My neighbor took a 185 lb doe. He brought us over a shoulder roast...I have no clue how to cook the thing??:confused3 Can I put it in a cooking bag with veggies and cook it all day like I would a beef roast???

I won't eat the thing, but I am going to make it for our superbowl party for the guys.

Suggestions please!!

being a good hunter myself......I love venison and moose and any critter......Put the roast in a baggie or do the tent with foil.......put a pkg of lipton onion soup mix with one cup of water and a can of cream of mushroom soup and mix it together and pour over the roast......cook it on 325 for whatever poundage it is......Please try a piece too....YOU may like it....
venison and moose is just a very lean meat and you will be surprised how it is like a beef without alot of fat

Our family always cooks venison just like we do beef.

And pumba is right - venison is very lean!:thumbsup2

The bad and the soup mixes are a great idea. Venison takes lots of moisturizers and tenderizers because it has little fat and deer get more excersize than cows(muscle). Google Ted Nugent and see if he has any recipes online. He's got a cookbook out.

I don't :crazy2: But I know a lot of people really like it. I have tried it and I just don't care for it, you really should try at least a bit.

Oh no someone killed Bambi and now you dont even know how to cook him?

My aunt coats it with Italian dressing and bakes it in the oven. Be sure and remove all the white membrane off the outside of the roast. Removing it will cut back on the "gamey" taste.

AGHHH, im not a fan of the italian dressing method. I used to swear I hated dear meat but once had it without the italian dressing and figured out that was what i hated !!!

My hubby marinates it in Italian dressing overnight. Then he cooks it until tender like a beef roast. When it's cooking,I have to leave the house because I don't like game. My kids love it though.

LOL :rotfl: Ok in my own defense...I didn't ASK for the thing, it was given to us after the fact...I would have been fine and dandy without it but DH is now in 7th Heaven and has a list started of who is coming for dinner on Bambi, I mean , venison night.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

Um, does it smell bad :confused3 or is it just and anti-game cooking thing? I don't want to stink up the house..lol Maybe I will need a shopping day that day?!

Wrap it with thick bacon(use toothpicks to hold the bacon on) and smoke it until it reaches 145-155 degrees. I would use hickory or peacan wood. Slice it thin and serve on crackers with a bit of spicy mustard as a snack during the game.

I think it's just me because no one else complains.

OOOOhh I like this idea because it sounds like it might be DH's kind of thing..He can fix it and I won't even have to deal with it (I"m not an adventurous eater and just the thought of having to deal with Bambi's kin isn't really all that appealing to me in the first place) LOL This one might be a definite possibility!!

I was just teasing. The Italian Marinade isnt bad.

It's not just you :( My Dad was a big hunter and would expect my Mom to cook it periodically, She and I were like "why"? The only way that I could tolerate it was to take the tenderloin, beat the crap out of it to tenderize it, soak it in white milk and batter and fry it. Had worcestershire sauce in the marinade too. SHe also made stew and chili (from the ground meat). The roasts definitely need moist heat or they'll be worse than leather.

Be aware this may take 10-12 hours. I would smoke it the day before and chill it over night. I think the smoked meat tastes better cold. If you try it, I hope you enjoy it :thumbsup2

We cook our deer roasts just like we would a beef or pork roast(with potatoes and carrots and a gravy.

We also use alot of the ground deer and use it for tacos, spaghetti, chili, hamburger steak, and anything else you would use regular hamburger for.

My step daughter just found out a few weeks ago that most of the meals she has eaten when visiting us were made out of deer meat...which before learning this she had commented about how wonderful our meals are...and shortly before that she said she would never ever eat deer meat!!! I LOVED telling her that she has had deer meat MANY MANY times!!!!!
