We aren't renting a car -- if we want to have lunch at AKL after doing AK, do you have to get on a bus to get there?

If so, what are the dining options at AKL, and is it worth it for all that bus travel?

Thanks in advance!

I'm pretty sure the only kind of park transportation to AKL is the bus. I've never been to AKL so I can't help you with the restaurants but I'm sure someone else can. :)

Yes, the only way to get to the AKL from the AK using Disney transportation is to take the bus. The AKL is very close, so it will be a short ride. If you do not have a car, the only other option is a taxi.

The options for lunch at the AKl are Mara (like a food court) and JIKO (upscale, sit down restaurant). BOMA (buffet) is not open for lunch.

FWIW, I'd recommend BOMA - lots of choices for both adventurous and not-so-adventurous eaters. You could try for the earliest dinner seating (around 4 or 4:30, I think) or the latest breakfast seating (10:45 or 11).

The AKL is just beautiful - worth a trip to look around. There is an animal viewing area there just off the awesome main lobby. We saw giraffes, zebras, ostriches and some type of deer/antelope animals. The large gift shop is fun, too - lots of African items as well as the more traditional Disney items.

Enjoy your trip!

the problem isn't getting to AKL from AK - that is a quick bus ride. You'd be catching a bus from AK park, anyway. The tougher part is getting from AKL back to wherever you are staying - if it is early enough, you can bus to one of the parks and take the transportation back to your resort from there. But if it is late, it is the downtown disney express for you.

Because the Mara quickservice is the only lunch option at AKL, my suggestion would be an early seating for dinner at Boma. They start serving there around 5. Go early and check out the resort, usually plenty of animals are out on the savannahs around that time.

There are better quick service food options at the AK Park (such as Tusker House and Flame Tree).

I really want to thank everyone for their suggestions and information. I think we'll skip visiting AKL this time. The problem is that we usually don't rent a car, so getting back to the Poly from resorts not on the monorail is such a pain. Those buses!

We had the worst time getting back from the Hoop de doo revue in August. The park closed really early, so while we usually would have taken the boat back to the MK, we were forced to take buses the whole way home. Never again!

Dh and I went to several resorts for dinner. We did not have a car. Taking Disney transportation wasn't that inconvenient, but when we were tired we just took a taxi. The taxi ride was never more than $20.00. In fact it was $14.00 from AKL to POR and $12.00 from POLY to POR. It was less than $10.00 from POR to DD and Boardwalk. We found this to be a nice option and definately worth the cost since the best resturants we ate at were at the resorts and not in the parks.

To get from AKL to a monorail resort isn't all that hard. We did it several times last week. Just take the bus to the MK and then hop the resort monorail. There seemed to be lots of MK buses and we never had to wait very long for it, and the monorail is always a nice ride. We had to do this for PS at CR and Poly, so it's pretty easily done.

As for AK to AKL, yes, you must ride a bus but since they're so close together, it's really only a 5 minute ride. And since AKL doesn't share with anyone, the buses don't get so full as some of the others.
