How do you find the value price for resale?

I have a few things that I'm thinking of selling and am not sure how to investigate what to price it at.

I have 1 body, 2 lenses and 1 camera backpack bag that I'd like to sell.

Thought maybe if I could get enough from all 4 pieces that I'd get a new walk around f2.8 lens :rolleyes1.

TIA!

Average the price of completed auctions on eBay. If I'm going to sell on Craigslist, I usually add about 10-15% to that price.

Of course, I see plenty of crazy-high starting prices on eBay or Craigslist (I don't know how people could possibly think that they're Canon XT has increased in value since them purchasing it, but whatever), so you can always try going higher.

I didnt' know that you could search completed sales on ebay to average prices. I'll have to check it out and see what I come up with. I know the body has dropped crazy in value - couple hundred bucks would be GREAT, if I could get it.

Another good resource is the buy & sell forums at Fred Miranda. I think you have to be registered to do a search, but you can see what others are asking for your items.

That is very helpful! Thanks. They actually had my stuff, minus the 100-300 lens. I didn't have to register to just look at the store. Are the buy & sell forums for people who are registered where you just post what you have?

Just do your search like it was for active items, then click on "completed items" in the left hand column. It will show you everything in the past 2 weeks.

Just curious, what do you consider a good 2.8 "walking around" lens? I've been fantasizing about something like that myself....

Before selling high value electronic items on E-bay, be sure you are aware of how a charge-back scam is conducted.

There are ways to protect yourself, but you cannot totally eliminate the possibility of a change-back scam.

This is not usually a problem with small value items, just with high value electronic, including cameras, that can be easily re-sold.

That's what the buy & sell forums are for, correct. To be able to sell an item I think you have to be registered for a certain amount of time and have a certain # of posts. I have bought items through similar forums before with good results, but have never sold. You have to be extra diligent in researching sellers though, because Paypal won't protect you like they would if you were purchasing on ebay.

Are you sure about that? I think the you can file with Paypal regardless of whether it was on ebay or not. And if you use your credit card through Paypal, you are protected up to whatever the filing period is with your cc#. I had a claim from someone in Australia 4 MONTHS after the sale and Paypal dinged me for $265.

Not sure where I'd go, TBH. I have the nifty 50 and DH bought me a fisheye for Christmas. I have a 100-300 (which I'm actually wanting to sell), I've had it for quite some time and almost NEVER use it. Which walk around lens will be for another thread. :rotfl: FIRST I've got to sell the stuff I have.

As for selling, DH knows about the ebay scams that are out there. I've thought about listing it on Craigslist to see if I get any nips that way.

I still sell on ebay. I actually have a dress/costume store on Ebay, so I can't give up on it. I get worked up over the Paypal nonsense every now and then, but try to protect myself as best I can and move on. I don't want to go through life thinking everyone is out to get me.

Just be sure to ship to a confirmed address, ship within 7 days (which I can't do in the dress biz because I have to make the items once they sell) and be sure to get signature confirmation on sales over $250. And of course have proof of delivery regardless of sale amount.

I'll be sure to watch for your thread. I'd like to save up for a nicer "walking around" lens. I think now that I've used my 30 mm f1.4 more, I'd be ok with that, but I'm not sure I can go without some sort of zoom. So I'd also like to hear what everyone else uses.
