How do you attach holiday greenery or garland to the bannister?

In every December decorator magazine you see these lovely staircases decorated for the holidays with swags of lovely greenry and/or garland...sometimes even lit! I can never figure out how folks attach it to the bannister. DH has used fishing line and I swear some day one of us is going to slice a finger open because of it. What's the secret??? :confused3

Well, I've used thin green wire (florist wire, I guess) - but I'm sure there are folks with better ideas!

We use plastic zip ties - they come in a variety of colors.

I remember a thread about this last year, and there were some really good suggestions - like ribbon, and some others I can't remember.

I use that ribbon that has fine wires on each side. Use a color that compliments your decorations - finish with a pretty bow. Easy to make & holds it shape well because of the wire.

I wrap mine around the banister and it stays in place pretty well. I secure it at the top with a ziptie. I would love to have it lit but there isn't a convenient outlet.

Floral wire and dark green zipties, whichever I had handy at the time.

Good ideas...thanks. In the magazines, you never see ANYTHING supporting the garland. (Of course, if it's not a real home, they could use a staple gun and it wouldn't matter.) It's sort of like those ads for computer desks where they show all these electronics without a single cord coming out of anything.

We've been doing this for years. We use strips of dark green yarn - usually doubled up. Its strong enough to hold each swag. We chose yarn because of it's strength and it's soft...we didn't want to harm the finish on our wooden hand railings by using plastic strips or wire. We simply tie the yarn in a double bow knot (like you would with your shoelaces) and tuck it within the bough strands and then bend other bough strands around the yarn as much as possible to hid the yarn in general. Hope that helps.

I just bought a roll of 1/2 inch wide green velcro at Lowes. You cut the size you need to secure the garland and it is reusable. It costs just under $3.00 and was located in the christmas section. I hope it works.

dark green zipties last year. worked the best of any year. hope to find them again.

Very carefully and use hot glue.

Well before I had a banister will spindles I used to use any of the following.

Hot Glue
Push Pins (don't work so well with the kids around)
and yes the first two years dh used the staple gun!

Now I just loop it around the banister every other spindle or so.

GREAT idea, i'm going to try i! THANKS!

Yes, I have a lovely garland that my floral designer friend made for me, and it is lit.

However, I cannot put up or attach the thing to my bannister

She comes over each year to put it up for me and she uses a part of the garland that are like wire twist ties but they're decorative with little white buds at the end. I have no idea what they are or they're called.
Sorry, fat lot of help I am  :confused3

Some of them have wire built right in so you can twist it and it stays in place.
