Ok....so DH adopts and brings home a dog two weeks ago. Other than the fact that I am not an animal person, she's the perfect dog. Very calm...fits right in with the kids, etc.

She's got a cough and is taking an antibiotic and I'm wondering what you all put the medicine in to get your dogs to eat it. Hot dogs, cheese, dog food???

I feed my dog her medicine, when she needs it, at her normal feeding times. She eats everything in the bowl!

Try the cheese of a piece of lunch meat first. With most of my dogs, that works. For the others, I unfortunatly have to cram it down there throat....not fun either...as they like to trick ya and spit it out when they think your not looking.

Peanut butter might work too....experiment and see what works

My dogs just eat it! I know they are strange! No hiding in cheese, peanut butter, lunchmeat or in the dog food.

We say its time for medicine, and they come running!

Peanut butter....I had forgotten about that one.

We had been giving her a small portion of a hot dog...just enough to tuck the pill into but a lady at the vet's said it's not good for them. But I thought dairy wasn't good for them either.

We have one that we can hide it in sliced cheese and gobbles it down. Our shepherd/lab mix we have to open her mouth and put the pill in and then rub it down her throat. I have long skinny fingers, so I can get it pretty far back in her mouth.

Get a piece of really soft bread put the pill in it and fold it in half.

Hot Dogs( any pork product for that matter) are bad for dogs....they cant process pork...

I learned that the hard way when Miracle got pancrantitis

I open my dogs mouth and push the pill down their throat. They never allow me to trick them with food, but they don't mind me "forcing them" to take an pill. Some pills should not be chewed, they need to go into the stomach whole and then into the digestive system. Check with your vet.

Good luck with the dog, and I hope it gets well fast.

My boxer has an allergy to grass and all summer we have to give her benadryl. I hate it!! She'll do the peanut butter for a couple of days then refuse it. She clamps her mouth shut and I have the darndest time getting her to take it. But, I've never tried bread... Thanks for the tip.

Sounds like you got lots of good ideas. My dog had lyme disease and when she stayed a weekend at the kennel they said they dip a dog bone treat into peanut butter and then push the pill in the pb. I tried it at home and it worked but was a bit messy.

heart4pooh, any chance your dog can take liquid Benedryl?

Bear (black lab) is also allergic to grass and we give him antihistamine am and pm. We put it in a piece of a cheese slice (processed works best) and he takes it easily. He thinks it is a treat. He is such a stomach driven dog it is not funny. He eats everything!! Good luck

Monty Dog has severe allergies to grass and pollen.

Liquids we're lucky because he likes them...thinks it's a treat
he'll even sit nice and give you his paw for liquid antibiotic.

His allergy pills we stick in the middle of a Snausage treat. Or we just give them to him. He just takes them.

Of course, this is the same dog who loves going to vets.

he's a weirdo.

Open his mouth, put the pill/s back by his throat, close his mouth, rub his neck a bit, all done. :)

I just hold it in my hand and she eats it from my hand like a treat. This dog will eat ANYTHING.

The dog who is gettin pills now was taking them in cheese, wouldn't take that, now we onto Roast Beef. Whatever it takes so I dont have to pry his mouth open

Thanks for all the advice....I will try tomorrow to just hide it in her bowl.

How would we know if she's allergic to the grass?

The vet mentioned peanut butter. It works for my two! :)
