How Do We Feel About This One?? (Vaccine Related)

Then just skip over it - if you're not interested in the topic you're not required to open the thread.

We've had two off topic vaccine threads going today, so I wanted to get the opinions of the moms who had already been discussing the subject.

And no, there isn't a Debate Board anymore. The Community Board would be the closest thing, but again, Budget Board moms are the ones who've been discussing it today.

I agree-it kills me when people comment on the inappropriate posting of a thread, BUT they open it and read it.
That being said-its budget related when your 2 year old is hospitalized with severe dehydration related to rotavirus and you have to miss work, spend extra $$ on child care for your other child and incur a $4500 hospital bill that you are responsible for 20% of.

All it takes is a parent not washing his/her hands after changing a diaper (yes, gross I know), going into the supermarket, touching the buggy, leaving, you grab that buggy, and you now have the virus on her hands. Same with doorknobs, ect. So, you may not think your kids can't be exposed to it, but it happens.

My market now has Clorox wipes at the door to clean down cart handles/seats before use, and I use it every single time. I carried my own prior to the store providing them. You just don't know who's hands have touched the cart, and what those hands have touched before.

It's the same reason I try to not touch handrails on stairwells, or especially at WDW! I'm an admitted germophobe; no shoes in the house, frequent handwashing. I've seen little ones in line at WDW rubbing their mouths on the rails, and I'll say something like, "Ooooo, yucky, no no," and I had one mom glare at me because apparently she thought it was okay. I just think fecal residue from not washing hands is now on that rail, and your child is ingesting it!

Anyway, back to the topic; I fully believe in vaccinations, both my kids are up to date with everything, except the rotavirus. It's just too new. EvanMouse had rotavirus at age 4 and it was miserable, for us but especially for him. He would sit on the toilet and just cry. We wound up needing to put him in pullups for a few days because he just couldn't make it to the bathroom, and was so distressed about that. Even with that experience, my judgement would be to wait. The same reason I'll defer Gardasil (from another thread).

I don't know anything about this, so I don't have any feelings on the subject. That said DD is going for 2 month shots next week and I think I need to look into this stuff more before then. I'm confused as to whether or not rotavirus vaccine is given still.

ETA: I looked at the CDC schedule and it's on the list. I'm confused because the article said it was recalled. Not to hijack the thread, but if anyone can give me more info on this please PM me. I'm very concerned about this.

I'm glad nursing worked for you. But it didn't work for us. Cameron refused, absolutely refused to nurse or take anything by mouth. He wouldn't latch on, nothing. How do you tell 11 month old to nurse? The pedi said to force liquids down him with a syringe. He spit it out. What he didn't spit out, he vomited very shortly. A child (or anyone) will dehydrate if they are not taking any liquids in. Simple as that. We went from onset of roto to hospitalization in less than 36 hours. That is how fast an infant can dehydrate.

Russ did the same with coxsackie (hand foot and mouth disease.) Refused to nurse, refused all food and liquids, even popsicles and Jello. We tried forcing with a syringe, too. He had sores all over his mouth and nursing/drinking HURT and he didn't understand that he would DIE without it. He was 15 months old and was in the hospital for an IV less than 30 hours after he showed symptoms.

The first version of the vaccine was recalled (late 1990s, I think). The newer version is the one being used. If you decide to do it, it's a series of 3 drinks over 6 months.
