Ok, ONE word...............WHY!?
One word: FASHION.

That was what was in fashion at the time that I wore them in the 80's. BEFORE I was a mom *or* fat. Everyone, down to the skinniest celebrity, wore them. Don't laugh too hard. What goes around comes around in the fashion industry and soon enough the trendy people will be back in high waisted jeans (I have already seen waists going higher from the 70's-type waist) and you will be buying them too :rotfl:. What has been fashionable for the past 10 years will become the new "mom jeans".

There's a large middle ground between ultra lowrise and mom jeans.

EXACTLY!!! :thumbsup2 We ALL wore those high rise, tapered leg jeans in the 80s, those were the fashion. NOW...not so much. But who knows if they will really become "IN" again? There have been some designers who have tried.

I was completely appalled when the lower rise, hip hugger thing came back in many years ago...that was the style when I was a teen! But I soon discovered how COMFORTABLE that style really is! I now longer can STAND anything tight around my waist (and pantyhose went into the trash along with this, when they went out of style)...and I'm pushing 50. I do NOT wear low low jeans, just a bit below the waist, and I'm not overweight, so no muffin top. I consider this MY comfort fit at 49! ;)

There are TONS of styles in between the booty showing and the ultra-high waist. To each her own! :)

But- I would like to add this b/c I keep trying to explain this to MIL. Stacy and Clinton say, which I agree, wear the jeans that come just at your belly button if you have a tummy b/c the waistband acts like a "girdle" to keep the pooch from popping out like it does when people wear "high rise" jeans.:thumbsup2

My dear, I'd love to -- but AFAICT, there are no such jeans currently made in my size (an 18WP, btw -- I have a 28 inseam and a waist height that is proportionally short). I had found some that were close, but they were too light in color to be truly current, though I bought them anyway. Alas, those are now discontinued, too.

These days, the only things I can find that fit my hips gape at least 6 inches at the waist, and sometimes up to nearly a foot. At Old Navy I tried an experiment once: I had taken one of their soccerballs into the dressing room to amuse the toddler, and I decided to see if I could fit the thing into the back of the jeans waistband, and I COULD!!! It stayed there all by itself, loosely basketed in the back of the jeans. These were jeans that were "lowrise" and supposed to be my size, but the waistband hit just below my belly button, instead of 4 inches further south. However, since it wasn't supposed to hit that high, the gape at the waistband was massive. I've sewn for a living -- no pair of jeans is worth that much work to alter.

That is the absolute truth! In the 80's we, in our oh-so-fashionable high waist tappered leg jeans, made fun of those still stuck in their 1970's hip-hugging bell bottoms. Who knew? :confused3

I'm a mom of three...but I'm only 31 and refuse to be out of fashion and when it comes to jeans...those are my spurge.... Seven, Citizens of Humanity, etc.... they just look better

:thumbsup2 So true, so true.

MHO is that we should change with the times. While a 40+ yo woman probably shouldn't wear the same jeans as a 20yo, she can wear something more up to date and flattering than "mom jeans". JMHO. Mom jeans are at the worst with a tucked in shirt. At least a shirt on the outside covers that waist band.

but why? Because her self-esteem might be at risk if she doesen't conform to peer pressure? I'm sorry but I reject that. Go back to my pictures....I'm wearing Mom jeans. I will do it again, I don't care.

Can someone please shoot me if I am ever caught in any of these?

I have mom jeans and I have more fashionable jeans. If I am wearing a long shirt or sweater, I wear mom jeans because they are more comfortable. If I wear a shirt that is tucked in, I wear lower cut jeans. My waist is smaller than my hips and the lower cut jeans ride lower and lower as the day goes on and they start to slip off my hips. I know the obvious solution is to use a belt, but sometimes I don't want to wear a belt and with jeans that sit above the belly button, I don't have to. Also, I notice more gapping in the back with the lower cut jeans and I hate those gaps where you can see people's underwear.

I wear the newer jeans too and I gotta say, I'm so freakin' tired of my back hanging out the back of these jeans when I stoop down or bend over or whatever.

I have a fairly straight, boyish figure (I don't have a tiny waist or anything) and ALL of these jeans gap on me so bad. I never even owned a belt until this low-rise crap came out. Now I have to wear a belt and it looks so bad and clunky with whatever shirt I have on. YUCK! I don't ever want to wear mom jeans (I look MOM enough these days without them) but I'm just so sick of the pants they have out these days.

I'm with you. I have no self-worth tied up in the type of jeans I wear. I wear what I like and what I am comfortable it. THAT makes me feel good. I don't care if it's a style from last week or last decade. As long as it's clean, neat and something I like all is good with me. If someone else doesn't like what I wear, that's OK. I feel just as good about myself as if they were ripping it off me to wear it themselves. And, just for the record, I have just returned from a church service where I wore mom jeans and no one seemed to notice or care. :hippie:

Try Levis 515 Petite Short. Not plain old Petite or plain old Short, but Petite Short. You may have to hunt for them. I think they may come in up to an 18. I wear these because I am short with short legs and don't want to have to pay a fortune to alter jeans. They hit me a little below my belly button, but not too low rise. I don't have to get them hemmed.

The old saying refers to ugly things coming back in style- You learn from your mistakes!:rotfl:

I say, been there, done that- do NOT want to go back and do it again. If the young kids want to try it for the first time, fine. The rest of us should leave it alone:rotfl2:

I say this for the guys as well as us girls- buy BOOT CUT jeans for crying out loud. I hate that "bunch" at the top of the shoe. Boot cut jeans just lay nicely at the top of the shoe and look so much nicer and neater.

If my high self esteem is b/c I like my jeans- then I am guilty. I do not feel like there is something wrong with that. Who doesn't get an extra boost when you put something nice on and KNOW you look nice. :confused3 I do not count on my jeans to make me happy- but the way I look plays a small part in all of it.

I really don't care that much what other people think of the jeans I wear. I wear what's most comfortable, and if that's mom jeans, then so be it. I'm not trying to impress anyone, I'm just going for comfort.

I feel the same way about my grandma jeans. I must be in the minority but to be honest I never pay attention to what anyone wears. It would have to be beyond ugly or beyond beautiful for me to even notice. And if it wasn't for the DIS I would have no idea what CROCS are because I never look at anyone's feet.

I'm 40 and fat. I wear mom jeans because they feel comfortable.
:lmao:
omg....we do what we have to do!!!!!
it's like my shirts too. i go in walmart or somewhere similar and when i find a shirt that fits right and is cheap, i buy it in every color they have!!! :lmao:
