How do you burn home fragrance oil?

Home fragrance oil was on sale at B&BW for $3, so I picked up several. Now comes the fun part-I don't know how to use it! The clerk said to put it in a tart burner, so I did that. She said to just put the oil in the top, but it burnt so fast that now I put a bunch of water and then about 12 drops of the oil. That seems kind of strong, though, so maybe I should cut back? Is it usually a matter of playing with the oil/water mix until you find the right strength or is there a "typical" amount?

I have several Body Shop home fragrance oils that I love to use. I have lamp rings--they are ceramic (I think) and sit on top of a light bulb. When the lamp is one, it heats the ring and the scent is stronger (I only use 3-4 drops when doing that). I've actually dropped some oil directly onto lightbulbs too but I don't know if that is entirely safe:rolleyes1 I also use them as car air fresheners. I put several cotton balls into a small plastic cup and sprinkle the oil over the cotton (probably about a 12 drops). I put the the cup in the cup holder and my car smells nice:thumbsup2

I've tried the burners as you have described and I've never been too happy with the results.

I've done this too. Maybe we're nuts!

I have an oil burner from the Body Shop. It's the basic kind in which you drop quite a few drops into the top and light a tea light under it. Within minutes, this thing fills the whole room with fragrance. I love it.

I've read that you're not supposed to mix the HFO with water, I guess because they don't mix and the oil would separate and then create a fire hazard. The way I've always used them is in a tart/oil burner, adding probably about 10 drops at a time, which generally lets it burn for maybe an hour or so. You can add more drops as needed (and you'll know when it's needed because it'll start to smell a little overdone or burnt). One other alternative is to use a lamp ring; I know Hobby Lobby carries them. They're ceramic, rest on top of a lightbulb, and have a groove in them to hold the oil. It still releases the fragrance quite well but isn't as dangerous as putting the oil directly on the hot lightbulb (which I also used to do all the time :rolleyes1 ...I also found out that it makes the lightbulb a sticky, nasty mess if you put the oil directly on it and then it "cooks" there, you know? )

I have the one with the tea light also....Use it all the time in fact I just bought a pack of 100 candles for a dollar at the dollar store

I am burning the oil right now (from B&BW), I have a tart warmer that I put a tealight under. My oil lasts a long time, maybe it doesn't burn as hot as yours?

I buy the tealights in huge bags because they do tend to burn quickly.

What scents did you get?

I bought Pineapple, Juicy orange, pineapple mango, and vanilla coconut. I guess what made me think I must be doing something wriong is that although I usually love pineapple stuff from B&BW, I don't like the pineapple. But when I mix the pineapple with the vanilla coconut (sort of like a pina colada)-boy, does that smell good!

thats what I use....

I have also mixed with water. I have a old pot(small that holds about 2 cups water.) that I put about 1 cup of water and heat the water to a boil than drop about 5 drops of oil in it and as the water evaporates it adds scent into the air.

The vanilla coconut is my fave scent right now - have it going right now, actually!

I have about 15 of the oil bottles from B&BW. My favorite this month is Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin and I mix in a few drops of straight Pumpkin to make it more pumpkiny! Yummy!! The Apple is pretty wonderful too.
I have so many burners and oil collected I take turns lending them to my neighbors.:lmao: There is no way I could use them all up.
I also have no clue whey I bought so many fruity, tropical summary fragrances. It is WAY too hot to actually burn anything here during the summer. I swear some days I was convinced I was going to have my very own Biblical Burning Bush in my backyard.
