How do you get the cake home?

Do they pack the leftovers up well? Does it hold up on the plane ride home?

I have heard of people taking the top layer of their cakes home, but not the rest of the leftovers - the waitstaff just dumps the leftover cut portions of the cake in a box. We ate ours over the course of our 2-week honeymoon.

I know there have been several threads about the best way to get a cake top home on a plane. Personally, I'd rather go back to WDW and have a small, fresh version of the cake made for my anniversary....

Gasp!!....They...throw....away...the leftovers???? For shame! Wow, that's a great idea to get a small version of your cake during future visits. I think I want to take the top home though. I guess we are only a 3 hour plane ride, so maybe it would hold up ok.

Can anyone on here vouch for a cake top that made it home safely?

Hey, thanks! I had Patricia Lejeune for hair and makeup: www.lejeune-pca.com. Disney doesn't have its own cosmetology team anymore - just a list of vendors that many people use.

And sorry for the confusion - they don't throw away the leftovers. They give them to you in a cardboard box. I just meant that they don't, like, swaddle individual pieces in plastic wrap and place them in an airtight container. They just put the cake in a standard cardboard cake box in a bit of a pile.... a delicious pile...

Thanks! I'll check out her website. How early in advance did you need to book her? and did you come with a hairstyle and make up style that you had in mind or did she suggest? I have no clue about hair and make up-I'm a little hippie girl and I haven't worn make up since the last wedding I attended in 1999 for my best friend! But I do want to be princess-y for my big day. I really like how your hair and make up is so natural looking in your pictures.

I ordered a 20" cake from CRT, and had the YC freeze it until we left, mainly because the thing wouldn't fit in the fridge. I live a 3 hr drive from Orlando, and it held on fine. It was barely thawed by the time we got home. And it was in the back seat, probably in the sun too. We had a piece about 3 months later, and it was still good, but the fridge broke, and it was in the 6th month and warm by the time we got the thing replaced, so we just threw it away. But we didn't freeze it the whole time. It would have been fine if it wasn't for the fridge breaking.

I had to throw mine away!!

We had it for the week after out wedding at the hotel and then it had to go.... I couldn't have brought it back to Canada, so we tried to eat it, but it there was lots left... I happen to love cake, and this was GOOD cake, not to mention absurdly expensive, and throwing it out broke my heart!

It felt like such a waste and made me wish I hadn't bothered with a cake.

We are definately going to have leftover cake. Do you think we can provide the Floridian with tupperware for the leftovers? My parents are in a suite at Saratoga so the cake should fit since it's a big fridge. Well....hopefully it will fit. We really have too much cake.

Our plan is to freeze the cake until our video comes in and then eat cake and watch it!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't wait lol.

What kind of weddings did you have, wishes or escape?? If you're having a small escape wedding, how big is the cake? I just assumed it was a small one.

If we're at Sea Breeze Pointe and having a room at the BWV we can always get someone to nip it up to our room, or is there another way?

I have heard of people providing special cake boxes to the waitstaff so their guests could each take a piece home, so I don't see why not. And if they won't let you, just transfer it to Tupperware when you get back to Saratoga Springs.

The Escape Wedding Cake feeds 35 people, supposedly, but I've heard people say it could have fed 50. It's two tiers.

You have to get one of your guests to collect this stuff for you and take it back. They might box it up for you, but you're in charge of it after that. My MIL brought our cake back to our resort for us on the charter bus.

We upgraded to a larger cake at my DH's request, so I brought large (kleenex box sized) generic tupperware containers. My planner had the server fill those and then the rest of the cake went in the bakery boxes. We kept the top tier, my parents/sister took a box, dh's family took a box and each couple got a tupperware container. They all mentioned later in the week how delicious the cake was, so I'm sure they were enjoying the snacks in the room. We managed to finish the top tier by the end of our week. OUr box did not fit in the fridge in our room, so we had to take the cake out of the box and just set it in the fridge (had a filling that had to be refridgerated). In hindsight I would have brought way more tupperware and split the cake up more to avoid those bakery boxes, though the server would have hated me. We did have to take everything to our room ourselves after the ceremony (though we were at the GF and I should have just taken it down to the desk and asked for a bellhop to do it!) Our planner brought the unity candle, etc over from the WP to the cake cutting and had everything neatly packed up for us at the end of our hour.

Mine survived a 12 hour drive home! As soon as the wedding was over, we had it sent to our room. We had a fridge in the room that we turned up as cold as would go. We put the cake in there an didn't open the door again until we got ready to leave (3 days after the wedding). The cake was pretty much frozen at that point. We then put it in a cooler bag that we got at Sam's Club several years ago. It made the whole way home, although it did slide a little. I didn't bring it home to save, but rather for my mother and brother to have a slice of since they didn't get to go to the wedding.

We brought ours home! After the reception, a CM boxed up our cake into two boxes. One contained the anniversary layer, one contained the leftovers from the bottom layers. Each box was pretty big - about 16" x 16" by 8" tall. (Yeah... it was fun carrying them from the reception to the hotel.) We got the hotel to hold the leftovers in their big refrigerator, but I wouldn't recommend that because we actually never got it back. Not the fault of the hotel, really just our fault because we were too busy/lazy to go get it, and the mini fridge in our room was holding the anniversary layer!

Anyway, we kept that in our fridge for about 3-4 days, then we brought it back on the plane with us - I carried it on the plane and I don't remember what we did with it but I think it went under the seat in front of me. The flight was about 3 hours. Then we brought it home, wrapped it in foil and put it in the freezer. When we moved about six months later, we brought it with us and put it in the new freezer. Six months later we were enjoying it on our anniversary! Anyway I hope this shows that you can pretty much do anything with it and it will be okay. BTW we did not get food poisoning and we continued to eat the cake for about a week after our anniversary.
