they definitely don't look dirty.

Never used the vacuum and only would do so if we had some unusual spill of chips or whatever. We fork over money for points, dues and tips for mousekeeping, I certainly don't think it is necessary for us to thoroughly clean the unit, also, particularly since most of what we could do would be done again by the cleaning crew.

It seems from the variety of answers given here that this another one of those 'grey' areas (like the trash room location!!) that could so easily be cleared up by having some kind of information in the unit from DVC.

A simple note telling us how / where to leave towels / bedding / dishes to make it easiest for Housekeeping to do their job would be helpful, wouldn't it?

I have stayed in non-DVC 'home-away-from-home' units where this is done - in one instance we were asked to leave all bedlinens and towels just inside the door for collection after check-out. Simple.

I don't see any gray areas, it's all just personal choice. What are we required to do: Absolutely nothing.

My DW will really tidy up the room the morning of TnT day. Why ? She doesn't want housekeeping to think we're slobs. Maybe that's why some people go all out on check out day and others do very little.

Definitely NOT the case. In fact a couple years ago I brought this very topic up at the Annual Meeting at BWV. I asked why they didn't have a place that we could leave unopened, non-perishable food which could be given to a local food bank, and was told they couldn't do it for insurance liability reasons.
