How do you get your husband to go....

Ok. I am a newlywed and it is wonderful and all that but......he is not as ummm......disney spirited as I am. So when he tells me that he would rather not go back to Disney World until we have kids this presents a problem. I want to go a lot sooner than that (we have already decided we are going to wait 5 years to have any kids).

My question is to those of you who have husbands or wives that are not as thrilled about Disney as you. How do you get them to go or get them excited about going?

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Does your DH golf (he really should if you live in Alabama-DH just got back, loves the courses there)? My DH was never a big Disney fan. What works for us is that DH golfs virtually every day we're in Disney World and I hit the parks (alone, but hey, it works for us). Then we meet up at the resort or a park, and spend the evening together. We've spent many evenings wandering WS, eating dinner, watching Illuminations. Now he really looks forward to our trips to WDW. This last trip, he even volunteered to go to a character meal with me-I never would have expected that!

Although, now we have children, and I thought it would be different, i thought he would be just as excited as I am to go back..we do still have 5 months to wait. BUT...I hate being excited alone! MY dd is too young to be really excited, although i think she is the only one who hasn't told me..."enough disney already..give me a break" Husbands, or not. I guess not everyone is into Disney like us.

I just plan the vaca's now..and try to surprise him with them. Even adding a little something extra to the mix he may enjoy..like espn dinner, or go during football season and get him tickets to a game *nfl* while we are down this way we are all excited and can enjoy a good time.

Ok I like Disney, but if I didn't here are a few things my wife could say to make me want to go.

Golf
Disney sports complex
Espnzone
Ride or drive in a Nascar
Tower of Terror
Haunted Mansion
Star Wars ride
All of the resturants (any type of food he likes mention a specific one)
get a beer from a different country..lol
and the easiest way to get me to go..........would you rather be at work??

Those are good suggestions. He does golf so I am sure he would enjoy that (I would have to talk him into spending that much money to golf though). I had forgotten about the Nascar driving experience that might be something he would like. I just don't know. He doesn't like all the cutesy stuff at Disney World. So when I say "Let's go to Disney World!" He's like "Mickey Mouse, no thanks". I will mention the golf and nascar things to him for sure though. All of the others we have done and he enjoys, but again it is the cutesy factor that gets him.

Does he like to fish? WDW has some of the best fishing in the country.

He could watch a game at WWoS, play tennis or golf, go swimming at the hotel pool or BB or TL, bird watch (there are a ton of birds that visit WDW), go boating, biking, horseback riding (very tame).

Anyway good luck. I have been trying to get my brother to come to WDW for around 28 years. He went in 1974 and has not been back since.

He lives in St Augustine. WDW is about 1 1/2 to 2 hours from his front door.

the thing is he would love Epcot!!! but he won't even try.

My DH is kind of the same way & we also do not have children at this time. I've found out what he enjoys doing on vacation, so we just alternate between WDW, the beach, the mountains, etc. Your DH may even agree to a combination trip such as 3-4 nights in Destin & 3-4 nights at WDW. I can usually get my DH to agree to a WDW trip (or mini trip) every 12-18 months (now I could go every 3-6 months easily!). Once he gets there, he has a great time though & says he just loves to watch the expressions on my face & how excited I get about being there. I also have heard great things about the golf courses at WDW from my dad.

I'm not sure exactly, but I heard that some of the golf courses are having a cut in there greens fees...so it is a much better deal to golf for the next few months.

I do remember that one of them was going to be closed for 'refurbishing' but there are still lots to choose from.

I forgot about the fishing!! That is his passion. Does anyone know where you can fish at WDW and where the best fishing is? He could do that one day and I could go to MK (got to cut down on that cutesy factor).

I appreciate everyone's suggestions. I would have never thought about a lot of these things because when I go, I go for the parks. I will just have to adjust to a different way of thinking when I plan a trip for just the two of us.

Switching between WDW, the beach, and other places would probably work also. The only problem with that is not getting to go as much as I would like (which would be at least two times a year).

Boy, do I understand DHs not going for the "cutsey" factor! I don't know TOO much about the fishing, but I think there's a 2 hour bass fishing excursion, where, depending on where you're staying, they pick you up at your resort beforehand. At POR, there's cane pole fishing there, where for some inexpensive price ($4/hour), you can fish there. And although I'm not sure of this, I think I heard once about an early morning excursion you could take on the WS lagoon before Epcot opens (or was that one wishful thinking on my part?). Hopefully, the Disney website, under "recreation", has more info. Me, I'm going to look for the characters, so I can stand in line to get my picture taken, then go to Fantasyland and ride some rides.

FW probably has the best fishing.

WDW sometimes has bass fishing on seven seas lagoon and bay lake, as well.

there is also one that goes from PO.

the other places I think he does.

at WDW if your room doesn't contain a kitchen (FW or DVC villas) - then the fish is returned to the water.

if he really likes to fish - he will LOVE central florida - he can do lake fishing and around 90 miles away he can do ocean or gulf fishing.

it is the visitor guide for Kissimmee (the area next door to WDW) - it tells about all the fishing and other stuff in the immediate area.

IT IS FREE.

and has one of the best and more actual maps around. Much better than the AAA maps - not to mention WDW.

I wouldn't say my husband isn't disney spirited, however, he isn't as die hard disney as me.

He was happy to go on our honeymoon last year. We came back and he was like...well I had a great time but "we're not gonna be a family that goes to disney every year". Not what I wanted to hear.

Fast forward to March and we're trying to plan our summer trip. I told him I wanted to go to disney and he said no. I then reminded him that he loved disney. I then priced cruises, trips to vegas or hawaii, even europe. I showed him that disney was actually a bargain and a great time compared to anywhere else we would go.

He is now very excited about our upcoming trip, but when I hint I'd like to learn more about DVC on this trip, he reminds me we aren't going to be a disney family every year.

We'll see about that...

Awwww....yall are so cute. It is nice to know that I am not the only one with a husband that is not as excited over Disney as me. I think if I show him the other side of Disney (i.e. fishing, golfing, eating, ) then he will come around eventually. He has been twice however and is still against going back. I going to use some of the tactics mentioned on this thread to change his mind.

Alabamagirl, I have been married 23 years and my husband *STILL* wont even consider an disney vacation. The kids and I have gone different times but he wont go with us. His big thing is that Disney is an " amusement park" and that he hates those. He wont listen to any other point of view on that .


Since both Kids will be away at college this fall will be making my first Solo trip Sept29-Oct4. I cant wait I love Disney .

Try some of the backstage tours, those are really interesting. Like Aqua Seas ,Backstage Safari, around the world on a Segway, not kiddy or cutesy at all.

Well, I'm going to post here, but I don't really have an answer to the question. I really don't know how I got my DH to go so often. We've been 5 times now, and doesn't love it like I do. He's just a very good sport. He goes because he knows how happy it makes me. Having said that, he did ask me for a break after our last trip, and after crying for days I realized that it wasn't the end of the world, and I'm planning the next trip with my Dad (another good sport.) If he turns out not to like it, I wouldn't be opposed to going solo in the future. But over the past 5 years, I've tried to find a balance between how much I love WDW and not wanting to 'drag' my DH too much. Some of the compromises included shorter trips to WDW every other year (like a long weekend - enough to satisfy my appetite, but not enough to wear him out) and taking other vacations during the year that he chose that I might not be crazy about. It's all about compromise.

My hubby HATES to travel, and his idea of a vacation is spending a few days with his relatives . All the time our girls were growing up I took them alone or with my sister's family. threaten to go solo i did cause dh said he never wanted to go back to disney again. well never say never cause he knew i would leave him home so now he goes and is a good sport about it. we are going in oct and i got him the petty driving experience to show my appeciation. besides sex i'm sure you can get him something he will enjoy,fishing ,a boat ride,parasailing. there is so much to choose from.
