How do you clean up after a male cat who has sprayed?

My male young cat has started spraying in the past 2 days!!! UGH!

He is scheduled to be neutered on Thurs, but my house STINKS today. What is the best solution to clean up the spots we find and to clean our carpets?

I work during the day and can't watch him all the time, should I lock him in a room with a litter box until Thurs to contain the spraying to a room (without carpet?!)

I'd call the vet and try to get him in earlier. Seriously, that stuff is hard to clean. When I had two males do it at the same time, we threw away everything and ripped up the floor.

Vinegar, or a product called "Nature's Miracle". It's sold at all the Petcos and Petsmarts.

Nature's Miracle or Simple Solution may work. Since NM changed the formula I think Simple Solution is more effective.

Here is a (cheaper) home made recipe:

Blot up as much as you can.

Now apply a 50/50 solution of white vinegar and water. Let it soak in and blot it up again. (Put an old towel on the carpet and stand on it to blot!)

Rub in baking soda thoroughly and sprinkle with 3% Hydrogen peroxide* (it will fizz) and let dry. Vaccuum up baking soda.

* Warning Always test the carpet in an unobtrusive spot for color-fastness before using the Hydrogen Peroxide. The baking soda alone also works.

And have that guy fixed.

I don't care what anybody suggests. Rip out the flooring/carpet/whatever and replace. And get the cat neutered ASAP!

Cat urine is toxic!

Just so you know, neutering won't necessarily stop him from spraying. I had a male neutered cat that sprayed until the day he died(19 years). He mainly sprayed my DH's clothes(you would think DH would have learned to put his dirty clothes in the hamper after 19 years). Easy to wash(with vinegar) or just throw away if it was really bad.

It is Urine Destroyer from Nature's Miracle. Her cat peed on her son's bedding and she was sure it was ruined, but she used this and said you can't smell it at all anymore. Just make sure you test for colorfastness. If you read the reviews that is the only real complaint about it.

If you can't get him to the vet any sooner, I would lock him up in a bathroom. That way any urine he does spray can be cleaned up. And in all honesty, I would probably borrow a large dog crate to keep him in whenever I can't watch him 100% of the time. Preferably an airline crate that has solid sides and can easily be washed.

The products that some of the posters mentioned works great. But I have a super sniffer and can still smell a slight odor even when it has been cleaned.

Spaying might not stop that problem once it starts. But I do know someone that had his male spayed after he started spraying and he only did it once after that. You really want to get a male spayed before he matures which is between 5 and 6 months. Most vets say at 4 months. I know of a friend that had to actually tear up the flooring in a house they bought because of cat urine.
