How do you feel about DH giving you a vacuum for Mother's Day.

My best Valentine's Day gift was a garbage disposer. I loved it. To each his own. If it was the vacuum I wanted I would love it. Looking at a central vac system now and if I got that I would be thrilled.

I laughed when I saw this thread because my husband usually buys me Pandora beads, but I asked him to buy me a new vacuum for Mother's Day!!!:rotfl2:

Everyone and every couple is different. If she is happy and she obviously is, then that is all that matters. My husband and I tend to be "practical" gift type people. I have gotten pots and pans for Christmas and I love them!! I have also given my husband tools, work bench, chain saw etc.. as presents in the past. Personally, if I had a choice between expensive jewelry or something for the house, I would pick something for the house.... Everyone is different. Just be happy for her. :)

We're the same way here. I bought my husband a new leaf blower for his birthday back in the fall and he loves it. For Christmas we've bought microwaves, dishes, silverware, new items for the bathrooms, etc.

I also like practical gifts, so I'd probably be happy. The only reason I'd be unhappy about it is if my old vacuum was perfectly good or DH bought one that I thought cost too much money!

DH knows I really don't enjoy getting gifts so we usually go out to dinner or plan a family outing. My favorite gifts are usually experiences or practical things I specifically asked for. I'm not a big "thing" person, don't wear jewelry, allergic to flowers and perfume.

DH likes practical gifts too, so we're both on the same page. We're just as likely the get the vacuum for his birthday or Father's Day.

I have sons, so we've been very careful to make sure they know that I'm unusual in my gift aversion!

Given that I loathe vacuuming, do not particularly consider vacuuming my responsibility any more than his, and he know that appliances of drudgery aren't gifts, he'd know better.

I had my husband buy me a vacuum for Mother's day last year because I bought a Kirby that was $800. I had to make a gift out of it because if he was just going to buy me some cheap ole vacuum cleaner or even a Dyson it would have been 3 or 4 hundred dollars not 800.

I usually tell him not to even get me anything for Valentine's day or Mother's day but when I wanted that high dollar vacuum I asked for it as a gift.

I'm not husbands mother I don't expect him to buy me anything. So i'm in the group of it would be fine! :)

I am a very practical girl. I like gadgets and such and don't care for jewelry or flowers.

If I had asked for a dyson, I would be happy I got one. However, my request would probably have included a free year of vacuuming by said husband along with the machine!

This year for my B-day (2 weeks ago) I asked for a Tivo with lifetime service. I was very happy to get it. It is practical and will last a long time.

I would never attempt giving my wife a vacuum on Mother's Day ...although I wouldn't be opposed to a new lawn mower on Father's Day . Funny how that works

How would I feel about it? I would be wondering why my husband is buying me a Mother's Day gift when I'm not his mother!

I wouldn't just be wondering I would have said something. Even if the child is a 2yr old, dad should have taken her to the store and let her pick something. At that age my DD would have picked flowers and DS would have choosen candy "to share" LOL.

If DH brought home a vacuum I wanted for no reason he would have gotten major brownie points from me.

I love practical gifts myself. My favs have been a kitchen aid mixer. Raised flower beds in the backyard built by DH and both kids. The best gift ever was this past Christmas DH and DS turned the basement storage room into a sunny yellow sewing room for me after DD spent days empting it out.

Depends on the person who is getting the gift.

I personally would hate it but I'm not a huge fan of cooking, cleaning, etc. I do what needs to be done but I don't get any enjoyment out of it. Anyone giving me cooking or cleaning supplies/gadgets would get a dirty look.

My mother on the other hand, loves stuff like that. Her favorite Christmas gift was her Kitchen Aid pedestal mixer. She does appreciate jewelry but she doesn't wear it all that often so household gadgets are better gifts for her.

The point of a gift IMO is to get something that you know the receiver is going to love. Since your friend obviously loved her vacuum, her husband knows her well and did a good job picking out a gift.

Your mother was completely out of line as far as I'm concerned but at 80 years old there is no telling her that I'm sure. My grandmother is 90 and she would have said something similar if she felt that way and been completely oblivious to the fact that she was being rude.

I wouldn't have a problem with it. We got a Dyson several years ago. DH loves it so much that HE does all the vacuuming now. :goodvibes
May be a nice way of suggesting that your DH take over the cleaning chores since he liked the vacuum enough to buy it. I've been married for 40 yrs. My DH loves to clean, handles the laundry, etc. I am getting the best Mother's Day gift ever- this year... a trip to WDW ...2 weeks and counting:love:

Well, seeing as how the next one I purchase will be over $1,000 (Rainbow), I would love to have one for mother's day. I am also the type that would rather have something useful, than just something else to dust around.

I just posted on my facebook page that I finally got around to ordering a leaf blower to replace the one that I received for Christmas 2 years ago that the carburetor blew up on during the first use in the spring.
DH's sister about had a fit. :rotfl:

As I replied to her. That is what I wanted. Would rather receive something that makes my life easier than something that will sit on a shelf or something I will not use.

A friend of mine posted a pic on Facebook of the new vacuum her DH had bought her for Mother's Day. I was raised in a home, where if my Dad had given my Mom housewares he would have slept outside. Housewares were not a gift, they were a purchase that was made for the home. My DH would never by me a vacuum as a gift.

I must admit, that when I saw the pic of the vacuum, I thought to myself, "How awful" but I dare not post . My mother on the other hand is now 80 and has lost much of her filter. Apparently, she's FB friends with my friend. She posted exactly what she thought of that vacuum! While I agreed with my Mom's sentiment, I had to cringe when I saw her post.

well.....................

I asked for ....,more like pleaded for my very own lawn mower cause I wanted the exercise and was tired of forking over money weekly for my lawn service each week....The dh thought I was NUTS.....he finally caved and I got to pick it out....I was thrilled....truly..:goodvibes
Crazy, right???? Whats that saying...whatever makes you tick :rotfl2:.

I pretty much have a dh that has always gotten me what I wanted or needed so that was never an issue..........
he tells everyone that he got it for me, just to see their faces....
And me....well.....Im just HAPPY to have it and enjoy doing it :thumbsup2

well bless you both...and have a great trip!!!

Just wondering why those who say they want practical gifts like housewares think that other gift are dust collectors or wasteful. My Dh takes me shopping to pick out clothes, or sends me away for a girls weekend, etc. These are things I would never do for myself. (When we met, I was 24 and was still wearing clothes I owned in HS, not cause I didn't have money, but because I just never shop for myself.). He reminds me that I need to be pampered on occasion.

Probably for the same reason you do not like practical gifts...they do not get enjoyment out of them.

Not everyone like clothes or jewelry and for them shopping can be similar to going to the dentist. Trinkets can be lovely gifts for some but for others all it is is another item they have to keep clean.

It is all based on personality and when giving a gift it is best to go with the receivers personality.

It's not that I don't like vacuums, they serve a great purpose. I just think the idea of giving your wife a vacuum as a present is kind of insulting. The vacuum is for the entire household's benefit, it's not really for the recipient.
