How do you keep people out of your pool?

So, MM? Mal and I will be over this weekend with the kids to swim.

I'm sorry, what was your question again?;)

We had a neighbour from our street come by with her 6 and 9 year olds and ask if they could come in for a swim. It was really hot so we said fine and then the mom turns to leave ---like we were also going to babysit them and supervise them in the pool. At that point we said "No way!".

The mom still gives us the evil eye when we're out walking but there was no way we were going start doing free babysitting and lifeguarding. People really do have a lot of nerve.

I had a trampoline as a teenager and there were unwanted, uninvited neighbor kids on it all the time. Sometimes I didn't even know who they were. I'd just tell them that they weren't allowed to play on it and to go home.

High fences make good neighbors.

Where I live, a pool is considered an "attractive nuisance" and the owner bears the responsibility of making sure that it is properly guarded with safety measures etc. My parents put in a 5 foot high stockade fence with a locking gate all around the pool.

Is there not a requirement for pools to be fenced in where you live? Maybe I'm mistaken, but I thought all pools had this requirement. Anyway, I'd be annoyed if this was happening to my parent...highly concerned also because of the potential for accidents.

Nope not all. There are still many communities with no ordinances requiring any type of safety measures (however they are becoming fewer and further between). I am just waiting for a bill that is in congress now requiring all....I said all.... pool owners to have any pool fully fenced in , on all four sides. Meaning the back of the house (if there are door or windows that open up to the pool) will not count.

It definably is never a bad idea to fence in any pool (and especially the baby pools as they are perceived as a safer pool). Pool alarms are mandatory in certain areas and states (funny how that’s gets pushed through when the owner of the manufacture is on council) but I feel not very reliable.

Fence it and in no uncertain terms tell them there is absolutely
no swimming when nobody is home.

When my brother and I were younger, we had an above ground pool. My parents had a 6 foot stockade fence surrounding it with a pad lock to keep us kids out. It worked and gave us privacy even though the yard itself had a stockade fence around it.

I guess I don't understand the problem. Your mother doesn't want the kids in her pool? Then she tells the mother that she doesn't want the kids in her pool. :confused3

Just go over, be neighborly, and say, "Look, Freida, the kids keep coming over to the pool, and I can't be responsible for them. So I need you to make sure that they stay out of our yard. Good thing you have your own pool, huH? Well, take care! See ya at the block party!"

Simple.

Yep, I guess I just don't get the problem.

I cannot imagine anywhere where there was not a State or Local ordinance. And, even if there were not one, I would simply never have an unsecured pool on my property.

An inground pool should be completely fenced.
An above ground pool should have gates at each access.

And, yes, I agree with the first lady... 'just say no!'

As stated it depends on your local ordinances. We don't have a fence, YET!

I thought the same thing. No different than any pushy kid out there that invites themselves over to spend the night, etc.

I wonder if your homeowners insurance requires a locked fence around the pool, no matter what the local authorities say.

I work in an insurace agency and believe me, if you don't have it locked and fenced your policy can get cancelled. :(

Some companies won't even touch you if the pool has a slide or diving board.

We were required to have a fence no shorter than 6 ft. completely around the pool area by the city ordinances. A fence with a gate you can lock is the best you can do.

OR put a nice big doberman, German Shepard or rottweiler in there.

We have a 6ft fence AND a german shepard.... so no unwanted pool guests here!!!:rotfl:

Just don't pissoff anyone or they will throw nails in your pool.

I just had to call the police early from my nut job neighbor next store that accused a few of the 11 and 12 yrold girls for spray painting his van over night. I told him it was most likely the teens that run all night up and down the alley but I guess he didn't like that.

So be Nice and put up a big fence.

Get out of here

Good fences, make good neighbors. Get a fence. Frankly your homeowners might not be happy you don't have a fence.

If someone drowns, and you are sued you might find yourself in hot water. Make sure you read the fine print.:thumbsup2

We got an Umbrella Policy in addition to the homeowners insurance.
