My dd isnt wearing her retainer like she should:rolleyes2
When I lectured her about all the $$ i paid for braces , she said the retainers smell. She brushes the retainer but i guess it still has a smell. The othro office told her just to brush it. Is there an over the counter product that can be used to clean it and to get smell out?? Is she suppose to be soaking the retainer?? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hawling retainer are metal and with plastic sections

Both my kids wear a retainer at night. In the morning they put it in their container in the bathroom and I pour hydrogen peroxide over it and put the lid on it. So yes, I soak it all day in that. They rinse or brush it before putting it in.
I have been during this for years and there is no smell. Maybe that may help.

I soak mine in denture cleaner while I get ready in the morning. I rinse them at the end of my routine and put them in the case. Mine are all plastic though. Maybe ask your Ortho? That's what they told me to use...

My son & I both have retainers we wear at night. (I had braces for 4 years as a kid then wisdom teeth came in crooked! So braces again for a year as an adult) We both soak them in Denture cleaner all day. I've never noticed a smell.

I had an appliance made for TMJ, it had metal on it and I soaked it in Efferdent. I used it for years without any problem from soaking it, I would let it soak all day after brushing it and rinse it off and use it every night.

She just got her braces off last month so she has to wear it 24/7 for a year. SHe said when she takes it off at lunchtime at school thats when it smells so she ends up leaving it off . Then she gets home and she doesnt remember to put it back in:confused3 So something she can do a quick soak 10-15 min

We use a product called Retainer Brite. Soak for 15 min then rinse. Found it on amazon.

any brand of denture cleaner will do. We use Walmarts brand for my daughters retainer and husbands bite guard.

Both kids wear a retainer at night. Every few days they soak it in denture cleaner. The ortho recommended it as opposed to the retainer bright stuff which was a lot more than a box of efferdent.

Wow I had the same exact thing happen. Braces for 4/5 years then wisdom teeth and braces again for a year

I use efferdent, DS's ortho stressed to only use lukewarm water, not hot, though.

I soak mine in half water half white vinegar. I saw it on Pinterest and it works excellent. I left mine in to soak several hours

Its her spit drying on it that smells. It happened with my tongue guard and my toothguards. If she can get to the bathroom and rinse it with mouthwash before lunch it should help. Then its just a matter of her forming the habit of remembering to put it back in.

Yep, denture cleaner is what was recommended to us by both our dentist and orthodontist and it works great. I just use whatever store brand is on sale at the time. With 3 of us in retainers here, I need something cheap and effective!

I wear the plastic Vivera retainers (post invisaline) and I try to avoid brushing them as much as possible. My ortho said that brushing them scratches the plastic which makes it susceptible to holding more bacteria (which makes it smell.) I usually let them sit in denture cleaner, rinse them, and brush only if really needed.

I'd be very tempted to leave the retainer at home during the school day. Talk to your orthodontist. If she wears it 16x5 and then 24x2 that is better than not wearing it, and its way better than her throwing out her retainer with lunch (which happens all the time). My ortho NEVER makes kids wear a retainer 24x7 simply because of the lunch tray issues - too many lost retainers that are expensive, and after a few, the retainer just doesn't get replaced because the parents can't afford endless retainers.
