How do you clean your duvet?

We had someone staying with us for 4 months who took the cover off of our duvet and slept with a naked duvet (ICK!) Now it smells like dirty man and it has mysterious yellow spots all over it. I want to burn the thing but the sensible part of me says it can be cleaned. So, does anyone have any duvet washing experience/tips that they can share with me, detergent? bleach? dryer? etc? Thanks in advance!

We always take ours to the cleaners and have them do it; I wouldn't want to risk ruining it myself!

Take it to the cleaners. Or, wash it in a large capacity washer and dry it with tennis balls (to help keep all the stuffing from lumping up.)

That is really gross that he took the cover off... if it was mine, I'd pitch it and get a new one. Macy's has great home sales on really nice duvets all the time...

You don't have to tell me it's gross. I said that the first time I saw that he was sleeping with a neekid duvet! BUT.... it was the boyfriends friend so I had to play nice :guilty:

I have been washing my down comforter in the machine at least twice a year for 10 years now and it is still as good as new. You just have to make sure and get it good and dry....tennis balls and go in there and rotate it every 20 minutes. I've never used bleach though, but use hot water and high on the dryer.

I take mine to the dry cleaners. Just check it is OK to do so on the tag on the duvet. They do a great job. My machine isn't big enough to take my queen size duvets, unfortunately.

We have a king size duvet and I wash and dry mine at home about every 4 months and haven't had any problems. I agree with the PP about using hot water & getting it really dry. DH and I also hold it by the corners and give it good shakes when it's done to fluff it up.

Should have said, it's down filled, double/full size, it's a fairly light duvet as far as they go. And i checked the tag, unfortunately all it says is "Contains new materials only" in about 8 different languages....

Into the washing machine it goes!!!! I guess we'll have to wait and see how it goes.

Just in case anyone cared to know how it went....

I washed the duvet last night, twice on the delicate cycle with regular old Cheer. The water was still pretty skanky after the first wash so i figured "what the heck?" Dried it in the drier with a tennis ball (thanks for the tip!) and it's all clean and fluffy and smells like CLEAN laundry instead of dirty man.

Thanks for the help folks! You saved me a trip to the bedding store and however much money those things cost. :goodvibes

I have a front loader with a sanatize cycle - that's what you need with a little bleach if it's white.

I always wash my down blankets in the washing machine with a little bleach and dry! I have a dry clean only king comforter that I need to take to the cleaners (Thanks Lobo!). Any idea what the cost of dry cleaning a comforter runs?

Are the yellow spots gone?

Personally I would have given it to him after discovering the mystery spots. Yuck.

Yellow spots are gone. I don't even want to think about what it was, we're not talking urine yellow here.....

I'm not giving this guy ANYTHING else ever again. He couldn't even be bothered to "give" us rent money, or food money or move his feet while i vacuumed around him as he surfed the internet we paid for. I'm just glad he (and the mysterious yellow spots) are gone.

(Wow, i sure sound bitter, really I'm not always like this!)

I recently took my non-down king comforter to the dry cleaners and it cost $25 - however, it shrunk and they "weren't responsible".

Some laundromats will wash/dry your comforters for you - I seem to recall paying around $15 awhile back...

We wash our down duvet in our washer every 2-3 months and then dry it in the dryer. Always comes our nice. I hate the duvet covers, they add too much weight.
