How do you ask for an upgrade?

Followup question: if you do online check-in before you arrive, does that hurt your chances for being given an upgrade?

We were upgraded but didn't ask for it.

Other threads have said there's no real difference on upgrades when it comes to checking in online. It's luck of the draw with the circumstances that make it necessary for the resort to upgrade you.

27+ trips..NEVER an upgrade and I have traveled Peak times, Slow times and average times..heck I barely have gotten any of my room requests either.

 Sorry - don't mean to laugh at you...more like WITH you. This is totally us. We have been a lot..all different times of the year...all different levels of resorts..and have never been upgraded. We have never asked and have no plans to ask.. I may be odd, but the thought of even asking for an upgrade makes me feel really uncomfortable. The good news... I book the category we want so we are always happy with the room we get. :)

I think we were upgraded and I didn't realize it until just now, we are leaving Dec14-21 and when I was on the phone making our reservations the cm asked me what resort I said value she offered me a room at CSR at a good price package wise so I said okay, we love that resort and it was a great bargain, our stay 14-21 quick service dining and park hoppers for $2052.00 she then asked me what kind of room do we like to stay in and I said we don't care about the room or location , we are there to sleep so it didn't matter , she said well I'm giving you a preferred water view location room. So is this the ever alluded upgrades I hear about?...lol I was just happy I'm going to Disney and never even thought about it until now! if it is I feel like a big DUH right now!

For those of you have had your room upgraded at check in, did you ask? How would you ask?

I wouldn't ask unless I was prepared to pay for it.

That said, we've been upgraded from standard to courtyard view at WL and standard to water view at YC, both without asking.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I am willing to pay for it. Savannah views were not available when we made the resi. I guess my biggest concern was not coming across as rude or greedy. I will be at Disney after all so I have nothing to complain about :thumbsup2

Keep checking. When I made our AK reservations a few years ago, we needed 3 rooms. There was no Savanna rooms available. I checked back every few days, and all of a sudden, there they were! I bet if you do that, you will get it! :thumbsup2:thumbsup2

Laugh away:lmao: We always do..I don't ask for upgrades and I don't expect them either. We generally book the category we want and that's about it.I have made room requests, and only once have gotten them .As long as my room is clean and not looking at a smelly, fly infested dumpster,It's all good:rotfl2:

I've also heard that if you pay for an upgrade at the desk you may end up paying full rack rate for the upgraded category (i.e. you lose any discounts you had on your room rate before the upgrade)--so if you're sure you want the upgraded category, you should try to do it before you arrive at the hotel. FWIW we've been to Disney 6 times over the past 20 years and have never been upgraded for free (although we've always loved our rooms!).

I booked us for 1 night at the Yacht Club a few years ago right after a Disney cruise. I think it must have been late summer and it was something we don't normally do. We were upgraded to the concierge level from a standard room (I think) upon check in. It was a nice surprise and we enjoyed the pixie dust aka Mickey Magic.
Good luck-Elizabeth

We were booked at Bay Lake Towers for our first trip with our then little ones (DS's second birthday and DD was 3 at the time, also had DD 13 at that time too) and when I booked the trip I didn't really understand "magic kingdom view". After reading about it on these boards I really wanted that MK view but when I called Disney none were available. When we went to check in DH mentioned that we would love a MK view b/c our kids were little and at least we could watch the fireworks from our room. He even offered to pay for the upgrade. The CM upgraded us to a 1 bedroom/2bath suite on the 14th floor of the CR (concierge level). It was amazing! Best first trip the little ones could have asked for! This was at the end of October and typically it is a "slow" time.

We were bumped from 12 th floor CL to that suite one year during Memorial Day weekend. Four nights in that suite really spoiled us!

We just got back from a stay at POR. I originally booked a standard view room but was given a water view room on a corner. I didn’t ask specifically for an upgrade.

When checking in we were told our room was in the Magnolia Bend section of POR but we really wanted to be in Alligator Bayou. I asked if we could be moved to a building in Alligator Bayou. They were able to find a room for us in AB, it turned out to be an upgraded room. That’s all I did to get upgraded.

That is correct. If you ask for an upgrade at check-in, they will quote you the rack rate and you will lose your discount.

I have been going to Disney almost every year since 2000 and I was upgraded last year for the first time. I paid for a waterview room at POR and requested Oak Manor near the pool. It is the location I ask for the last couple of years.

This year, I was told I was in Parterre Place. I was slightly upset about it and the CM winked at me and said, "We are going to switch it up a bit this year" after I commented about my request.

Imagine my surprise when I get to my room later that afternoon. Corner room, king bed, river view. I was so excited, I went back up to that CM and gave her a big thumbs up!

I think it proves the point, if you ask for an upgrade, you will be quoted the price - if you don't, they MAY sprinkle some pixie dust on you.
