How do you clean the jetted tubs before use?

Here is exactly why I always clean before using. We were staying in a RCI timeshare in FL with my sister and her kids. My nephew was 6 at the time and significantly autistic. He was having a bad week and one of the few things that calmed him was swimming or the huge jet tub they had in the condo. He was having a tub and playing happily, I was right there putting away laundry I looked over and there was all this brown foam. That's right, Code Brown in the Tub!!! It was super gross and had been going on for a few minutes. We had bleach so of course we cleaned it and ran the bleach though it several times. I feel we got it all clean
over the next couple days. But everytime I see a tub like that I wonder who did what in it, and what if the people didn't clean it as well as we did.

We always use an entire small bottle of bleach & we fill the tub above the jets & let it run for about 15 mins. We almost always get some black gunk out of the jets when we do that. Then we run rinse & run it again before we let anyone use it. I don't think mousekeeping ever does a great job on the bathroom floors so I doubt they are cleaning the tubs very good. I also pull the blankets down the beds to make sure the sheets are spotless & I always clean any dish or glassware before I use it too, so I guess you could say I'm a germaphobe! :magnify:

I never thought about cleaning them in the past - I will most certainly do sow now though! Thanks for the tips.

So basically either Bleach or Dishwashing detergent should do it.... Good to know!

as I have never had a jetted tub - where do you put the detergent? just in the water while it is running or is there a special place for it like a dishwasher?

If you do not do a grocery order, is there a place on-site to purchase bleach?

For those of you who don't clean the jetted tubs before using them...please start.

As an a/c, heating and plumbing professional I have first hand experiance in what you will find in the jets and associated piping:scared1:

The cleaning has been covered here for the most part: First use "HOT" water only. Allow the tub to fill above the jets by about 1", add 1/2 cup bleach and 1/2 cup dishwasher detergent, (not dishwahing soap) allow the water to circulate 15-20 minutes starting and stopping the pump a few times during the circulation, (this helps dislodge a lot of extra "GUNK") drain the tub and refill above the jets again and allow water only to circulate 5-10 minutes, drain and your done.

This effectivly cleans the jets, piping and pump impeller. :yay:

To the poster who doesn't run the tub due to "bubble" problems. I've never had a problem using dishwasher detergent (not liquid or soap), if the pump and jets are not on you're only cleaning the tub surface.:sad2:

This is a good question. I looked on the grocery order form for SSR and no laundry items were listed. I know that you can purchase laundry detergent at the resort laundry area, but I am not sure about bleach.

I forgot to buy bleach last time we were at SSR & there was none in the gift shop. There were small containers of laundry detergent, but no bleach.

Ugh. This makes me sick to think of all the gunk in the jets! I have never used them because I just can't relax soaking in a strange tub. I think if I clean it per the instructions above, I might enjoy a relaxing soak.

Thanks for posting the instructions!

I usually stay in a studio, but I will be staying in a 1 bedroom this summer, and will be using the bleach and dishwasher detergent to clean the tub. DISboards are a great source of information.
