How do you get the Disney Dinning Plan?

I have been reading a lot of posts about how people say they are the Disney Dinning Plan, etc & I was just curious how do get it? My family & I don't plan to use it for our next trips to WDW in August & December, because from what we know about it you have to have all your meals in WDW & we like to also eat at various restaurants outside of WDW. So basically I am asking how do you get on the Disney Dinning Plan, because I asked my Dad when he called CRO to make our reservations for the Contemporary if they asked would we like to purchase it & he told me the CM only asked if we needed park tickets, so basically I am just curious how this all works.

To get the dining plan, you must book a package which includes room and at least one day's tickets. The dining is 1 CS, 1TS and 1 Snack per person per night of stay, and everyone in the room must be on the same package.

Oh ok now I see how it works. After reading what you said it's still not a good deal for my family & not just because we have to have all our meals there. It's also not good for us because we don't like to be in a package deal & we already have park tickets from previous vacations with 3 days left on them.
