How do you clean/sanitize a water dispenser?

I have one of those large water dispensers that you usually rent from a water supplier, but I haven't used it in over a year. It's pretty dirty inside and I am not sure how to go about cleaning it. I think I remember reading something about bleach, but how can that be safe?? Does anyone have any suggestions??

when I called the water supplier for ours, they said to run a few cups of bleach through it followed by a few gallons of water.......worked great...

Just make sure the few gallons is like 10 or so LOL
